I have an RPG background myself (D&D, V:TM, Werewolf, M&M, couple others). I think the reason why I bring up the issue of blending RPGs and ARGs is because I have had so much fun with RPGs, and I feel like I want to bring that same enjoyment into ARGs. However, the more and more I play ARGs, and after reading a couple similar threads with this concept of merging the two genres, I'm beginning to think that bringing RPGs and ARGs together would do more harm than good. I've come to think of it like taking two things you love, say chocolate and cheese, and trying to mix them into something new (I pray no one's ever tried to mix cheese and chocolate; that would taste horrible!). It doesn't work. Chocolate is best when it's chocolate. Sometimes you have to leave behind the things you love in order to love something new.

But you can't deny there's some kind of one-sided roleplaying goin on in almost every ARG out there. Whenever someone interacts with a character, the character is roleplaying, and the player is... almost roleplaying. I mean, when you first see a puzzle you just try to solve it any way you can. But when it's too hard, many players will try to send a message to a character, asking for help. Of course, the event of a character giving out clues could be decided from the beginning or not, and as the game progresses (and depending of the interactivity of the ARG), I guess some players will begin adjusting the personality they show in their mails and communications, sort of "roleplaying themselves", but that would be a side effect of game inmersion...

PD: and yes, there are chocolate cheesecakes, and they taste not like cheese nor chocolate, but something else... is that what you're looking for?

ot: there's also that nasty "quickie" fudge you can make with processed cheese spread... so... you see...(back on topic) anything's possible... may not be palatable to most but is possible.

There are lots of ARG's where the players role play. I am playing WITG right now and we were forced to split into two teams. One teams supports this guy kidnapping and murdering Hollywood icons, one team decries it. I chose to support, cause sometimes being evil is more fun. As a result, my "character" within this game has even made a video showing my support. Obviously, I don't really condone kidnapping and murder, but within this particular game, I do.

Puzzle Experiment #2 is up.

Thanks everyone for your help on this first experiment. I hope the second experiment is slightly more challenging and enjoyable. Smile

For anyone still wondering, the difficult solve for Puzzle Experiment #1 required players to notice that the image was stegged in addition to having hidden numbers in the backdrop. The password for the hidden data is 5319. The hidden portion of the image contains a gif file with another number code: 8260. Using the same indexing logic that Nighthawk explains, the final passcode would be: 6208.

The additional layer was put in place as another point of study, to see how many players, if any, would check that far into the image. Unfortunately, the puzzle had some obvious problems, so that point of interest was never reached.

Anyway, thanks again, everyone. Your feedback has been well-received. Very Happy

I've often said that stegging is a great way to hide information.
I've also often said that if it happens in a game, I won't ever see the solution as "Homey don't play dat". There are an impossibly huge number of tools out there for stegging and unless a game hints at which was used, trying to happen on the correct one is an exercise in futility.
