Dr. Eugene Gough Biography

Hi, I'm Alex and I'm new to ARGs. Been reading up on this Holomove thread and although I'm no cryptographer or programmer I thought I'd stop lurking and put my thoughts down.

It seems that whatever's going on here Dr. Gough is the real mystery.

Firstly he's the subject of the memo, described as having emotional issues and refusing to see the counsellor, and is refused a contract extension at LANL. This was in 1985.

(this memo says that Michael, the author, cannot rationalise 14 FTEs. what does FTE mean? Edit. Full Time Employees, I guess.)

Now he's credited as part of the team at Holomove (in the 'who we are' section) even though he passed away last year before the site went live. (Although the bulletin about his death is in what seems to be a retrospective archive, after the appointment of Poulopatis.)

It seems strange to me that Gough started Holomove (as NexTech) in 2004 at the age of 77. That's pretty old to be founding a research and development company.

There is a www.NexTech.com, I don't know if it's real or not. It's not entirely functional though from what I can gather it's about plastic surgery or something, and looks a bit under-developed to be connected to Holomove ARG (all the other links are better developed - probably a coincidence, although the only prominent feature is a graph that seems to have an exponential growth curve which has a tenuous link to the theories of Ray Kurzweil (coming up).

Strangely in the 'news & events' story, Holomove, Inc. CEO Expresses Sympathy on Death of Dr. Eugene Gough, Gough is listed as dying age 60, when he should have been 80 in 2007. Probably just a typo (or a font that isn't very easy for me to read and it does say 80), as it's not a particularly well written story:

Quote:
Poulopatis said, "We are deeply saddened by this news," said George Poulopatis...

Apparently Gough was "lost in a tragic accident off the coast of Belize."

In the Holomove 'news & events' the Anarchy/Reach the Future ad campaign is described. It is intended to:

Quote:
"raise awareness of the groundbreaking holographic technology... next generation UI... reverse haptics and sound projections."

I Googled Reverse Haptics, and found a link to a book called The Age of Spiritual Machines, I'd read about this book recently when I looking up the technological singularity, and so I knew it was by Ray Kurzweil... who... was the subject of the interview which contains the hidden code for the job application. Info on the book is at: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/The_Age_of_Spiritual_Machines

So it turns out reverse haptics is the idea of technology touching the real world.

Total speculation: is this ARG about a scientist who achieves a kind of immortality by creating an AI Hologram of himself with the ability to interact in the real world?
Edit: also in Nathan's blog he describes how Gough's office is untouched.
see: http://codewtrn8.blogspot.com/2008/04/puzzles-huh.html
This blog post is very revealing. Most obviously there is the puzzle for gamers to solve with the fake answers filled in by Gough, but also this is a very telling thing to do for a man like Gough. a great puzzle solver making a mess of a puzzle as easy as 'First book ofthe old testament'. He clearly did it deliberately. But leaving a clue behind like this means that you are hiding it from someone. It makes his disappearance categorically suspicious. He knew he was going to disappear. I might post this logic in a comment for Nathan, see how he replies.

Edit: Just researching everything mentioned on the Holomove site.

Gough worked for Los Alamos National Labratory: which "helps to ensure the safety of the nuclear weapons stockpile and reduce the threat of terrorist attacks on our homeland." and then for Ames Laboratory "a government-owned, contractor-operated research facility of the U.S. Department of Energy that is run by Iowa State University." -- both being government facilities/websites makes them seem legit. If I was writing a game and wanted a company to include in a character's back story I'd use a government agency.[/b]

Eight times today (yes ive counted) I have mistyped 'Holomove.com' and put 'Homolove.com'...and now I (rightfully) feel like a moron. That is all.

No, you are not alone. Laughing

I don't have any experience of these ARGs.

Are they usually this thorough and well integrated with the rest of the internet?

I've devised a couple of murder mystery nights that included riddles/puzzles but they were all done as physical challenges at my house, nothing to the extent of this, it's pretty crazy. It's hard to know what is in game and what is out of game.

I followed a blog post by CodeWtrN8 to Bridger's Blog (n multi touch screens) as this is connected to the idea of haptics, i thought I'd take a look around. There is a post by CodeWtrN8 congratulating Bridger on his work.

I find it hard to tell whether this is real or in-game.

If it is in game there is a link to a game called Lumen (which has connections with light, and maybe holograms???) which is offered for free. In my experience you usually have to pay to download such games. Does anyone think this is in-game or am i barking up the wrong tree?
http://fieryferret.com/lumen/lumen.html

edit: ive tried the game seems legit. quite a cool little game though. not bad for nowt.

wow! that's a great find! I remember looking back through the posts with hints to Microsoft, San Diego as well as AT&T as possibles. i don't know why I didn't think of it earlier. Microsoft Surface! AT&T is using Microsoft Surface for a bunch of fun stuff. I saw a demo of Surface running the Lumens game. It isn't a hologram, just a huge multi-touch interface running some slick software but they are pushing it as "the future."

Thats the official site for Surface:
http://www.microsoft.com/surface/index.html

Maybe I'm thinking waaaaay too much into it...

No you're not..it all fits in nicely.

I find it a bit odd that this 17 year old has done so much....
Think we should keep an eye on him.

Edited to remove Trout.

making a multi touch table is actually pretty easy now that there's a bunch of open-source software. i've got a small setup like that to use with Virtual DJ Cool

im confused though because Surface has already been "launched"

CodeWtrN8

I hope this isnt bad ARG etiquette to just write down everything I think because that's what I'm doing.

I've been reading through the CodeWrtN8 blog.
(how are people reading that by the way? I see it as code writer N8, not sure what the N8 means)

Checking his youtube videos, etc.

It seems his cubicle mate is Jay. He's got a thing for Eliza, another colleague. His boss George doesn't like him filming him, in fact most everyone seems a little apprehensive about being filmed at work.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=0zdfwVUlpRg
This clip introduces Eliza, who is a big fan of Your Vegas, too. I assume the music in the background is Your Vegas. Here's the wiki on them:
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Your_Vegas
weird, i'm from Leeds and I've never heard of em. But perhaps whoever is behind this ARG are plugging them. They are signed to Universal for what its worth.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Eo_jtCZzwkc
this one has a strange reference to some handcuffs on Eliza's desk.

the checking in from interop...
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=nmZrBRoEPpM

is seen from an alternate angle in another video titled: Re: Sergey from Coyote Point. Wasn't sure what this means, but Sergey Katsov is a tech for Coyote Point Systems who work behind the scenes for Interop. Which is no help at all. I really don't understand why this video is up twice. It's clearly not real, the characters are clearly actors, but what's the point of it? No idea.
http://youtube.com/user/interopguy

He also works with Smiling lady, Chris Stile, the receptionist I think.
T - is working on something 'top secret' for nathan.
Tawni and Clarice are reading Dirty Dishes magazine.
John
'John-Paul' from france
Noel who seems to have a thing with John Paul.

I read a couple places that people think maybe Microsoft are behind this ARG because of it's production values. Not knowing much about ARGs I wouldnt want to proclaim anything, but these videos of his offices are packed with Macs, I cant imagine any microsoft funded campaign showcasing macs exclusively. however, just a thought, but the onion news clip on nathan's blg is bookended with LG Scarlet ads. One of them featuring a kung fu heroin 'Scarlet'. which rang some bells about Eliza's hobbies of martial arts. you dont think this is a tie in with that somehow do you?

I doubt it. I don't think you'd be able to control which ads bookend the Onion video, it's just whatever they put up there.

I mentioned this yesterday in IRC, but I thought I'd bring it up here, too, due to Alex's post regarding Reverse Haptics.

There is such a thing called the Holomovement, a metaphysical concept involving enlightenment in man's consciousness.

See disputed wiki here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User:Togo/Holomovement

"Holomovement is a metaphysical concept invented by David Bohm describing his visual description of the 'fabric of reality', implying 'undivided wholeness in flowing movement' [1]. The holomovement is the underlying flow (of possibly not yet defined qualities related to thought, matter and energy) in which reality (or the possible realities) can be experienced. The prefix 'holo' combines the reference to 'holistic' with the dimensional depth of the concurrent influencing worlds or flows, that like in a hologram project reality in the interference patterns of its 'substructure'."

It's a pretty interesting concept the more I read into it, but it may be just a coincidental tie in to the name of the company.

With the thoroughness these guys, I'd doubt almost anything they do is a coincidence. Good find!

I was thinking about "Surface" also about two days into this but couldn't remember what it was called.

Then I remembered a small post I made about it last year.
http://konamouse.livejournal.com/11757.html

Whatever this is, I'm enjoying the lurk mode (even though no one has answered my email about my job interest - I think that is just a means to judge activity and gather more contact information - maybe there will be some outward contact in a few more days after the buzz has garnered more new people).

I don't think this is about surface. In his blog, Nathan was talking about the hiring process and the puzzles. He mentioned that there were rumors of a developers challenge in the works and then he said about the company "They are trying to out Microsoft Microsoft and out Google Google."

Put that phrase into Google, and the battle of Microsoft and Yahoo starts coming in, including some about google forcing Microsoft to go after Yahoo. I 'm not going to say its Yahoo, but I think it's too coincidental that the M-Y battle is finally over, and then Holomove is launched...

Also, when Nathan is talking about New Year's Resolutions in his blog, one of his items is "Do something with all my photos". So that may explain Twitter.

Finally, I don't know if this is posted somewhere else already, but I ran a whois of the domain for the comic Zealous Config on Nathan's site, it shows the registrant of xkcd.com as DomainsByProxy.com the servers listed are NS1.SCIESNET.NET & COLOBUS.ISOMERICA.NET

EDIT: I was checking out the about section on xkcd, the guy describing himself as the owner has a section called who are you?
Quote:
I'm just this guy, you know? I'm a CNU graduate with a degree in physics. Before starting xkcd, I worked on robots at NASA's Langley Research Center in Virginia. As of June 2007 I live in Massachusetts. In my spare time I climb things, open strange doors, and go to goth clubs dressed as a frat guy so I can stand around and look terribly uncomfortable. At frat parties I do the same thing, but the other way around.

So a guy who used to work for the government in a research center now draws comics admired by Nathan who works for a company started by a guy who worked for 2 research centers... Now THAT's a coincidence.

I'd say that in itself was nothing, but he's got a link on his site to another which again goes into holomovemnet...

Interesting spec, but I highly doubt that xkcd has anything to do with this. They've been an ongoing webcomic for a long time now.
