[MAIL] A letter from Eli, Ariadne's troubles

I've been writing to Eli every few weeks or so, trying to get a response from him, or even just checking to make sure he was alive and well. I got this reply today:

Eli Hunt wrote:

But perhaps it is the other way around.

Once you have seen the path, it is impossible to walk another, no
matter how hard you try.

I showed Ariadne my path, and now it has become hers. She is trapped
in the same pattern I succumbed to four years ago.

News from a colleague at the society: Ariadne was caught last night in
my office. From the looks of it, she has been camping out there for
days, perhaps a week. My colleague says she looks like hell. And the
room was no better. Wrecked.

She had moved all of the furniture aside, throw everything into
corners. A 7 circuit labyrinth was painted on the floor. Apparently
she has literally worn the path to shreds, perhaps having traced the
labyrinth as many as thousands of times over the past week.

Ariadne refused to leave the office. She was forcibly carried out. She
would only say: "I made the wrong choice. The other Ariadnes are
happier."

I knew immediately what has happened. Her silence, her homesickness…

I am convinced that she has become consumed with personal labyrinths.
She is immersing herself in memories from her home world – not to save
this world, but to escape it.

Based on this report from my colleague, I fear Ariadne has become
obsessed with the outlier worlds where she did not accept this
mission, where she continues to live an ordinary life, training as an
athlete for the Multiverse Olympiad, competing from her home world
instead of traveling to ours.

I don't know what we can do. But I thought I would prepare you.

When I walked this path, the result was very bad for the worlds I observed.

We have never understood truly why the ancient Greeks banned the
visions at the omphalos.

Perhaps in the act of seeing, there is risk. Perhaps by knowing the
other worlds, we draw ourselves towards them… an attraction that
heightens the possibility of collapse…

We must prepare ourselves for the worse. Even if we can get Ariadne
back to our mission, it may be too late to untangle ourselves from the
worlds she has drawn us closer to.

Regretfully yours,

Eli Hunt

Poor Ariadne... :\

I received exactly the same mail this afternoon.

"When I walked this path ..." - does this imply he has experimented with personal labyrinths as well?

I was wondering where she was all week!

I got the same message from Eli. I don't know if we should trust it. It's all second hand information through a "colleague" and an unnamed one as well. I wish he would give some account of himself, too!

Could that mean that "they" (whoever) do not know of our earth and that "they" and not reality select worlds that will be changed. Than it would make sense that Theo want to avoid synchronisation, if running labyrinths would tell "them" where we are.

This does not sound like Ariadne. I am suspicious. Remember how determined she was when Theo broke into her room and left that threatening note for her? Her blog post was all, "Oh, yes, I just want to go home, waaah"...until you got to the point where she said, "That's what Theo wants me to say, but I am determined to see my mission through." In another recent blog post she said something like, "Don't misunderstand me...I don't just want us to do the synchronizing so I can go home; I really do want first and foremost to save the worlds." (None of these are direct quotes, by the way...I'm too lazy to go look at those posts again at the moment.) For her to suddenly turn around like this and obsess about going home...I don't know. I know we have received news of Diego and Noriko getting visions of family, but I'm not sure we should trust this report of Ariadne's vision and resultant breakdown.

I've been talking with Diego in the last saturday BA labyrinth run. He told me that he think that we have to find out the real objective ot TheO (or Theo or...). Maybe there is another purpose, not just to avoid the multiverse syncro...

BTW, i've received the same email today.

I've just had a reply from Kai about this:

Kai Town wrote:
Hi Laura,

I got a note about that from Tyler on Facebook. It sounds like craziness, but maybe it explains why she hasn't been responding to any of my emails. I was worried that she was mad at me or something, but it sounds like instead she's become totally caught up in this personal labyrinth thing. I think the personal labyrinths are definitely important, and it's been a good way for her to get in touch with her parallel selves, but clearly it's taken her over! I don't know what to do, I can't leave San Francisco right now otherwise I'd go help her out! Let me know if you find anyone in Cardiff, though I'm not sure where she's staying either. I think Mr. Hunt is, unfortunately our best hope at the moment.

Thanks for letting me know! Keep me updated on any other progress!

- Kai

I wrote to Eli last night too, to see if he can tell us where to find her. MrJudkins says he's been in contact with the Cardiff player, so as soon as we get more info maybe we can send them in to check on her!
