Complete shot in the dark, I know, but have we tried to find anything out about Dana's parents? A common theme in some of Sylvia's poetry is stuff about her dad (sometimes indirectly, sometimes metaphorically). Her dad was, in fact, an expert on bees even writing a book about them. Something else that makes me believe we should try to contact her parents is how she explicitly mentions her mom in her most recent phone message. Possible that we should pursue this?

Well, it's me, the interested guest, I went ahead and joined. Thanks for the invitation! Very Happy

Let's cut to the chase. First off, I think the "possible" clues from this could come in three ways. 1) The obvious, which is the poems' titles, bodies, text, subjects, and themes. 2) The possible/likely hint at the importance of August 24th. 3) If there is Sylvia Plath Poetry on the hard-drive, what else might be there? Other authors, music, programs, etc...? What importance might this other data hold?

Second, I wanted to put out a quote from "Stings" containing things we have seen, and things we may see in the future.

Quote:
It is almost over.
I am in control.
Here is my honey-machine,
It will work without thinking,
Opening, in spring, like an industrious virgin

-and-

Quote:
They thought death was worth it, but I
Have a self to recover, a queen.
Is she dead, is she sleeping?
Where has she been,
With her lion-red body, her wings of glass?

Now she is flying
More terrible than she ever was, red
Scar in the sky, red comet
Over the engine that killed her--
The mausoleum, the wax house.

Finally, following is some completely wild speculation about associations between poem titles and characters/occurrences:

o Admonitions - Dana's Blog
o Aftermath - What is to come
o All the Dead Dears - AI remebering and qouting the crew
o Amnesiac - The AI in phase I
o An Appearance - Either the appearance of the AI, or an appearance yet to be realized
o Apprehensions - Dana on whether to stay or go, whether to attempt fixing the site or not
o The Arrival of the Bee Box - The AI's first awakening in the computer
o Battle-Scene - Troy or something in the future?
o The Beast - Yet to be realized, but I believe it to be the queen
o The Beekeeper's Daughter - Dana
o The Bee Meeting - Dana's encounter with the AI
o The Couriers - Possibly the e-mails or "Us"?
o Departure - Dana's leaving to China, or the AI's escape from the computer
o The Detective - Dana and "Us"
o Dialogue En Route - Future e-mails or bloq posts from Dana
o Doom of Exiles - Something that would be revealed in the future
o Doomsday - What the awakening of the Queen and the release of the Swam will bring
o The Dream - Last line, "I do not tell you the nightmare/which occurred to me in China.'"
o Eavesdropper - The AI hacking into Dana's blog
o Event - ??
o The Fearful - Dana and the AI
o Getting There - Either Dana's trip to China, or the AI getting out of the computer
o Gulliver - In story/game clue
o Incommunicado - Dana in China (after discovering she's being watched/listened to?)
o Insomniac - The AI (or us Very Happy)
o The Jailer - The Spider or Dana?
o Last Words - ??
o A Life - Margaret's "About me" page
o Love Letter - The latest (08/03/04) letter from LadyBee777
o Metaphors - Where do I start?
o On Deck - ??
o The Other - Dana, the Spider, the Widow (if they aren't the same), the Pious Flea?
o The Other Two - Possibly any combination of two characters that are commonly referred to together.
o Paralytic - What the AI was going through?
o The Princess and the Goblins - ??
o Prospect - Us, as a way to get to Dana?
o Pursuit - The AI's hunt for Dana
o The Queen's Complaint -
o The Rival - ??
o A Secret - See the 08/03/04 e-mail from LadyBee777
o The Sleepers - Something yet to be released
o Spider - Self explanatory
o Stings - referred to on the site, plus (see above)
o The Swarm - What the Queen will release
o Terminal - The "Box"??
o Three Women - Dana, Margaret, and Chloe
o Who - ??
o Widow - Self explanatory
o Words heard, by accident, over the phone - The Chinese phrase on Dana's latest voice-mail

I may be completely and totally wrong on all accounts, but I believe there are just too many things going on here to let it be ignored, until it is proved to be coincidence.

I hope this provides some help, and I hope I can help in other areas. I have to admit, it was the ILB article on IGN that got me here, but I've heard of these games, and have always been interested, I just didn't know where to start. Thanks again!

I think The Birthday Paradox starts coming into play here somehow.

No, because we've got one of the dates fixed.

The birthday paradox "works" because you don't have a fixed date you're looking for; rather, you're looking for any date which is shared between two people in the set. Plus, you're only look for a situation where the odds of two people sharing a birthday are better than evens - to be [i[certain[/i] that two of them share a birthday, you do need 367 people.

In our situation, the probability of a given event falling on 24th August is still 1/365-and-a-bit.[/i]

Absolutely, except while the date is fixed, the event isn't. It's not like we're going out there and saying, "If only there was some significant suicide attempt on August 24th" - we're just looking for anything significant that happened then. Given the number of potentially significant things in Plaths life - her birth, her death, her first published work, her last published work, her father's death, the publication dates of any of her significant pieces, her engagement / marriage to Ted Hughes, her daughter's birthday (and these are all off the top of my head, I'm sure someone who actually cares about her can name many, many more) - those odds go down significantly.

In other words, I'm pretty sure this is a coincidence, and not even a particularly spectacular one.

I suppose the Operator's plight might seem superficially similar to waking up in the hospital after a failed suicide attempt. Maybe if we learn that the crash landing was deliberate, the August 24th connection will be worth pursuing, but for the moment it seems coincidental.

Perhaps the crash was deliberate, but SPDR working on the Queen has been speculated to be a failed attempt to implement the Cole Protocol in Halo background... in effect, the aftermath of a failed suicide attempt.

That's what caught my attention about the Plath suicide date.

-- Steve now really does have to dig in to this... for instance, when did she finally succeed?
