That makes sense - are you saying one name isn't truer than another, it just depends on your perspective? So Hattie's true name is Hattie in our world but the Mad Hatter in the mirror world etc.

Yes, I think so. But then following this through, wouldn't Marsh-Ayre have to find the true names from his own point of view?

CCS wrote:
So the real riddle is what is meant by "true names". Right?

Agreed.

An alternative possibility with the whole Alice dual identity thing.

Perhaps within the looking glass world, Thomas' true name is The March Hare. If that was right then Tweedle Dum and Tweedle Dee would be the true names of John Dee and his "brother", whoever he is in "RL". EDIT Of course he isn't anyone in RL because he is fictional (my mistake).

You can spin this out several ways I think Confused

I totally agree and honestly didn't think it was a point for debate anymore - Tweedledum and Tweedledee have never been mentioned at any point, just those clever types of you on this forum worked that one out pretty early on, only confirmed by the naming of Dr Doom.

The question remaining is what we do with that information...

Bearing in mind that the "mirror world" is supposed to be the world of all stories (including but not limited to the "looking glass" world of AIW), I think we have to consider Cabbage's suggestion from way back, that Dr. Doom is simply Dr. Victor von Doom from the Marvel universe.

Actually, it makes a pretty good story to imagine Dr. John Dee (scientist and occultist) on "our side" of the mirror trying to break through, and Dr. Doom (scientist and occultist) in the "story world" trying the same thing.

I'm wondering if what is written in our world actually transpires in the "story world" -- or does it work the other way? If the former, can't we just write the ending that we want, until we hear back from TMH that it happened?

I am intrigued by the caterpillar saying this:

Quote:
"because we in the mirror do not like those brothers, do not like the way they have ridden rough-shod over us"

I don't recall anyone in the books particularly disliking them....?

EDIT: Hang on, just remembered summat; any pawn can become a queen..

The story world isn't created by the writing of stories in this world, rather the stories people write in this world are plucked from the story world, hence when you stare into the mirror you become more creative, you don't just write out Moby Dick again...
Spoiler (Rollover to View):

or at least thats the impression I got from "Follow the instructions and all the stories in the world will be yours. And if you know the stories, why, you know the dreams of humanity." in MAs profile in spinankle, and "The mirror gave us the most marvellous inspiration for stories, paintings, music. But more than that, it gave us access to a mystical world which I hypothesise is the collective unconscious of mankind; the place where all inspiration is born." from contrariwise.

So I don't think we can just write a story where MA wins and he'll win, I think the only way we can affect the mirror world is by communicating with those in it, so by writing MA stories to try and guide his actions.

I like the way the caterpillar says:

Quote:
We are playing neither chess nor cards. We are telling a story. A story that is a game, a game that is a story.

OOG: That is precisely what we are doing, in playing this ARG Wink

[silly]I like the way the caterpillar says:

Quote:
The creature put its head to one side, stretching and squelching its body as it did so.

OOG: That is precisely what I am doing as I am playing this ARG Shocked [/silly]

Sooooo...

....where now? What should we be doing? I get a feeling M-A already knows who the "Tweedles" are:

Quote:
I have a shrewd idea who my enemy is – or rather my enemies – and the fact that one of 'em's supposed to have been dead for 400 years and the other's supposed to be fictional just makes them more dangerous in my book. So to speak.

So telling him that doesn't seem to be the point. Isn't this ending soon? I keep feeling that we've missed something (and when i say"we" I probably will end up meaning "I" Smile )

BTW AFriend, (and this is a personal view) I don't think it's right to throw in red herrings - they've now got a link back to us, making us look like the bad guys (not to mention putting possible ARG converts off for life... Wink )

Re: The sixth story
Where's the ending?

AndyAndyO wrote:
'Scuse the slight ramblings here but it is quite early.
I was slightly disappointed with the final story, especially since I read somewhere that this was the one story the designers were most pleased with. It seemed to be a story without a satisfactory ending.

I think I was probably wrong to assume there was any more of the labyrinth than has already been discovered. You can read Adrian Hon's description of creating The (Former) General here ....
http://mssv.net/2008/04/22/creating-the-former-general/
... though he does say ...
Quote:
Back when we were planning the six week schedule for the stories, we decided to structure it like an album - start with a bang, and end with a bang.

In which case I, for one, am still waiting for the final bang! Perhaps the satisfactory conclusion of the seventh story may give us that.

[OOG]Thanks for the link AndyAndyO - having read what Adrian had to say, I can't say I share his enthusiasm over it. I didn't find it as amazingly innovative as he describes it to be and I felt that there was a lot of poential there which was wasted.
I didn't like the 'still life' approach of there not being a real story there and certainly no ending, much like last week's one as well.
So I feel they started with a bang and have deflated at the end... I hope the end of the arg is good though as I have really enjoyed playing it and it tying in to the stories so sneakily Smile [/OOG]

EDIT: Also disappointing was that tantalising teaser of a post on Slice's blog which was then removed - how much more of her story was written and we haven't been allowed to see?

I have got so used to referring to Slice as Slice, and now what you have said has just made me remember her full nickname: SLICEQUEEN...

IngyW wrote:
Alice (and Dorcus) could be the help from the outside, which implies that the Queen is already in the mirror. This is probably Hattie, unless Alice (my first thought as Queen, purely because of reading The White Knight so much!) is now in the mirror - we still haven't heard from her have we? Is she in a coma too?

Alternatively, is Slicequeen, a character from one of the most ARG-like episodes of the six stories, about to appear in the seventh story? There is definitely a loose end there, though of course some writers like to leave things hanging in the air...

[OOG] Not sure how happy Toby Litt would be for the character to be subsumed into an ARG with a different author, though, unless of course he is involved in the writing of the endgame... [/OOG]

PS Sorry for my previous post. It was silly and it won't happen again.

EDIT removed treacle and ink references to the next message for clarity

So can we assume that Alice is somehow going to pass Temperance to The Mad Hatter?

EDIT: So based on the note:
Quote:
"love is better than power, and synergy than kingship".
surely this relates to the paths? In which case is it telling us that the hand The Mad Hatter should go for is really the path of Love as it's the least points? i.e. making it clear what the previous clue was about everything being reversed.

It sounds that way.

So in the end, "Love conquers all"...
