Uh, seems to me there was a similar discussion about some comments made in an interview with Matt Reeves, or was it Drew Goddard? As I recall they both made effectively incorrect or misleading statements in interviews. This whole affair has been a game of misinformation for a while. We have a Dharma logo with Abrams saying Cloverfield has nothing to do with Lost - which I agree as far as no relationship beyond the mere presences of the logo.

Remember, these folks seem to delight in driving their fans batshit insane.

You all seem to be forgetting:

1) Godzilla was killed off at the end of his first movie, and then again in the 90's in "Godzilla vs Destroyah". That didn't stop Toho from making sequels, by either ignoring the death or explaining around it (another Godzilla)

2) In the same vein, multiple times the major opponents of Godzilla like Ghidorah and Mecha-Godzilla are killed off and brought back.

3) Even King Kong died and came back for a sequel or two.

In short, even an obvious death in the movies doesn't mean farewell if the franchise demands a sequel. You can't even call JJ's quote an 'obvious death' in the scheme of things. There's no footage to back it up, nor is there any accepted canonical source saying that indeed the military succeeded. It's just an offhanded comment by someone who's not the writer and not the director. Maybe, in his mind, the military won...but that's not definitive and is surely not the absolute conclusion Reeves and Goddard wanted us to come to.

IMHO, JJ was speaking off the cuff. He may have even been slyly referencing Godzilla, as I stated above, in that you can kill off the monster and still bring him back. Either way, it's nothing to get high blood pressure over. Even if he was stating 'canon' it can easily be retconned in the future.

you can complain or go crazy but that doesn't make Paramount/Bad Robot put out a new Cloverfield sequel any sooner.

When this turns out to be false info JJ's not even going to address that he ever said this. Maybe it's just an easier version of the truth for the casual watchers who just wanted some closure on the movie. I dunno. If he died during the bombing it would have been apparent in the film.

which may as well be translated to "eventually".

doesn't mean he died at the end of the film. it just means that at some point, ultimately, the bombs will kill him. who knows. they could nuke him or something. all we know is that based on the film, he's not dead yet.

it's not like clover was invincible. it's been said in other articles, and in another post on here by yours truly, that they just weren't using the right weapons. if an army tank is the size of your damn toenail, do you really think that an RPG or a tank shell is going to really do anything to you? no. it would be like one of your drunk buddies shooting a bottle rocket at you, or popping you in the ass with a BB gun. it would just make you angry, scared, and annoyed.

now, if your friend threw a stick of dynamite at you, you would probably be in trouble.

put that analogy to scale, and sure, they could kill clover. clover probably IS dead, but he just doesn't die in the film. maybe he dies in the sequel. which i, for one, am sure there will be.

I think we're missing something bigger here: This is the first time someone asked "what was the thing that fell from the sky?". Notice he said there are 2 ways they could go, so assuming A: Satellite or B: Monster falling from Sky.
I'm starting to wonder if JJ and Reeves approve of the online viral that a Japanese company was responsible. But, then again, JJ's name is on the Manga.

I like to think the manga is just some sort of "fan-fic", but made by JJ. Like its just for fun.. I wouldnt be amused if it turns out to be part of the viral story that we are following.
