[META] In-game/Out-of-Game Connections

Today I woke up, checked out the wiki, and noticed two phone numbers listed. Why? Because they shared the same last name's as the characters in the game. DO NOT CALL PEOPLE BASED ON THIS. If we were meant to have the characters home phone numbers, they would provide a link in-game. The last thing we want is to have innocent people being harassed and asked weird questions only because they share a last name with an in-game character. It is unfair, and irresponsible.

I know everyone is excited and wants to move the game along, but please make sure there is an verifyable in game reason to take action. This includes contacting people, attempting to hack/guess/change passwords/computers/websites, or otherwise do things that may not be intended.

Anything, and everything we are supposed to do in this, WILL be hinted at by the PM's in an in-game matter. Please think before attempting to grasp at straws and potentially end up harassing some little old lady thats might have a heart attack when she sees 1,000 messages on her answering machine.

Thanks.

Well, there's a fine line between investigation and harrassment...

Usually, harrassment constitutes persistant unwelcome calling/contacting, and it can be countered by legal action.

However, one person calling a phone number to ask a question for a game, that doesn't seem too distasteful to me...

What I think should happen, if these phone numbers ARE contacted, is we should first hide the numbers from the mass of people playing this game, and then elect ONE PERSON who's a good speaker, polite, and can concisely ask the person on the other end the appropriate questions, telling them only what they need to know, and definitely not enough to freak them out... Maybe something like "I'm trying to get in touch with Dana Awbrey, are you by any chance related to her?" As long as only one person calls, once, and it's not in the middle of dinner, I don't see what's so wrong with it. A "Please" and "Thank you" go a long way, and I doubt a 30 second phone call is really going to disturb an out-of-game person that much.

However, whether this forum has enough willpower to allow for only one person to call... that's an entirely different question.

Just my opinion. I'm not calling, I don't have the money for long distance bills.

let's think about this

Not really. It isn't that hard to determine what is in-game and what isn't. I understand the interest in hunting down all leads, but the PMs in the game will give clear signals about what is in-game and what isn't. For example, Dana's voicemail number was obviously in-game. Should we have looked up everyone with similar names to try to reach them? Why? We already have her number.

We need need to be able to follow the directions that are clearly set in front of us. No one's privacy should be invaded just because they have similar names or live in the same cities as characters. We really need to be clear about this-- calling out-of-game people or posting their phone numbers on the forums or the wiki is not a smart move for any of us.

Here's some spec: did anyone consider that our interaction with Dana changed dramatically ( I mean before she left for China) because players would not accept her very clear and very direct requests to not hack her email, her blog or her voicemail? Maybe we will never know the answer, but the PMs have ways to protect the characters and to "slap" players who will not cooperate.

Even if no one suffers any real world consequences, you can be sure that the PMs will take action if players continually step out of line. One reason: who has legal responsibility here? If you think PMs aren't concerned about the consequences they may suffer as a result of player's poor judgment, you need to use the "search" function and check out some of the discussions right here on this forum.

Thanks rose, I couldn't put it any more eloquently myself.

Real people getting caught up in In-Game situations just isn't fair. Check out the kids blog that was linked in the funstuff.html hyperlink puzzle. He was very unhappy about all the e-mails he was getting about in-game stuff and deleted the post that was linked to try to protect himself from it. I think the PM's though the blog was dead, but over-active hunters trying not to miss any "loose-ends" found his e-mail address and started e-mailing him. It wasn't fair to him to recieve the e-mails, and feel forced to delete his own material, whether or not you think its innocent or fair detective work.

Its a very slippery slope, and some people go a little bit crazy with these games. Phone numbers are just the start. I wouldn't be surprised if someone volunteered to go over to these peoples houses to "be a good detective". Its going entirely too far, and has a chance to really ruin the game for everyone. Don't do it.

Rule to live by:
If its meant to be in game, the PM will let you know its in game. If the PM's hint at it in-game, its fair game.

For every 1 person who thinks this, the out-of-game innocent victim receives 100 phone calls. Posting a phone number in the wiki also means web spiders find it, handing it out to telemarketers too.

I know it is tempting to want a deeply immersive game to involve real world contact, but logically they are not going to recruit someone who has been in the white pages for years, just to use their last name.

A little "do unto others" can be thought of here too -- would /you/ really want ten million people calling you up because they think you might be related to the game they're playing?

Yes, it is a game. And yes, so far it's mainly been played out over the Internet. But remember that there are real people behind the screen or the phone.
