Barely had time to think since yesterday but I've just read T&I and from a quick scan I can't see anyone else having commented on something Dorcus said.

Quote:
"It's one of a pair," said Dorcas, "rather like its owner. Or, I should say, owners."

Where is the other Alice then? In this world or in the mirror?

errr there's my post 2 before yours, but I don't think Alice owns the mirror, she's just been using it. I took it to mean Dr Dee, but I guess the current real owner is Hattie...?!

Sorry AP, just seen your post.

Doesn't Marsh-Ayre refer to Alice being the owner now though?

Quote:
I've also tried to alert Alice Klein, the current owner of the mirror,

Tarot cards

I don't know about the 5th card, but to me the first 4 are definitely

Death: Scorpion imagery, "why, you're nothing but skin and bone" - skeleton, "smells of damp and earth" - like the grave, or a crypt, we don't know who 'kills' the man at the beginning of week 1's story, but she is there at St Pancras, so quite possibly her. Woman card.

Magician: Pick a card, any card... I think it's a typo (probably on purpose) so actually only one card is taken - also he says at the beginning of spinankle's profile that the third card is a quiet one, so he can't have taken two from the magician.

Hermit: just everything - the lantern, the crab, the being on his own. No question in my mind.

World: If you read here I think it makes it clear:
http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/basics/world.shtml
but of course he ends up with the fool.

I don't think the 5th card is mentioned in the 5th week - all the other times he has taken the card from someone who represents it - even in the hermit he found it in a book in his library.

That more or less sums up my feelings.

Edit 1 - Even if he hadn't got the Fool he wouldn't have had enough for the path of passage.

Edit 2 - As for the owners, surely they are Tweedledum and Tweedledee characters. The twin references are clear, and the person masquerading as 'the world' turned out to have a decidedly masculine tone of laugh, and referred to his brother.

Edit 3 - And looking back at what mseckington said, while I clearly don't agree on what cards M-A has, I am strangely drawn to the argument of why there might be a Mirror card.

You have clearly been thinking about this hard, Wukka!
Any thoughts on my theory?
x

EDIT: Bella keeps disappearing and reappearing, could she be one of the Tweedles?

EDIT 2: Scrap my original theory. Dorcas is the High Priestess. She is at once revealing, yet is keeping secrets. She is the only one who can help. although that doesn't completely ruin the theory..

EDIT 3: Is the Mirror actually The Moon Card?
http://www.aeclectic.net/tarot/learn/meanings/moon.shtml

Has Hattie become the Mirror? Is that why MA can't find her? That would make her everywhere, everything.

T&I Update: confirmations and more

I'll leave those deeper in the card game than I to ponder the significance of some of the new information, but two things which stood out rather obviously were:

Quote:
"Hang on a minute," I said. "I know about that mirror. It's on display in the British Museum."
"It's one of a pair," said Dorcas, "rather like its owner. Or, I should say, owners."

[1] Someone should go to the British Museum. Blatant clue, I think.
[2] Tweedledum and dee definitely (re)confirmed.

Don't forget you can view a lot of the British Museum's artefacts online (think chelec mentioned this wayback):

http://www.britishmuseum.org/explore/highlights/highlight_objects/pe_mla/d/dr_dees_mirror.aspx

Interesting stuff about the Aztecs:
Quote:
Tezcatlipoca, the Aztec god of rulers, warriors and sorcerers, whose name can be translated as 'Smoking Mirror'. Aztec priests used mirrrors for divination and conjuring up visions.

It's all done with smoke and the other thing...

British Museum

It would be interesting to visit the BM anyway, maybe to see what is near the mirror? I'd love to go, but can't get to London until the 25th at least - methinks it mught be a bit late by then!

Just wanted to point out a small thing I've noticed. When you click on the Your Stories link on the contrariwise post, it says:

Quote:

Write your stories here, or link to them... - TMH.

Note the initials - TMH not TMA. He seems to be using his alternate name of The March Hare.

How important this is I don't know.

New T&I Post

There's a new T&I post and Dorcus has worked out that MA has 23 points and that we have to see what Dr. Doom (Dr. Dee's brother) is up to.

EDIT:veebee, missed your post while typing!

next one's up too.

..and so we have an answer, The Wheel of Fortune...time for the storytellers amongst us to get busy...

BTW, just to be smug, I think I said it would all be made clear didn't I?

Dr Doom? As in the Dr Doom? Or does he just happen to share his name and appearance with one of the world's great supervillains?

Quote:
From the mouth of the black horse he pulled a card. As he did, he showed his hand for a moment. I remembered it: Devil, World, Moon, Sun and a worthless card, the Five of Cups.

How come Dr Doom has the Five of Cups, when the RULES OF PLAY state that:

Dr. John Dee's Tarot is played with all of the Major Arcana but only the Face cards of the Minor Arcana

Is this possibly another Perplex City in-joke (remember the Five of Cups bar?)

Trying to make sense of the card values (using the original, rather than contrariwise values):
Devil 15, world 21, sun 19, moon 18 (=73)

Does this hand include the card that Doom pulled from the horse's mouth? Is there another card? The Star is worth 17, Do we have to get the Wheel of Fortune (10) to Thomas to stop it falling into Doom's hands rather than letting Thomas complete a path?

Thomas would only have 33 with the Wheel of Fortune which would not give him a very high score -

(Love) Ahav - The Path of Love - 8 points
(Respect) Kavod - The Path of Honour - 26 points
(Force) Koakh - The Path of Power - 34 points

Still looking at this...

Dr. Doom's Cards

Dr. Doom's Cards
Devil-15
World-21
Moon-18
Sun-19
5 of cups-0 (?)

Total of 73 points. But shouldn't he have 6 cards? I thought MA was the one with too few cards. If Dr. Doom has 6 cards, could the 6th one be Chariot-7 since Alice basically describes that card in her description of Dr. Doom? If so, then his point total right now is 80 and he would only need Wheel of Fortune-10 to get the Path of Kingship or Judgement-20 to get the Path of Passage.

MA's possible cards
Fool-0
Mage-1
Hierophant-5
Strength-8
Hermit-9

That gives us 23 points. If we get the Wheel of Fortune-10 our total is 33 points. But if the Fool equals 22, then our total is 55 and we have achieved the Path of Motion.

Not sure if we even need to know our path anymore, since we know that we need the Wheel of Fortune card. Confused

The cards that wukka mentions above also add up to 23 points:

Death (week 1) - 13 points
Mage (week 2) - 1 point
Hermit (week 3) - 9 points
Fool (week 4) - 0 points

The clues all seem to point to these 4 cards, although I too was expecting MA to have 5, not 4 cards. Still, it doesn't really matter now we know which card he needs next!
