Mirror of Kin - darn, so close! Too focussed on the brothers!

Brothers?

When the Aztecs adopted the culture of the Toltecs, they made twin gods of Tezcatlipoca and Quetalcoat, opposite and equal; Quetalcoatl was also called White Tezcatlipoca, to contrast him to the black Tezcatlipoca. Together, they created the world; Tezcatlipoca lost his foot in that process.

I was looking at this the other day, seriously!

Tezcatlipoca has also got another name., Xlotl or something.

Edit: It's Xolotl.

wikiquote: His name in the Nahuatl language is often translated as "Smoking Mirror" and alludes to his connection to obsidian, the material from which mirrors were made in Mesoamerica and which was used for shamanic rituals.

Mirror of ink looks like it has it!

We really should have looked harder at this book when it was mentioned sooooo long ago!

EDIT: A link to another book that look's at Mirror

I second that.

So we are left with the true names question, and whilst they are likely to be written in beautiful script upon a folded piece of parchment inside a leather bound copy of the Mirror of Ink, would anyone care to join in with some idle speculation?

List of names:
John Dee / Dr Doom
Tweedle Dee / Tweedle Dum (not true names)
Dan / Adrian
Hermes / Thoth (Hermes Trismegistus)
Tezcatlipoca and Quetalcoatl
Jungian archetypes?

Any more?

EDIT: Missed out Maltravers! See my post below.

At the risk of repeating something that's been posted as I write this...

The Mirror of Ink contents:
http://www.locusmag.com/index/yr2005/t51.htm#A2693

Might be useful?

I think this book is a collection of stories published together by Penguin for it's 70th birthday in '05, maybe a small paperback might have gotten lost amongst Hattie's junk?

BTW remember, one brother is suppossed to fictional, unless M-A was wrong about that.

EDIT:(from Penguin)
Quote:
This collection includes seven of his most famous tales, which intrigue, inspire and mesmerize through their singular genius.

EDIT 2: Have just emailed the info from Alice.
Just a thought, what did M-A's email to Alice say, I wonder?

I'm going to leave you to it for a while. I'm getting a headache from staring at the screen too long.

Seven tales, eh? Sounds familiar. Wink

I wondered why 8pm on the 8th sounded familiar to me and it turns out it's when I agreed to call my aunt next week. Unlike last time I've no ulterior motive for being in London so I'm quite happy to shout slogans from the by-lines instead. Smile

Your aunt...

Could this be significant?

Staying up till 5am writing stories for a man in a mirror can have that effect. Maybe you should see a Doctor?

The true hidden names

Does this theory make sense to anyone?

True names - one real and one fictional (course this rather depends on your interpretation of "fictional"):

John Dee and The Devil Question

Dr Doom=Harrison Maltravers=The Devil ?
http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?t=24595&start=282

How hidden are these names (especially that of John Dee) to Thomas? Or are they only hidden to the hookah-smoking caterpillar?

Maybe we have to set fire to the mirror to destroy it?

Quote:
Fire is still the most important element of most Beltane celebrations and there are many traditions associated with it. It is seen to have purifying qualities which cleanse and revitalise.

Googling Borges and Doom turned up this influence (see third paragraph).

Could Niles Caulder be our Dr Doom?

It fits quite nicely with the classic/modern symmetry of we tell stories, but I'm not sure I'm convinced!

And it ties in nicely with the Secret Society in the London Underground too!
