[META] If it turns out to be nothing... then what?

I was reading on the wiki about the Fervent claims that there won't be any Halo 2 demo, and it got me thinking.

If this isn't about Halo, or a Halo 2 demo, will you still watch this thing? To me, the ARG's value is only its connections to Halo, and I'd be hard pressed to do any more than a cursory look every couple weeks to see whats new.

I could make this a broader topic, I suppose, which is why I put 'meta' cuz it seemed the most right. For you, whats the payoff for the ILB thing?

For me, as is obvious, its Halo.

It depends on whixch group you came in from. If you came in only as a H2 fan type, then you will pretty much leave out of disappointement, especially if the game veers off into its own mythology which I feel that the H2 type will not be patient enough to work with.

The ARG player type is salivating at the mouth of the prospect of new mysteries and story and puzzles of a good ARg, which this one promises to be. this is the group that will stay on and finish the ARG and will work the next ones that come down the line.

Some will cross over into the ARG community and become rabid fans of the genre but I dont see the reverse happening.

The funny thing is, since this ARG is a Halo 2 ad of sorts, making those people "leave out of dissapointment" would be the last thing you'd want - after all, the ARG is designed to get people constantly interested in Halo 2, and will most likely end after H2 becomes more visible.

As a sorta side note, this is why I think there will be something. Bungie ain't that stupid to just make an ad which seems to have a Halo-related end result, and then not do one.

Although I wouldn't say I'm now a 'rabid' Halo 2 fan, I'd say I'm definitely more interested. I played Halo when it was released, but didn't really look into the back story (nor did I really know there was one). But know that I've been introduced to the full storyline, I'm more excited about Halo 2. I might even buy it on release day.

Oh, and to answer the original question...

I'll stick around whether or not ilb has anything to do with Halo 2.

Almost there...

Well, we'll find out SOMETHING tomorrow at least. Just think, one day away, then hopefully things will get real interesting again.

Woot woot.

Well, that's how some have chosen to see it. It's still possible that the ARG is an independent venture (possibly by Bungie) which used the hype of Halo 2 to launch itself. So it may be that the Halo 2 trailer was an ad for the ARG.

Scumbag: its not a case of making people leave out of disappointement, it would be a case of them leaqving on their own if the HA story veers into its own mythology which is seperate from halo. If you look back to the Beast, while it was set in the world of AI, it gave basically no true dives into the storyline but rather was setting the stage based on it's mythos, more of a backstory fleshing out, as it were.

Varin: even though I do game design and repair for a living, never got into Halo, the only home systems I have are my old programming fixtures for the Nintendo 8 bit and the Neo Geo. Sotrt of fun sticking round HA for me, but am waiting with baited breath (here we go again) for Syzygy....

I've never been a huge Bungie fan, don't own an XBox, don't plan too in the near future, and only got caught up on the basic story of Marathon/Halo after getting into ILB.

To me it's just a nifty way to tell a story. Course I've also always been a sucker for unreliable narrators with a penchant for surrealism.

Well for me, and I would assume for most ARG fans who are in this cause it's an ARG, the payoff is the story. A good story, well told, and that involves the players, is what makes playing an ARG fun. It's free entertainment, and you don't get much of that nowadays.

I don't plan on EVER buying Halo 2, but I admit that the universe that Bungie has created is certainly interesting and well thought out. If the ILB story is also, it should be a great game, well worth playing.

I remember that similar questions came up during the playing of The Beast. Some people were just content to play for the joy of playing, while others were hoping for some kind of "payoff" at the end. I don't recall now if it was planned by the PMs from the beginning, but the eventual payoff (if I recall correctly, someone correct me if I misremember) were tickets to limited pre-release screenings of the movie A.I. Personally, I would have been happier with a T-shirt, but in the end, it wasn't important.

Anyway, if there is to be ANY kind of "payoff" for this game, it most likely would be like a $10 coupon/rebate for Halo 2 for the first 500 players that find the final site/page pointed to by the final puzzle. Since it's only the Halo players that seem to really CARE about a payoff, that should make most of them happy they played.

For us ARGers, it will (hopefully) be a satisfying conclusion to the story that pays us off. Smile

Well, it's certainly about Halo, if only in the same sense that Halo is about Marathon is about Pathways into Darkness. But I don't think there's going to be a direct connection with Halo 2, or with the game itself. It's probably best understood as a standalone narrative within the Haloverse.

Honestly...if you're just here for a possibility of a demo...youre kinda missing the point, and youre going to be disappointed no matter what. They wouldn't limit the demo to players and people who pay attention to this, and its pretty much a waste of time if you aren't interested in the "experience" at all. The only real "reward" for Beast players was their handles on a poster (I think there was more stuff handed out maybe at the "meet" in NY, Chicago, and LA? but I was too young at the time). Pretty much if you're physically only interested in the Halo 2 game for the X-Box, I have a feeling this will disappoint you.

If youre interested in the Halo back story, the books, the universe, etc. I have a feeling it'll be worth it to stick around. Like mentioned earlier, the AI game didnt relate directly to the movie, but instead fleshed out the universe and made it more full. If youre buying books the relate to the game, or if you're interested in the history/back-story, you'll enjoy it and its worth you playing getting into it. The whole ARG thing may or may not turn out to be your bag, but if you can relate to the story, you'll have a good time with it.

Most ARG'ers will enjoy it too I think, due to the fact that its a promising ARG that may be Beast-creator related.

Just to weigh in, since I am one of those people who liked Halo a lot, but never was into the backstory (and would never be posting in really any forum, much less a Bungie forum), yet as you can see, I'm quite prolific here (hopefully not to a fault!?)...

Anyway, I had never heard of ARGs before, but I would say I'm the type of personality that they were designed for, and I'm now hooked. If this turns out to have ANYTHING to do with HALO 2 at all or not, it's still good marketing, because people are talking about it. If anything, it says good on Microsoft for trying this alternate avenue of marketing! (Anyone rather have a bazillion pop-ups? Didn't think so...)

But I'm hooked for life now, and am proud to work my grubby little nose into this community, if they'll have me. And I'll constantly be looking for the next ARG, be it video game related, or not. (Heck, I'm seeing ARGs where they aren't already! Laughing )

in summary

One of my favorite truisms about ARGs is "when things slow down, META happens."

People have observed that this is the first attempt to bring an ARG into a broad mainstream gaming community. Some people will like it, some people won't. Still, the overlap between the two sets may be larger than first imagined. For example:

At my house, our receipt for the pre-order of the limited edition of Halo 2 remains on the refrigerator, where it is starting to yellow with age. Guess it is possible to love literature, poetry and great story telling and also enjoy blowing things up.
