Broadcast News Alerts

I've been thinking for a couple days now that we could really use some sort of Broadcast News Alerts system (aka APB).
Here's what I would expect out of a system like this:
* An easy way for players to sign up to receive alerts.
* Alerts to only be sent when something big happened (like a new puzzle is found).
* Some way to prevent people from abusing the system (spamming).

The benefits of a system like this are that some of us could relax a little more an not feel like they have to check the chat room and the forums 24x7 so that they don't miss anything. (That's how I feel anyway.) I know a lot of people can receive email on their cell phones, so this would give them the freedom to visit outside.html. Even for those who can't get email while they're on the move, they'd still be able to spend time on the computer, but no have to keep checking the chat/forum.

We talked about a few ideas in the chat room. I was thinking of building my own system to do this, then it was pointed out that pretty much any mailing list would work (like Yahoo! Groups). Spacely was kind enough to point out that the uf forum could be used to do this. We'd just need a new forum category that could only be posted to by moderators. There would have to be enough moderators that we could be pretty sure at least one of them would be online at all times. The moderators would have to agree to only post stuff that was important enough to get people's attention. Then, anyone who is interested could subscribe to the posts (not sure exactly how this works).

To warrant a new forum category, there needs to be plenty of interest. My questions to you all are:
1) How interested in a system like this are you?
1a) Would you want to subscribe (receive email)?
1b) Would you like to moderate?
2) Is this a good idea? (Please tell me if it's not.)
3) What are the pros and cons as you see it?
4) What changes do you suggest?

I'm guessing he's talking about the "watch this topic for replies" option in the lower left corner of each thread. If you choose to watch that particular , each time someone posts to it, you get an email. I think it would be a good idea as long as posting to the thread was restricted to only a few responsible people.

We've been talking about this very thing relating to the ilovebees thing. Stay tuned for some sort of solution (email based moderated announcement list or something like that).

OK, I've set up an announce list for ilovebees. Let's see how it goes, and I can set one up for Urban Hunt if you like.

neat

What a neat idea for all the games - it could be one of those links per game like Interactions, References, Puzzles and so forth to be worked through the moderators for that game's set of forums (fori?)

Good job whomever thought of it first!

announce list

To be honest, I don't think this game requires an announce list yet. This forum is still quite manageable.

That's if you have time to check the forum. I want to be able to jump on a puzzle as soon as it's available, but not have to stay on the forum or in the chat room 24x7.

Real life has been totally interfering with my involvement with Urban Hunt, dammit! Bang Head I've been wondering what I've been missing, and I think a yahoo group would be a perfect easy for people to stay up to date with big events; e.g., solved puzzles, website updates, scheduled interactive events, etc. It would definitely give me the opportunity to stay in touch wiithout having to filter through the entire UF UH forum boards...

Anybody wanna set up an RSS feed for those of us with smartphones? Geek

If we really want to do this we can just set up the thread here that is for major updates only. Everyone who wants notification can then just watch the topic. That way we can avoid adding another board/website to check Wink

It isn't perfect, but the Wiki has an RSS feed for the "Recent Changes" page.
