Why wasn't Cloverfield also rated PG-13 for language?

The MPAA is notoriously inconsistent in its ratings. One needs only look at the tactics used in getting Southpark and Team America onto the big screen as proof I.E. the system can be manipulated. (For the Record I liked both movies )

Also while its members are suppose to be reflective of mainstream society in reality the board does not have as much say as the review board which is most definitely not reflective of society.

(review board as of 2006 from Wikipedia and the documentary "This Film Is Not Yet Rated" http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/This_Film_Is_Not_Yet_Rated Which if you have not seen I suggest you try to it is a very good documentary and raises some good questions that the MPAA didn't like answering)

MPAA Appeals Board

According to the investigation done within the film, the following people (as of 2006) have been named as members of the MPAA appeals board:

Matt Brandt, President, Trans-Lux Theaters
Pete Cole, film buyer, The Movie Experience
Bruce Corwin, chairman and CEO, Metropolitan Theatres
Alan Davy, film buyer, Regal Entertainment
Mike Doban, president, Archangelo Entertainment
Steve Gilula, CEO, Fox Searchlight Pictures
Frank Haffar, COO, Maya Cinemas
John Lodigian, vice president of sales, Sony Pictures
Michael McClellan, vice president and film buyer, Landmark Theatres
Milton Moritz, CA/NV chapter president, North American Theatre Owners
Len Westenberg, VP of operations, west coast division, Loews Cineplex Theatres
Jonathan Wolf, director, American Film Market
The Reverend James Wall, United Methodist Church minister representative, National Council of Churches
Harry Forbes, representative, United States Conference of Catholic Bishops

Yep I run into people like this every day.

My uptight-o-meter is off the charts right now...

j/k

These are the type of people who often say "We do this for the good of the greater good" or some thing like that, but don't exactly represent it.

That's got quite the huge amount of holes in it.

The ESRB actually pulls people off the street to do the ratings for games.

The next time you question why that game was rated M, remember, someone's mom might have rated it Razz

Wow, didn't know that. Ok, ESRB is off my bash list, unless the overrate a game.

Yeh, I watched an entire show on the creation of the ERSB and they keep it pretty fair, they have 3-4 regular people watch a video of the game, they do a little review of language, sex, etc. Then there's another group who takes that and decides based on the three opinions what to do. So far, I haven't seen anything Over rated, just under rated.

A lot of it hinges on the F-word, To get an R Rating you have to say it quite a good number of times, words close to Fuck, like *3#$$*, etc, apply as well, but shit, bitch, you can say as much as you like, to a degree I assume.

I hate that word you used and don't remember seeing it anywhere else on this forum, so I decided to search to see if it was used anywhere else and it has. Congratulations, you are 1 of 3 people who feels the need to use it, even if being explanatory.

No, you dont understand...mpaa decided to not include language for the reasons its pg-13.

And yeah edit your post...its disrespectful and people dont appreciate that word especically. Edit your entire post infact...mods dont like swearing.

yea i would edit it, i was considering cussing you out... But i understand what you mean.

Holy crap.

Guys, seriously, get your knickers out of your arses. If he was using it as an insult then fine, I can understand the righteous indignation. But he was using it as an example.

Shit, you guys better not play Grand Theft Auto: San Andreas or listen to any rap or watch a Spike Lee film 'cause your heads'll explode.

It's because people respond like that to words that it's still got negative connotation...but I digress, it IS a bad word that should no longer exist.

I would ask that you make indirect reference to racial epithets. The word is pretty grating and not really necessary when just making a point. I play GTA games and I could live without it in those games - but it at least has a real contextual meaning there. Those games are also labeled as adult, 'R-rated' type content. This forum is more along the lines of PG-13 - the occasional swear word used in context is not a big deal. It's when it exists solely for it's own sake that it becomes an issue - and usually that sake is an issue when someone is just swearing at someone else on the forum.

I think in balance of the whole, the swearing was a bit less noticeable in the film compared to the more fearsome nature of people dying in various graphic and disturbing ways.

Actually...this whole thing proves why the rating system is so drastic, people would instantly notice, and be appalled/shocked by, the F or N or other words equally as bad or worse even amongst people dying, but a few s's and dbags can be gotten away with...

thank you for clarifying, euchre.

exactly, coarse language is only perceived as coarse if it's used in an intentional way. racial slurs aren't good... not at all. but at least when it was said, it was simply stated. no one was calling eachother names.

good ground for etiquette on this forum.

you wanna cuss? don't make it gratuitous. and don't cuss at other users.

In the interview with the writer he spoke about the language and the rating. He specifically included on instance of the F word that he felt was inportant to the movie and Rob's motivation. It was cut to keep the pg-13 rating. It was Jason talking to Rob and saying "Sometimes Rob, you have to say, Fuck the world.." just before the lights went out in the apartment.

He says 'screw the world' in the final release. If I remember right.
