dvd program that can take screenshots...
anyone know of a good one?

i have a really decent animated GIF builder, but i don't know of any decent dvd programs that take screencaps.

i've tried the analogx capture program, but the DVD viewing screen comes up blank. unless i'm a noob, and there's a way to do it in any other program that i'd already have (quicktime, realplayer, wmp, etc.)

i wanna make some gat-dayamn avatars from the film!!

Depending on platform, you can get screenshots various ways. On Windows I know PowerDVD can take screenshots. Last I am aware it makes them into BMPs, which are as fully detailed as the video is rendered to your screen, but very large files. Another flaw is that BMPs being the ultimate bitmapped format tend to be very poor for manipulations like gamma correction. More vector-ish formats which are more friendly to this are JPG and PNG. If you are on a Mac, it can be a little more tricky. You either need to use 3rd party software or use some scripting tricks to make DVD Player or Front Row spit out a screenshot directly. You can 'trick' them into making a screenshot by choosing a frame and making it the 'cover image' for the DVD - which you then have to go dig out of the folder where it's ditched (which I can't recite off the top of my head). I generally go the 3rd party route and use Copernicus on the Mac. I don't do much DVD viewing on Windows, but PowerDVD is usually what I use there.

Print screen is basically very crude, but I suppose it works.

I myself was confused when my print screen did nothing. I used my good 'ol friend Google, and discovered the following.

In order to take screenshots, you must disable Hardware Acceleration. Why you ask? With HA on, the DVD program puts a simple black or pink square where the video should be, and your video card takes the information DIRECTLY from the DVD and puts it into that square, so the video is never directly processed by the computer. This means that when you try and grab a screenshot, all you get is that black / pink square that the computer DID process.

To turn off HA, do the following.
1) Right click on your desktop and hit Properties.
2) Click on the Settings tab.
3) Click on Advanced.
4) Click on the Troubleshoot tab.
5) Slide the Hardware Acceleration slider all the way left and hit accept. Your computer will register the change, and it may not look as pretty afterwards.
6) Now your computer must process the video using the processor, allowing you to take screenshots. The downside to this method is that, if you have a slow computer, it will either cut the resolution down, or simply refuse to play. Whenever you are done, all you need to to is go back to that menu, drag the slider back to wherever it was, and all will be as it was before.

I hope I made this easy enough to understand, and that it helps.

The 'hardware acceleration' being used that causes the blank or black screenshots is called DirectShow. If you disable DirectShow you would force the video to be processed into the same bitmapped form the rest of your screen is normally drawn as, instead of what is basically being blown straight through the frame buffer as DirectShow does. Mind you, for regular viewing purposes DirectShow is far more effecient and smooth.
