Viral Vs. Movie: How was it created?
Speculative ideas

Hey everyone:
I was thinking about this: How exactly was the "viral" story created? Lets put some facts together, and then speculate.
FACT: Slusho was the lead-in to the viral story. We saw it in the preview, then on 1-18-08 on a shirt. Its a recognizable item for JJ Abrams (Like Duff Beer for the Simpsons).
So there it starts. But Slusho was really just the jumping point as it introduced Tagruato. My big question is: Drew G. writes the film, but how much does he approve of this backstory created by (I don't know, a marketing firm, himself?). Now seeing JJ wanted an American monster, how much does he approve of this? I suppose since his name is on the Manga, he approves. I wonder also, does the viral story give away too much regarding the mystery that non-ARG followers like about the movie? How many times have you explained the monster is from a oil rigg in the ocean, and that thing at the end is a satellite?
Your thoughts?

Actually the first site found was 1-18-08.com followed very shortly by Slusho.jp. Tagruato was found as a result of a recipe card listing an ingredient that led in a Google search to a restaurant review which mentioned Tagruato. How's that for convoluted.

I swear when I saw the trailer it didn't just say 1-18-08, but said 1-18-08.com. Maybe my brain just told me that had to be where to go. at any rate, it's fairly clear that something of a viral promotion was what they had in mind from the start, and it would seem that they decided to contract or outsource that to someone they didn't fill in on all of the details.

I was at a thing where Elan Lee from 42 Entertainment was speaking last summer, he was talking to a bunch of (older) TV people about how ARG's work. The sense I got was that when media (tv shows, movies, video games, music) decide to go in to a dedicated ARG, there is some cooperation between all departments. When they did things like "The Cortana Letters" and "I Luv Bee's", the developers knew the effect the viral campaign was going to have on further adventures and the backstory of the games.

The Bad Robot crew grew up at comic cons and Trek conventions. They know what feeding the fan community a back story does. Boba Fett has less that 15 minutes screen time in the original trilogy, but he's one of the most recognizable Sci-Fi characters in the world. It could be possible that the Cloverfield ARG could build Teddy Hanssen in to the protagonist of the next Cloverfield film.

It seems like they hired some people to do the ARG, but didnt keep in contact with them so the ARG people just did what they did and thats why it makes no sense in relation to the movie. Just playing around, or maybe im not.

I saw an interview online with Drew G., and he said he didn't know anything about the viral marketing and had nothing to do with it.
