Addlepated has it, it was the 80's glory known as Bright Lights, Big City, you can't go wrong with Micheal J. Fox, Kiefer Sutherland and Phoebe Cates

Ironically, I remembered the sampler from the book, not the movie. The movie was pretty good though - and the Jason Robards scenes wonderful.
