I've been doing damage control like that for quite some time. Its amazing how convoluted Halo's storyline can get when people only read the pieces they want to read.

I'm not talking about the people in this thread, btw. I always appreciate it when people ask questions when they're not sure. I just don't like it when people defend false information and can never cite a page number of chapter... and despite glaring evidence to the contrary, they maintain their assertions.

Ah I didn't defend it.... I asked people to check on it because I've only read through all the books once and it was right after there releases, so its been awhile.

KillerB, I wasn't trying to offend. I wasn't talking about anyone specifically, and certainly not you. You offered a straightforward question and were appreciative of a straightforward answer. No hard feelings right?

At least I'm not the only one re-reading the books, or reading them for the first time, so all reference material can be fresh in my mind.

And for the whole time travel thing they mention in the books that it is possible to translate (as in move) along a teporal axis. So in the Haloverse time travel is theoretically possible.

Could the Sleeping Princess be Master Chief's arch-enemy or friend? If you've seen the movie "Unbreakable" you've probably heard of arch-nemesis (nemesi? nemeses? Rolling Eyes ) having very same but very different attributes. Maybe the Princess will be "wide awake and physical" and Bungie will introduce a new female character in the form of Matser Chief's adversary or side-kick.

If this is the case, one could speculate that the Pious flea is Cortana. (Pious means showing loyal reverance for a person or thing). Maybe the Princess is reducing Cortana to mere flea by taking the attention of Master Chief.

I'm not entirely sure what all this stuff means, but I just wanted to speculate on one part and see where this went.

KingChaos: We have yet to see ANYTHING that shows a true relation to Master Chief. As cool as he is, I think we should leave him out of this.

Just thought I'd toss in my thinking on the SP. On the bee facts page we have.
16,000 to 24,000 larvae developing into adults in sealed cells.
much as the sleeping princess develops. Also, some larvae develop into queens, depending on how they are fed I think, royal jelly and all that (great Roald Dahl story about royal jelly by the way). So the princess is the successor to the queen, as princesses tend to be, and that works in both the fable and insect world. The interesting question will be, how will the queen feel about her successors awakening. Also, I'd put bets on info about the Princess being found in the (likely) steged jpg, just a good sealed hiding spot.

I think another link that could come in to play is the idea of The Myth of Comatas where The Operator a.k.a. Queen a.k.a. Melissa (which happens to mean "honeybee" in Greek) is the caretaker for the Sleeping Princess. This would agree with the idea of the Princess becoming the next Queen.[/url]

Technically the definition for princess is 1) a female member of a royal family, 2) the consort of a prince. The successor to a throne would be called the heir-apparent, which may be a prince or princess depending on the rules of accension. Source for the definition came from Webster's Dictionary, and also various other things I have read. Just trying to clear that up.

Well, not to deviate from the wonderful rabbit trail of spartans and forrunners... Wink but I have a bit of speculation to offer myself.

I haven't been trouted yet, if this is deserving of it, lay it on me, but still... I want to "reaveal the truth".

Someone speculated earlier that The Operator was spying on Oni Tech Kawalski and Midshipman Arrelts in her memories that she flashed back to while the SPDR was operating on her... And that they were some kind of enemy humans. Well, I haven't read the halo books YET, but didn't we decide that Kawalski and Arrelts were indeed characters from them?

Basicly what I'm driving at, is I don't think the Operator is their enemy, (to them at least) as was previously speculated... They talked about her, and her favorite game... And she referrs to them as "who I loved"... I think she was an on-board AI for the ship they were on... BUT I think somehow she has turned evil. I'm not sure if AI's have enough freewill to be capable of a concious shift of alleigance like this, but there's also the possibility that she was reprogramed, most likely by SPDR. In the story the Widow sounds a bit deranged and crazy... even downright evil... when she says "...and further let it be known that retribution on any who hinder the return of the Queen will be swift and terrible." Perhaps SPDR reprogramed the Operator to be evil, and that's why it is messing with her memories. Whether SPDR did it or not, we do see that the Operator posseses a considerable ammount of anger towards Kawalski and Arrelts for getting her favorite game wrong, but also she seems to resent her memories now, and says things like "Why the hell should I want to watch my old life...[?]" and "So the old self melts away."

The main question in my mind though, is what The Operator meant by this:

"Young and out of uniform, /// but one of us. Hacker? Traitor? Fifth columnist (no that's ridiculous).

Just in over her head? No. The Spider warning's been deployed. She had every warning that a classified medium was under repair. She just kept /// purging. Too bad for her."

More specifically, what did she mean by "one of us"... Who is "us"? We know the things that separate Dana from them is that she is young, and she isn't in uniform... So whoever it is they must be older and wear uniforms? To me it feels like Melissa isn't talking about the same faction that she was involved in long ago, with Kawalski and Arrelts and Greene and Sorenson... This seems like a different faction, going along with the "change of alleigance" theory of mine.

Also, whoever speculated that the Princess is really Melissa BEFORE she was made AI, I think that's a brilliant deduction. Perhaps the real Melissa, or the Princess, is now in a cryo-chamber somewhere?

And who is the Servant that The Operator referrs to here:

"I find myself checking back on certain things, little memories I locked down tight and swaddled up for future reference. Seems as if all the 3-sense memories are gone - wiped out by the Assassin or the Servant or pure impact damage - but I still have some of the faintcopy /// backups."

The Flea perhaps? And while we're on the subject of the Flea... I think there is some connection between it and the Operator. It seems to me that they are both going by similar protocalls, even if the Operator is a little smarter in her reasoning:

"Seek the truth
Behold the truth
Reveal the truth
That is the law and the whole of the law"

Compare this with:

"Got the drop on you that time, sweetheart.

Opening shot of my search and destroy. I'm going to know everything about you. Where you live and what you buy, how you think and who you love. Know the enemy."

Also, "survive evade reveal escape"... What is it that Melissa is wanting to reveal? Maybe the same thing that Flea wants to reveal? Note, this is later replaced with "resist" in the same sequence, when she tries to escape but fails.

Hmmmm...

Lastly, 2 things...: 1, don't be too easy on Melissa. I saw a lot of you saying things like "she's only trying to kill Dana because she sees her as a threat"... Remember this, there is a reason why Melissa is in Dana's computer. I think she's not there willingly (she talks about being shipwrecked) but I think SOMEONE put her there for a much greater purpose. And also, remember that a weapon is all she is (she said it herself). Someone put her in Dana's computer, and she is a weapon. It could be that a lot more lives are at stake here than just Dana's. 2, I think there is a deep significance to the "HIDE AND SEEK" being her favorite game. What that is, I'm not entirely sure. I have a few ideas... but still...

PS: Know the enemy. Cool

Re: [SPEC][INFO]The Princess, definitive thread

Okay, getting back to the Sleeping Princess... Wink
Remember this part of the Operator's Monologue?
The Operator wrote:
Someday I am going to win free of this Babbage Machine and I will find the designer of the Spider and I will kill him and kill him and kill him and: okay, three times is probably enough. But I AM SOMEWHAT AWAKE now. I should have more discretionary control over what gets initialized. A patient should be able to stop the doctor from
cutting off her foot to make a new nose or

the white coats

their needles and
knives, their kind
and serious voices.
Their heartfelt
belief that it's
all for a good
cause.

[SPDR: PROBE COMPLETE]
[RESUME CONTROL]

elbow or... Jesus.
Where did THAT come from?
Spider stuck a probe into SOMETHING I don't recognize at all.

What about the theory that SPDR stuck a probe into a memory of the Sleeping Princess? That could be why the Operator doesn't recognize it at all -- because it's not her own memory.

Even more wild SPEC (though slightly trout-scented): This sure sounds like a memory from a human, not a computer-generated AI, don't you think? As I understand it, in the Haloverse it is possible to create an AI from a scan of a human's mind. What if the Sleeping Princess is a copy of the original scan? And she is "sealed in a glass coffin" for protection, just in case the Operator completely collapses some day and they need to "wake" the Princess to become the new Queen?

Interesting. I've stuck a header in "Talk:The Operators Monologue" to draw more people's attention to this tidbit, commented on originally by Extrasonic.
