 PuzzleCrunch
One-Day, Online Puzzle Hunt by University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign this Saturday

For those not familiar with Puzzlecrack, it's like the annual MIT Mystery Hunt, Manbites Dog and Microsoft's Puzzle Hunt. I think I was the only one from unfiction that did it last October, but it was a LOT of fun. I couldn't finish the game as it required your physical presence at UIUC on the last series, but I made it to the last day in pretty fair shape, for someone not at the campus (Thanks to generous help from "The Big Enchilada", who ran the game.). I'll definitely be back for the next one!

Well, apparently, their engineering department sponsors another of these hunts, but it only runs for a single day and is completely online. The puzzles from the October event were VERY well-done, so I thought I'd share their invite with the community. I would be available only sporadically, throughout the day, but doing this as a team would be a good time, I'm sure.

Anybody wanna do it?

Here's their email:

Hello Puzzlers!

It's short notice, but we wanted to inform everybody who participated in the last PuzzleCrack that we will be holding PuzzleCrunch this Saturday, April 26. Unlike PuzzleCrack, this event will be a one day, all-online competition. Anyone is free to participate and win prizes, so please forward this to whoever else might be interested! The more, the better.

Like our last event, PuzzleCrunch is sponsored by Amazon.com and Microsoft. Prizes include copies of Halo 3, Microsoft hardware, hats, shirts, and a Kindle! Good luck!

- The PuzzleCrack Crew

P.S. We're still working on getting the website up, but the competition is expected to be run from puzzlecrunch.com. Feel free to email back with questions or comments.

I did reply to the email ( rp2007SPLATpuzzlecrack.org ) asking specifically whether it was an individual event or if teams were allowed and got an email failure.

The time difference might not work in my favour, but I will try and get as involved as possible

Sure. We can just open a new room on Saturday.
Guess we'll be needing a team name, too.
Any suggestions? Or just the generic "Team unfiction"?

Count me in, considering I'm from Illinois and it would be cool just to participate in something from around this neck of the woods. Team Unfiction sounds good to me. Also, is the IRC channel kept secret as to keep non-team-members (i.e. non-UFers) away or is someone gonna post it here? Since it is a competition and all.

Given how fast the bots catalog new pages on unfiction and make them available to searches, I'd say we should limit our posting (even if spoilered) of any parts of the questions and answers to the forums and not put the room name out there.
Like I said, I'll be of limited use on this one due to my poor connection. The puzzles in PuzzleCrack were all fairly low-bandwith types, but even a large image file takes some time to load, here. I'll let somebody else handle the IRC part as if I try to set up any kind of hidden/secure room, it'll be epic fail.

Puzzles typically entail elements of:

Set-up (A clue page)
Presentation/additional data collection (via images, mostly)
Ordering
Data extraction/decryption
Research (not always)
Reporting the answer or getting a hint via email

If too many are struggling with something, they usually update the puzzle with new clues or clarifications.

And we need to keep track of the puzzles/solves for use in the meta-puzzle.

Chat

Okay, still a little confused on what people want to do as far as chat, but for now, I'm in an IRC room on chat-solutions called #unficcrunch (if you want to join, you can either access it through your favorite IRC client, or through the unfiction chat applet where it says "channel".

Only 10 min left! Exciting.

Today's Puzzle
Hello, Puzzlers...

With great regret, we've again had to cancel the scheduled puzzles. It seems disaster always knows exactly when to strike and disrupt our puzzling plans. First there was Calvin's kidnapping, then his murder, and most recently his android brother's arrival. This time, our poor uncle Joseph Palasky was taken from us.

In retrospect, we probably shouldn't have joked with him so much. After all, it was clear he was going senile. (But, honestly, would you really expect him to try eating all his money?) Even if we did did convince him that leprachauns were trying to steal it all... Not even Kobayashi could eat all $42 million. Poor Uncle Blue...

Luckily, our uncle was a generous and caring man. Even in the heights of his senility, old Blue always remembered that we loved puzzles. As a final parting gift, he left us an "E-will" in the form of twelve puzzles. We've been racking our brains over this for a few days now to no avail. Puzzlers, will you help us?

Please remember, contacting us before, during, and after the competition is highly encouraged. Keep us updated on your progress, and keep checking this space for hints throughout the day!

CISRA

I'm a sucker for these kinds of challenges. Unfortunately I am otherwised booked for today. When I get home tonight, I hope I can jump in and see how it all went down.

In the same vein, is anyone going to work on this CISRA Puzzle Competition? I've cracked only two of the 4 warm-up puzzles, and the main event begins Monday (when I'm at work). I've teamed up with Sin_Vraal in the past, but he's busy too. (Appologies for blatent advertising and potential threadjack, so just ping me out-of-thread if you want to join me, or we'll start a new thread for discussion.)

Whee! That was fun. We believe we have the right answer, but as the creators are taking a break, we won't know for a while. Thanks to everyone who stopped in and helped. Every little bit helped Very Happy
