Cloverfield/Kishin... Canon or not? what do you guys think? i'm hoping for some decent thoughts here... i know the subject of "canon or no" has been semi-discussed on the Kishin Update topic, but i think a discussion about this deserves its own place.
personally, the theories connecting the two CAN make sense, but are a little far-fetched... i'm still unsure myself. what do y'all think?

I think it's more like parable than documentary. I also think it's context is thus symbolic more than literal. It is 'canon' in the sense it's official Cloverfield promotional content. It's like a layer outside of the reality of the people in Cloverfield, but it's exact context is a bit nebulous. Is it fiction to us in parallel to the film, or is it also a fiction that the characters in the film itself could be aware of? Consider Slusho, which is very real to the film's world and people, but is fiction to us. Next consider unFiction itself, which is very real to us and apparently outside the scope of reality to the film's characters. We are aware of both, and we know whether the film's characters are aware of each and if each is in their world or ours. I don't think we really know where Kishin lies yet.
Of course, only down the road will we know.

I don't think it's cannon. It takes too much away from the realistic, "this really could happen" concept the movie was going for. The manga has that cartoon, anime type style of a kid being bullied then suddenly gains random magic power or strong ally then goes on a mission to right wrongs. On it's own, it ain't that bad, but the movie should be on a seperate timeline or whatever term you want to use. If the manga does well enough I wouldn't be surprised to see an anime style mini series, but it still wouldn't be cannon.

I agree with cysubtor on this one. Too outside the original feel, too much connection to an outside culture (Japanese), and plus there's that screaming feeling that it's not what the film makers imagined.
Not to say it's not a fun story, mind you. It's interesting, but probably not for everyone. I think it can be safely assumed that the events of Kishin will not figure into a movie sequel in any way.

i'm agreeing as well. it just seems so far-fetched based on the movie.
the only notably interesting things are the possibilty of the cult being some faction of TIDOwave, and whatever ends up being the deal with that pod. but still, probably completely seperate. a few guys and i had been pouring out theories to how they could connect, but it just seems too unrealistic at this point. but who knows? episode four could end with the monster hitch-hiking it's way to NY.
you know, in an oil tanker. or swan diving off of a satellite.

Although I understand from the rest of your post your overall intent, I found it funny that you used the Japanese as "outside culture" to exclude this from plausibility as an in-world thing for the characters of Cloverfield. Rob is moving to Japan, speaks of the cultural differences (at least language) in the film. Japan does exist in their world.
Now if only Charlie's deleted scene about anime porn had made it in, this would seem even more likely to be in-world.

The cultists aren't a faction of TIDOWave, TIDO didn't know about the monster until they saw it, and seem to be based in France & the US. The cultists are a faction, if not the majority, of Tagruato. The Slusho shiney happy people it seems. They are based in Japan, have people throught the company at all levels and have been spreading even into the Japan Defense Force. And they have known about, and been awaiting, the monster for a long time...

Quick question. Has the word Majin come up before in the manga or anywhere else?

Of course it IG! How the hell is it not?! </justbeingadumbasswisecrack>
Seriously... I don't know what happened, but someone screwed up... and I guess I'm back from a 3 month leave from the forum
Of course, only a handful might remember me, since everyone else is new to me. Even my Av pic is expired.
I actually miss mega-threads.

not magical powers...... it seems they found something in the ocean. the "pod" as they call it. a very small, organic looking sphere that was emitting something similar to radio waves. after they studied the hell out of it, they discovered clover. the devices was emitting some kind'f signal to clover.
kishin's, mom, working for the cult, only married kishin's father and HAD kishin, so she could get close to this "pod". she then stole the pod, and somehow (i'd assume surgically or something, it doesn't say) implanted it inside of kishin.
his integration with the pod inside of him makes his extreme emotions resonate with the monster. it's not that he CONTROLS it, but something connects between the two. when he's in a fit of rage, the monster wakes up and throws a hissy-fit. for some reason, the monster protects him at the end.
so what could the pod be?
my most rational thought is - an egg.
kishin's father refers to it as "the splinter of amnion". amnion is the protective covering over an embryo. could explain why the pod and monster have a connection... or at least, it makes more sense than thinking there's a garage-door-opener at the bottom of the sea that commands a 350ft tall beast.

It's on canon with the movie although the monster is really the only link between the two.
I hope they publish this translated into english.
