[OFF TOPIC] Lost Ring for a Good Cause

I lost track of the PR thread but just got this forwarded from a classmate. While some of the content is probably "internal", I did want to pass it on to my fellow Ringers and see if anyone has suggestions! If you have some ideas, please feel free to PM me or post here and I will pass it on to my friend.

...working on this campaign called the Lost Ring that ties in with the summer Olympics. We're trying to tie in some charities that can benefit from the campaign and I thought you might be able to recommend some?
Below is the email that went out internally...

The idea is to find 6 smaller charities which will fulfill the
following qualifications

1) be exciting/relevant to young adults (18-35)

2) be least marginally related to the themes of the game (collaborate
on a global scale, play, sports, learn, community building, etc.)

3) Each charity should have a central office/HQ on one of the six
different populated continents.

The key metric is that they should be interesting and somewhat viral.
Some examples that we've come up with so far are:

· PlayPumps International www.playpumps.org which brings fresh
drinking water to African towns powered by kids on a playground round-
a-bout

· Heifer International www.heifer.org which gives people in
developing communities animals which become self sustaining and then
ask the people to 'pass on the gift' by giving the animal's offspring
to their neighbors.

· Right To Play www.righttoplay.com which uses sport and
'play' to promote health, and foster peace and understanding within
communities around the world.

BUT WE NEED SEVERAL MORE!

So what charities have you heard of recently which piqued your
interest? We need several options from 6 Continents: N. America, S.
America, Europe, Africa, Asia and Australasia.

What a great idea! I love the groups mentioned above but here's some more off the top of my head.

Lush Cosmetics sells a "Charity Pot" lotion that benefits some nice charities, and it should target roughly the same demographic. Those are:

Clean Ocean Action
Amazon Conservation Team
Tree People
UNICEF's Unite for children, Unite for AIDS program
International Fund for Animal Welfare
WaterCan
Oceana
Ocean Conservancy

I personally like Rosa Loves and I know of a couple of other philanthropic tee companies, but I'll have to look up the names and add them in later.

Finally, I also think it would be interesting if the Lost Ring game somehow established a foundation that donates money to local charities, schools or area improvement in the cities around the world where labyrinths are run. It's a nice extra incentive for people to get events going and seeing the improvements/giving people the opportunity to help out would give players a tangible payoff that lasts beyond the end of the game.

Nice PSA for charity: water, seems like a good global cause.

I don't know how much these relate to the game, and they are fairly big, but I personally think they're very good. And they were the only ones I could think of off the top of my head.

National Wildlife Federation
Save Darfur
Amnesty International
Make A Wish Foundation

All of these are global, but I think the SaveDarfur charity is the one that really will be influenced by the Olympics. Because, as (hopefully) most of us know, there is a horrible genocide going on in Dafur, Sudan right now. The janjaweed (sponsored military) are slaughtering millions of innocents there, and Sudan's government, instead of doing everything they can to stop the janjaweed, are actually SPONSORING them.

But one of the major contributors to Sudan's money that they use to pay the janjaweed is China-- as they import most of the oil they get from the Darfur region. (I'm not blaming the Chinese in the least, as I'm sure most Chinese people have no idea about this). The Olympics have already drawn many people's attention because of the whole Tibet thing and if we can get people to pay attention to where most of China's oil is coming from, perhaps we can help to stop this genocide.

/rant over. Sorry.
Also, a smaller charity that is very worthwhile is Nothing But Nets-- for every $10 USD you contribute, a lifesaving mosquito net is sent to malaria-ridden regions of Africa.
