Chat problems

Can someone help me? I'm trying to get connected to #beekeepers, but it's giving me this:

[10:52] *** Closing Link 0.0.0.0 (Cloning is not permitted on this network. Max 3 connections per host)

[10:52] *** Disconnected from IRC

Any idea what's going on? I don't know much about IRC.

I don't have any connections, as far as I'm aware. I suspect that maybe I never disconnected previously the previous few times, or something to that effect. So if anyone sees me logged in to one of the chats, could you let me know here? (My login is usually MaclimesZ or MaclimesZero). Thanks.

What software or link are you using to connect?

I'm afraid I'm not great at that kind of thing, so I'll tell you what I do know:

I'm using Internet Explorer 6.0, and I'm getting there by clicking on the link on the ilovebees wiki, which points me here: http://www.marthasboardinghouse.com/cgi-bin/irc.cgi

I then type in my username, select #beekeepers, and bam. That "error". It had been working fine for the past few weeks. No idea what's going on.

chat-solutions.org allows internet sites like martha's to connect, however they have a silly "3 connection limit" per domain. So if there are 3 people using Martha's interface, everyone else that tries to connect gets that error "max 3 connections per host".

I don't believe that the unfiction irc client has that problem. Although you do have to say that jpilot is "allowed" to install it's applet.

I use both interchangably when I'm IRC'ing from home.

Dang it... from there, I get a different problem. It attempts to connect, and then says:

Unable to connect to server
Connection Closed

Then it tries a few others, but they all return the same message.

The Java applet (at Unfiction) connects directly to the IRC server. Since the program runs in the browser on your own machine (instead of on the server), a virtually unlimited number of people can use this simultaneously. The only drawback is that if you are behind a secure firewall (for instance, at an office, dorm, or computer lab with a restrictive network policy), it will be unable to connect to the IRC server.

The web browser version (at Martha's Boarding House) bounces your connection through the web server. Because of the IRC connection limit over at chat-solutions, only three people can connect at a time because it does a simple count of connections per source IP address. Also, each connection adds a chunk of server load and sizable amount of memory usage because the app is running on the web server instead of in your browser. Bouncing the connection through the web server means it bypasses strict firewalls.

So, here is a note for everyone: if you can successfully connect with the Java applet, then that would be the thing to use--so you are not "tying up the connection" for those that need to use the web client. If you are using the web client and get the above error, just try again in 5 or 10 minutes. Eventually someone will leave willingly or will idle too long and get dropped.

So Space, wanna try and convince Jick or Benjamin to let the CGI IRC server have many connections? Smile

Done and done! Benjamin has graciously upped the max connections from Martha's to 100. But martha's server may not be able to actually RUN 100. Quick, let's test it while Martha's out of town on vacation! Very Happy
