The Mystery of the Goddam ABBA

1. I spot RangerD wandering around.
2. We meet up. He goes to the bathroom. Suddenly from behind me I hear "Nice shirt!" (I was wearing my I am Mythopoeia shirt)
3. The four of us meet up and I discover that Cineball and Momonga aren't coming. (I spent the morning taking SATs, so I didn't get much of a chance to check online)
4. Ariock and Pita show me the poster. It's hysterical.
5. Ariock finishes transcribing the cypher and splitting it into groups of 5.
6. I whip out my sidekick and get the cipher. We begin decoding.
7. After some wierdness RangerD notices that it's a tinyurl.
8. Someone online cracks it before us.
9. We wonder what the hell ABBA has anything to do with anything.
10. I check tinyurl.com/6pu8fn and tinyurl.com/6pu8fn and the same things with V instead of U. Nothing.
11. RD comes up with the NZ herald by ignoring the ABBA. With the V we discover a LotR picture, apparently taken from a deleted scene.
12. We puzzle over it.
13. RD announces that he had stolen someone's WiFi while in his car, so we return to his car and he whips out his laptop.
14. We try many things, but don't come up with anything definitive.
15. Finally we agree to go get some food. I accidentally miss the restaurant the first time >.<
16. I swing by BART and pick up a friend of mine who had forgotten that the labyrinth running was today.
17. We eat dinner and discuss random topics.
18. Glen (my friend) and I head out at about 6:20ish.

19. As soon as they leave, Abba arrives and starts performing in the pub.
20. We skedaddle.

I had posted my transcription to twitter, but left off the first several groups of 5 characters. Addlepated was the one who decoded the rest of the url and sent it via twitter.

Ok the Tinyurl thing.

My experience with a broken (and then fixed) bacon cypher last night, lead me to fear the worse. And elrond and the herald just wasn't ringing any bells.

Working back from this, whilst catching up exploring all avenues just now, in i.r.c. (come join us!) Sapagoo said the tinyurl from these flyers could point to the http://historyofantiquity.googlepages.com/ site, that Thermantia / Theo has left us. And was wondering if it was possible to "reverse engineer" a tinyurl code.

Now, Ive noticed that tinyUrl caches its results, so that if you enter in a address again, it will give the first one entered.

Lo and Behold:
type in:
http://historyofantiquity.googlepages.com/home
and you get:
http://tinyurl.com/6pv846

Thus: Theo & cohorts were at the training games!

not sure how you can get the 46, however. At least Abba is a red (Swedish) herring

the code we got was
SIX p v EIGHT f ABBA
the code we should have got was
SIX p v EIGHT F OUR SIX

ABBA is the first 4 characters of O in bacon.

So somehow the code got cut off, they almost got the F and O of FOUR.

Great job chippy.. Good thinking on looking for the cache too.
It almost certainly means that it was not a gamejack or red herring, but a specific clue that was left for us, and was just done incorrectly.

They were close, but no cigar.
So the message they left us should have been
Code:
BAABAABAAAABBAABABBABAABBBAAAAABABAAAABAABBABABABBBAAABABAAABABABABBBABAABBAABAAABAAAAABBAAABBBBAABAAABABABBABBAABBBAAAABAAABABAAABABAB

With the added ability to do regular Bacon e/d now on my tool, hopefully they won't bork it again.

with 6 missing letters (OURSIX) that's nearly 30 missing AB! in this case, it was only 26, because the O was partially constructed.. but that's a lot of characters to go missing.. they better look around on the floor...

maybe it was intentional and the last part was supposed to remain hidden.. *smile* Sometimes its just easier to believe these things are intentional, isn't it?

Nicely done!

I do not see anything about this historyofantiquity site on the Wiki BTW.

Need to flesh it out.. its kinda hidden inside the email communications with Thermantia. We need to flesh out the page and explain a bit of the history of the code, discoveries, etc.

great sleuthing there chippy!

And yeah, aside from blogs, recent events haven't yet been added to the timeline... they'll be added shortly.

actually historyofantiquity was added - the message from Thermantia is in the timeline.
Perhaps the event should be added to Thermantia's character wiki page as well. (well, yes, it should =)

Chippy,

Wow! You are awesome! My hat is off to you! Not that I am wearing a hat, but if I were, it would totally be off right now, which it is. See? No hat: Worshippy

And a tasty treat, also with no hat: Brownie

P.S. Hats are not all that bad, really, but they do not indicate true admiration, or so I've been led to believe.

Just a thought:

Could there be a connection between ABBA (e.g. the band) and "our six" or is it pure coincidence that the missing characters have some meaning, because the amnesiacs are really our six?

Nevertheles, Great reengineering!
