I would go for "Fermi's Golden rule"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Fermi%27s_golden_rule, which looks somehow like the Schroedinger equation.

There's a saying in spanish: La excepcion confirma la regla

In english it would mean... that when you make a rule, if there's an exception, then the rule is there. So, in the comment, they say "I like playing black (in chess), but I'll make an exception here and play white"

EDIT: I have just googled "la excepcion confirma la regla". It comes from latin: exceptio probat regulam in casibus non exceptis
It's a bit hard to translate, as I have just read the saying we use in spanish is wronlgy used, actually. So, it would mean: if there's an exception in a rule, there must be a rule to apply to that exception. Taking from the wiki:
if there's a traffic signal saying "not parking in sundays" (the exception), you can park the rest of the week (the rule)

Even though I am not an english native speaker, I think that the sentence "Exception proves the rule" is nowadays also not used in the original meaning. Similar like the German "Ausnahmen bestätigen die Regeln". Perhaps in many parts of the world the meaning is now to use a counterexample to "proof" a rule (which is not logical).

Even though the original meaning is more logical, I assume the "modern" interpretation is used here, like everyone would use it nowadays.

BTW. That's what I like in args: You learn so many things you would normally not look up somewhere, like the true meaning of this nowadays "stupid" phrase.
