Most cheap DVD players can be 'hacked' to be region free. It's usually some obscure system navigation on the settings or a code you enter. The more expensive ones ironically are less likely to have such a region hack. I think the reason is that the cheap ones are sold everywhere and just set to a given region before being packaged for shipment to a given market. This way they basically only make one model, with one set of electronics.

Of course, computers are effectively region free - because between ripping and VOB file playback and region code hacks for computers (which work regardless of hardware) there's basically not a disc you can't watch.

I wonder how many people are actually bothering to order and/or have shipped out of region DVDs? Basically distribution isn't allowed to break region barriers, but end users certainly can. With the aforementioned hacks, there's essentially nothing that can be done to stop a determined person from getting the DVD upon the first region release. The only reason region codes exist is to prevent DVDs from taking away from theater attendance in other markets - but I think only Japan is still playing Cloverfield in theaters.

there are some theaters down here in Brasil that have that 'Cloverfield coming soon' poster still...

I'm thankful I watched it on the theaters, because there isn't a hint as for the DVD release date down here Crying or Very sad

I used a cheap DVD player I bought from a grocery store in New Zealand and it plays everyhting I've played on it including my entire collection of american dvds. My xbox360 on the other hand rejects almost everything that isnt PAL.
