As any self-respecting Halo fan can tell you, and no, there aren't actually THAT many that fit that description, those two characters mean "Monkey King," and MAY refer to a Chinese myth involving that character. They are an actual part of the rifle model for Halo 2, and probably not an ilb hint.

Please don't be rude. It's hard to tell that "trout" is a term of respect when you use it to score points off each other. This is supposed to be fun, you know?

I agree with what you're saying, but I don't think anyone here was being rude, except for perhaps the original poster when he/she said "Not sure if this has been brought up but i just noticed it". Everyone notices things all the time, but the reason everyone doesn't bring everything they notice up (and hence the reason the forum can function as signal, rather than noise) is because of the Search button.

Yeah, but it was an honest mistake. Just ask nicely.
Also, in reference to what sep7imus said: I'm a self-respecting Halo fan, and I didn't know that about the Chinese characters. It is actually quite neat and I'm glad you shared it with us, I just wish you would say it with out the ARG smack-talk.

No offense intended, I assure you.
Plus, that wasn't ARG smack-talk, i'm not even capable of that. If anything, it was halo.bungie.org smack-talk (the "monkey-king" translation was discussed to death there around when the first teaser-trailer for Halo2 came out; if you could figure out WHY it says that, that would be something - no-one really knows to what it refers, though there are lots of theories). But, like I said, it wasn't supposed to be that, either.

[SPEC] Although... The Journey To The West, which was the story of the Monkey King, might have some parallels to our current predicament... I doubt it would lead us anywhere, though.

I think the anime Saiyuki is based on it too.

well, I would think it wouldn't be completely useless to pursue it, since the Sanzou Genjou myth is kinda related to the ilb blog (Dana being Sanzou Genjou, SPDR possibly being Gyumaoh, and us the players being Son Goku, Gojou Sa and Hakkai Cho), and parts of the blog do involve china, the countdown is in chinese time, yadda yadda yadda. So what would be the harm in pursuing something like this?
Edit: Damn, nm. My theory just went out the window, the symbols are japanese, not chinese.

I don't think this has to do with ILB, I think it has more to do with bungie putting things on their guns.
In Halo 1, the chinese symbol for 'Power' is on the butt of the pistol. Anybody who has played halo multiplayer knows this is often true. It also has a chinese 7 on the top of the pistol.
I seriously doubt any of this has a very deep meaning. Bungie also put a hippo on the shotgun shells.

er... i just think bungie is obsessed with chinese characters, it makes stuff look cool, at least in their opinion. maybe they think it makes them ch1n3z3 1337 or something, -_-;; oh well, they seem china crazy.

The main designer is of Chinese extraction, and he likes to sneak some self-referential characters in (see the "Power" character on the Halo 1 pistol).
