Here's my $.03 (stupid inflation):

After the chopper crash, HUD and Beth pull Rob from the wreckage. While they're getting him patched up, you see fighter jets above screaming away from the park (and incidentally the direction MGP comes in from). They're on the way out of there before Hammerdown commences, hence the abrupt end of bombing or other military action. As the survivors limp away, HUD goes back for the camera. Unfortunately, MGP strides up at that particular time. Remember, this critter is HUGE so he only has to take a couple of steps to cover a block or so. If you listen, you can hear him coming amongst the residual explosions in the city.

Much is made of MGP's size at this point, so let me stop and say frame of reference. We have no buildings or anything to show just how far up he is, so he may look smaller. Stare up at a 20 story building some time and pretend you don't know it's 20 stories. Where would the top appear to be? Frame it without anything around it if you can.

Anyway, poor HUD gets frozen in fear and gets munched. Based on what we seen in the toy, it's easy to guess that most of the damage done to him is blunt force trauma by the tongue or jaws. Otherwise, he get impaled on a tooth and MGP would need to floss to get him out The camera, being small and made of some indestructible material , falls out of MGP's mouth along with what's left of HUD. MGP then heads off to parts unknown.

Now, what Rob and Beth are doing during MGP's lunch break is a mystery, but my guess is they found a hiding place good enough that MGP didn't bother going after them before he got distracted. Anyway, after the monster leaves, Rob runs over to HUD. Maybe he didn't see how bad the attack was, or maybe it was just traumatic shock, but he still heads over there. Once he sees that HUD is toast, he makes a snap decision to recover the camera. After all they went through, losing the camera at this point would mean HUD died in vain. Rob and Beth then haul to the nearest shelter and we know the rest.

There's really nothing in this scene that screams inconsistency aside from the adamantium camera and our heroes' ability to recover from injury at an almost unreal rate. If Rob and Beth survived, their children would be like Claire and Adam from Heroes

Just finished watching the much clearer version on the DVD frame by frame and yeah Considering Clover walks off with Huds legs danggling from his mouth at the same time as you see Huds face in free fall is VERY disturbing and Very Bloody. His My space update for his height is spot on

On TJ's video Diary, there's a scene at the very end where TJ is holding up his half eaten stunt double. I wonder if he got to keep it?

I was in denial for a long time about Hud being dead but when you slow-mo that scene frame by frame, there is no doubt that man was chewed to bits. I never noticed the loud snapping noise right before Hud falls to the ground until I watched it at home. CHOMP!

Wasn't the gruesome, was pretty perfect in my opinion. If a big giant monster "ate" you, you'd probably be split in half as well Being eaten by MGP is badass, not disturbing for me because, well, wouldn't want to explode, wouldn't want to die in a bombing of bombs and rocks, getting smashed by a tail maybe, but mmm to let MGP taste ma body (lol) That's a death i'd go with

I just posted in another thread about that gruesome snapping sound of Hud going in half, and when you hear that in your own quiet living room with nicely set up surround sound, it's really distressing. I don't wince at many films, but there are several times I do in this one. Hud's death is absolutely one of them.

Off to stuff the DVD in my Mac mini, maybe some closeups of the munchy bits. (Putting up a partial frame is hardly cause for shouting piracy - but I'm pretty ashamed of some of my peers here that chose to download torrents before the official DVD release. Even though some bought it, you have to remember that the more people that participate in a torrent, the more people being able to get the pirated items is facilitated. Of course if you just leech the torrent, you can be universally disliked.)

Definitely Hud's death scene was one of the more effective parts of the movie. But after watching this thing of TJ Miller's: http://www.blerds.com/blerds/wordpress/2007/11/29/dick-joke/ I can't help but imagine Rob drawing on his face before he grabs the camera.

I anticipated it being the same as the theater version.....

I was WAY wrong. I stared for a good ten minutes at HUDS legs that where in
MGP's mouth. I also made sure by zooming in x4 and going frame by frame.

He just.....it.....god damn....

BOTH his legs where ripped separately from his torso and the remainder of him went down to the ground. All I could see was a leg in Clovers mouth.

I know what the sequel is gonna be. Military finds Hud and even they know somehow that he was a pretty cool guy before clover ate him, so they rebuild him better, stronger, and faster. CLOVERFIELD 2: MONSTER VS. ROBO HUD. (This time there will be flaming hobos.)
