[ARG?] The Professor's Journal Kidnap, mystery, history & treasure OK so this is a new game by some guys I've played with in the past (wait that doesn't sound right...) I was really impressed with their puzzle trails in their previous incarnation, and this promises to be good.
It's basically a find the treasure type mystery, such as Masquerade, however there are web based elements, loads of puzzles, and codes to break etc. On top of that there's loads of historical info, which I assume is mainly correct (I'm not sure how much artistic license they've taken).
The basic story so far is Rachel's father, Professor Richlieu, has discovered an ancient secret, which led him to a treasure, however he has now gone missing under suspicious circumstances.
Anyway the website is here: http://www.professorsjournal.com/
There's quite a bit available for free. If you are after the treasure you need to subscribe which gets you a copy of the Professor's Journal, manuscripts, and access to the player's console.

Don't think it'll be dubloons ths time . I'm actually hoping it's a crown
For those who don't know, the previous game by these guys was a weekly puzzle trial, The Da Vndrdi Code. The one I played (and won ) was based on pirates, and I got a dubloon and cash prize, which was cool as there was no entry fee. I guess the fee this time is because the prize is just that wee bit bigger !

I've registered, but where is the bit about a fee? Does that come in an e-mail or am I just being a bit dumb?
Sorry, don't have lot's of time to look at everything right now!
BTW, thanks for the heads-up AP!

Only £24.99 (+ P&P)

You're welcome! It's the closest I've ever come to a trailhead, but then I don't give out my email address that often. I reckon you've plenty of time to catch up, so don't worry about not getting a chance to go through everything just now

Wait...can people who live outside of the U.K. do it?
If so, how much would that entry fee be in USD? (Do I want to know...? )

Well it says this in their TOU:
Quote:
Untopia Limited shall not be responsible or liable for any tax, levies and duties applicable in any country and it is a condition of entry that you shall be responsible for your own tax liabilities in respect of entry or prize
So it would seem from that it isn't limited to Great Britain.
Also, the price to upgrade comes out to $48.24

You've missed at least one thing... keep looking.
I've managed quite a few of the puzzles but there's a few really stumping me.

So how would you categorize this sort of game? I see the topic of this thread still says "[ARG?]", but is this a pay-for-play-ARG crossed with a traditional buy-this-book treasure-hunt? The realms of online and offline entertainment are becoming so blurry these days
(what, no head-scratcher emoticon?)

I was really considering paying until I did the pound to dollar conversion. Then it just became too much for me. I really hope someone does upgrade though because I'm really interested in finding out if it's worth it.

i just can't see paying close to $50 to play a game ONCE and then I might not even like it....
