[META/OT] Sections from a book "The Secret Life of Bees

I have to read this book this summer for school and so far I've come across these quotes from bees at the top of each chapter. Maybe you can help me make something of it, but from what I'm gettingplainly, bees can be easily seen as the covenant. Maybe the covenant hav ea queen? Not sure, but I'm thinking this coudl help with something. If not, then don't flame me please. Jsut thoguht I could help.

"The queen, for her part, is the unifying force of the community; if she is removed from the hive, the workers very quickly sense her absence. After a few hours, or even less, they show unmistakable signs of queenlessness." - Man and Insects

"On leaving the old nest, the swarm normally flies only a few meters and settles. Scout bees look for a suitable place to start the new colony. Eventually, one location wins favor and the whole swarm takes to the air."
- Bees of the World

You can guess what that could correlate to.

"New beekeepers are told that the way to find the elusive queen is by first locationg her circle sof attendants." - The Queen Must Die: And Other Affairs of Bees and Men

"Honeybees are social insects and live in colonies. Each colony is a family unit, comprising a single, egg-laying female or queen and her many sterile daughters called workers. The workers cooperate in the food-gathering, nest-building and rearing the offspring. Males are reared only at the times of year when their presence is required." - Bees of the World

"Let's imagine for a moment that we are tiny enough to follow a bee into a hive. Usually the first thing we would have to get used to is the darkness..." - Exploring the World of Social Insects

"The queen must produce some substance that attracts the workers and that con obtained from her only by direct contact. The substance evidently stimulates the normal working behavior in the hive. This chemical messenger has been called "queen substance." Experiments have shown that the bess obtain it directly from the body of the queen." - Man and Insects

"How did bees ever become equated with sex? THey do not live a riotous sex like themselves. A hive suggests cloister more than bordello" - THe Queen Must Die: and Other Affairs of Bees and Men

^ I'm not sure that helps... ?

"Honeybees depend not only on physical contact with the colony, but also require its social companionship and support. Isolate a honeybee from her sisters and she will soon die." - The Queen Must Die: and Other Affairs of Bees and Men

"The whole fabric of honey bee society depends on communication -- on an innate ability to send and receive messages, to encode and decode information." - The Honey Bee

^ Just interesting...

"A bee's life is but short. During a spring and summer -- the most strenuous periods of foraging -- and worker bee, as a rule, does not live more than four or five weeks ... Threatened by all kinds of dangers during their foraging flights, many workers die before they have reached even that age." - The Dancing Bees

"It takes honeybee workers ten million foraging trpipts to gather enough nectar to make one pound of honey." - Bees of the World

"If the queen were smarter, she would probably be hopelessly neutoric. As is, she is shy and skittish, possibly becasue she never leaves the hive, but spends her days confined in darkness, a kind of eternal night, perpetually in labor ... Her true role is less that of a queen than mother of hte hive, a title often accorded to her. And yet, this is something of a mockery because of her lack of maternal instincts or the aility to care for her young." - The Queen Must Die: and Other Affairs of Bees and Men

"A worker bee is just over a centimeter long and weighs only about sixty milligrams; nevertheless, she can fly with a load heavier than herself." - The Honey Bee

"A queenless colony is a pitiful and melancholy community; there may be a mournful wail or lament from within ... without intervention, the colony will die. But introduce a new queen and the most extravagant change takes place." - The Queen Must Die: and Other Affairs of Bees and Men

And that's it. Interesting. What do you think?

That's some interesting info, but I'm just not sure how any of it would fit the situation with the website. I thought about some of the bee connections as well, since it hasn't really been addressed in these forums since the beginnning.

It's been brought up that Russian-"Yugo" Carniolan bees are highly resistant to Varroa mites, as they were bred for almost that express reason. Which makes Margaret seem suspect. In fact, if you Yahoo! search for Russian-"Yugo" Carniolan bees, the first page that comes up is http://www.honeybeegenetics.com/stockbees.html, which is a Honey Bee Genetics webpage found in... Vacaville, CA.

Carniolan bees are also well known for their ability to be productive in cold places, which makes it odd that Margaret would own them in the first place. Carniolan bees are grey and black bees, so all the pictures on the website don't really look like Margaret's bees, which is also strange.

The best bee-analogy I could come up with is the idea that when a queen dies or is lost, a new queen must be selected. This is done by feeding a substance called royal jelly to larvae. Perhaps if the Widow and Flea are taken to be worker bees, and the flea thinks the queen is dead, then she is trying to awaken the Sleeping Princess (larvae). Of course, I have found no ties to royal jelly in the info we have, so this is probably a ridiculous spec.

Royal jelly is also very beneficial to both bees and humans for it's healthy properties.

On the Myth of Comitas text, I think I might have actually been on to something.

Quote:
Shipwrecked sailor. (The young stage of a bee found him, the clever one, adrift on a wine-dark sea, but I can't remember her name.)

This subject should have been researched further, as now we're getting lots of bee messages from in-game characters.
