Do you think Cloverfield has the best special effects ever? Hmm?

The monster looks out of place in some scenes, but the destruction of New York looked really realistic.

Probably because Tippett Studio had to add the monster into Double Negative's scenes.

Indeed. But the special effects were still top-notch.

They were impressive, Transformers had great special effects aswell, but Cloverfield had the special effects i like. Destruction! Buildings on top of one another. The sound effects were badass aswell, ,like as soon as they leave Beth's place when the 3 rockets fly over their heads, loved that on surround sound turned up loud, and the monsters screams ofcourse
Can't wait to see what Clover2 will bring us next

When you watch the DVD Special Features you really find out the staggering amount of effects that were used not just on the monster and the usual explosions and such, but just to add in views of a city that actually exists. The fact that they created something real via artificial means, while we usually think of effects being used to create things we think of as totally unreal is an amazing paradox to me. Most films with a budget 3 times the amount would've just filmed NYC itself with massive set work and just CGI for what they couldn't destroy or physically mock up. The fact that I didn't suspect that so much of the landscape was CGI and at the same time that what I knew were effects looked pretty convincing says a lot to me. I didn't vote that the effects were best ever, because there weren't really a lot of new novel effects used or created for the film - but the use of existing effects techniques was more novel.

Could that just be the fact that there's a freaking 350 foot ashen white creature roaming the city, breaking everything, and eating people? New York City has a lot of things going on, but I just don't think you see that every day.

Given their budget, I think the effects were phenomonal. I still don't have the DVD yet* so I'm just going by hazy recollections from January, but... Yeah. Effects were awesome. Not just the city. I mean, Clover had skin texture, barnacles falling off, there were webs of veins in it's head-sac things. Alot of detail and love went into this movie. ;P
* (I don't live anywhere near to an Suncoast/FYE, and I really want the Steelbook. I'll be happy to trade if someone gets me the Steelbook I'll get them the target or Best Buy editions, or I'll just pay you back in cash. And cookies! =D)

Are we forgetting king kong? Or jaws(for its time)? Granted Cloverfield has amazing special effects, there are a handful of movies that top it. Spiderman is up there too.
There is one movie that is slipping my mind and its killing me
, but yeah king kong has the greatest special effects ever
EDIT: Thank you Lambo_Diablo_Svtt transformers did it better.

The special effects are very, very good, but what makes them look THAT good is because of the Handheld camera bumping around, They look more "In place". Instead just a still shot with a monster moving around, or a still shot of a destroyed building.
Believe me, I'm a video editor, and my favorite technique is "Motion Tracking", which is basically adding something to a shaky video that wasn't there when you were filming. It makes it look more, "Real", or "in place"

Best Special Effects ever? No.
REALLY damn good effects for a $25m budget? Hell yeah.
I would say Cloverfield is less of Best effects ever (Transformers takes the cake* for this)... and more of best effects for the amount of time + money spent.
*And no... this cake isn't a lie.

The effects in this movie were fantastic, but I'm still scratching my head over why we haven't topped Jurassic Park yet. Those are still the best creature effects I've ever seen. Everyone agree? So it's 15 years later, HOW HAVE WE NOT TOPPED THAT YET?

Ya, king kong was amazing, but to me nothing has looked as real as Jurassic Park. That's one of the only movies where I felt the creatures were actually there with the actors.
Others come really close too, the first 2 Alien movies, of course King King, all 3 Lord of the Rings, etc, all the usuals. But nothing has touched JP yet in my opinion.
