 Any french ARG ?
...and others would-be player questions

Hey there,

I just discovered the whole concept of ARG and, as everyone, i want to jump in too !

So, after reading the quickstart guide and lurking the forum, i've got several questions i hope you'll be able to answer :

- First of all : do you know of any ARG in french ? or at least involving some real life interactions (phone call, meeting, ...) when living in France ?

- If not, could you point me to an ARG, not too old (i know it says in the quickstart that it doesn't mean much), that could be a good "real" start in the ARG realm (i've already done ErrantMemory). Of course, being in France, i would prefer an ARG which involve interaction that i can do without taking a plane....

- I "started" Triangle Mystery (not much to do right now). Any chance it's a real ARG ? i feel it's important to be here at the very beginning of an ARG (for storyline en fun purpose) and as it's the only one i managed to catch before it really starts, i really hope it's a real one

- Any ARG you're about to start and want to bring me into ?

Thanks for the answers (if any) !

Hi Khaos, and welcome.

An ARG that is running now and has a French component is Find the Lost Ring. Now, it has been running for a while, so it may take some effort to catch up, but it is a well-funded ARG that has a French-speaking character (Lucie) and even things to do in France (as I write this, there is still an object in Brest that needs to be picked up).

In my opinion, the game needs some French players. Each character has an in-game forum in their native language, and Lucie's could use some more posts.

you also might be interested in The Rivard Project. It is under News and Rumors. It is done in French and English, and has a lot of french backgrounds to it..

Guess i'll have to ask another question then : how do you manage to get into an ARG in progress. There is like tons of info (at least for the lost ring one) and no way to know if part of it has already be covered or not.

I can't just pop in and say "hello, i don't have a clue of what you're all talking about but i'll be glad to give a hand !"

I maybe should choice some more recent ARG (even if there is no french involved)... dunno.

Any advice ? should i try to catch the old runners of the lost ring ? or will i still be far away (and lost) when the whole thing will end ?

There are several ways to handle this.

Actually, it's not really a that bad of a thing to say. It a: let's people know you're new and b: that you're willing to help out. It only gets a bit tiring when newcomers skip all the "NEW? START HERE!" posts and start making up new threads willy nilly. Generally it's easier to get more guided/specific help if you can make it to the IRC chat, but if you can't and you have questions that you think are 'stupid' or 'silly' try looking for a "QUESTIONS/No Trout" thread thats specifically designed for questions that you think have been asked a million times. Established players are almost always willing to help newcomers get started (especially if the newcomers are willing to put in a bit of effort). They'll be able to point you toward the "Story So Far" threads and general overview posts and can even tell you what is the next thing needing to be done right now. If you don't want to actually post your questions, then use the Private Messaging system and contact someone who seems to be familiar with the game. (And don't forget to use the Search button before you post new 'discoveries' to make sure that they really are new).

That's also another tactic. But remember in the long run, you'll put more effort into staying up to date on a brand new game than by catching up on an old one. It's sorta like the difference between watching a tv show when it first airs with all its commercial glory vs waiting a while and watching it via dvr/dvds. You not only get to skip all the commercials, but you can also avoid the really awful episodes that no one likes. You don't have to go back and read every last post while catching up on an older game. You can just skip around to the good parts and avoid all the downtime that the original players had.

It really doesn't take all that long to get caught up on older games - especially if you get advice on what highlights you should be concentrating on. I've come into games over a month late and written extensive (aka time consuming) guides during the catch-up process and still only taken about a week to catch up. Might seem like a long time, but in the grand scheme of things (especially if the update schedule is only about twice a week) it's really not that much.

heh, was about to suggest it. It's based out of Montreal, and we need a lot of help in terms of French translation when they fail to provide an English translation.
