Secret Sound

Okay gang, a call out for help here.
My family have been trying to guess this "secret sound" on the radio for ages now, and are stumped. Any help on what this could be would be greatly appreciated. Here are the clues that the station has released so far:
What the Secret Sound isn't...
Fluorescent light or starter, chopping board, balls bouncing, door, child's top, ruler vibrating, chocolate wheel, pipes banging, air conditioner, blinds- vertical or other, staplers, nails hammered or removed, popcorn, perforated cardboard strips, petrol cap being tightened, ironing board, fan, office chair, comb, bubble wrap, sticky tape, gas stove ignition, heaters, plastic milk rings, plastic lids, dripping tap, static from clothing, boiling water, clock radio, zipper, typewriter, teledex, kids toys. Nothing being hit or struck, nothing being tapped, may or may not be wet, gravity is not necessary to make the noise, you could take it to the opera (but you may look stupid), nothing hinged, nothing needs to be plugged in, nothing from the stationery cupboard, not a bodily function, only need one hand to make the noise, it is nt organic, could wear it as a hat (or not), nothing to do with a comb or a crash helmet, it is industrial and domestic, indoor and outdoor, no adhesives were used. Made in a room without windows.

Frankly kids, we're out of ideas. My family are really keen to nail this, so as I said, all help greatly appreciated!

well, not *thousands*. This is Australian radio, after all.

But yeah, some form of prize remuneration *is* involved, but hey, ARGers do it for the love, not the money, right?

Right?

Hello? Anybody?

Personally, sounds like a ping-pong ball but you said not 'balls bouncing' so, no idea.

Donning/Doffing a wet suit?

...oh wait, guess you wouldn't really wear a wet suit as a hat, or indoors, eh?

hmmm...

also, if you listen real carefully, about halfway in you'll hear a sort of "ffft" noise inbetween the "tok tok tok" sounds

Another clue they gave was:
You can see it at the car sales yard, and at the hairdressers.

That sounds more like a riddle to me: What do they have in common? "Rollers" (groan)

and bonnets, is it too late to say "bonnets"?

This is pure [SPEC], but perhaps it's the sound of the medical hammer.

The only thing I can think it sounds like that would be at a car sales yard is a twilee sign. http://www.ceemeesigns.co.nz/tw2.htm I've seen them at car sales yards as well as at barbershops.
