[SPEC] Answering the GPS question

Sorry - this is kind of a long one.

Ok I know there is already a thread about the GPS coordinates. A long one. So far, it is over 28 pages long. Rather that have this get lost in the jumble, I've started a new thread.

I have been trying to think logically about this GPS puzzle and here is where Occam is pointing me: This is just "us".

Handful and I just got back from a rocking night cruising around Chicago with my GPS checking out the sites and we found the big thing that all of these sites have in common: NOTHING.

The Sears Tower Entrance.
The Sun-Times Building.
A Borders Bookstore.
Across the Street from the same Borders Bookstore. (A sunglasses store)
An intersection with 3 apartment buildings and a convenience store. (I'm not going to mention the fact that one building was boarded up with plywood that had "busy bee boards" printed all over it - Don't want to start more wild spec...oh wait.)

No payphones... An ATM or 2 at some... Maybe a billboard here and there... no cell tower (except on sears i suppose)... not all had wifi (we checked).

So anyway. There are what... 220 locations? Personally, I find it highly doubtful that something has been planted, or something is going to happen at these locations. Why? I doubt the PMs have the manpower to make it happen. And even if they did something, would it make sense in-game? Why would they have 220 actors show up or something when the plot is about an AI trapped in some chicks server? What would they do?

Don't get me wrong... I'd love to be proven wrong about this. I'd like to believe the PMs have a budget of millions of dollars and a staff and cast of hundreds ready to mobilize and make this the biggest ARG ever. But, so far nothing has given me anything close to such an indication.

As far as these places being near libraries and learning centers and such. Yeah, one of the Chicago sites was a bookstore, one was across the street from a book store, one was a newspaper office... but the sears tower? the random corner mart across from the boarded up apartment building? We should be looking for patterns, not jumping on coincidences.

Anyway, this post is getting long. Here is what I think. These are random enough, yet distributed in such a way (i.e. somewhat clingy to population centers) that they are probably simply the coodinates of some of the beekeepers. What if this is simply the product of grabbing the first 220 IPs to hit ILB and then looking up the addresses - then converting them to GPS? (Almost all of these GPS coordinates seem to land on streets - which would support the idea that they started as addresses.)

So sadly, what it seems like to me, is that this is not really so much a PUZZLE (as nothing really so far in this game has been) - as something that is simply meant to show the ominous threat of the queen reaching out and touching all of us.

SO HERE IS WHAT I PROPOSE:

To help confirm or deny this theory... we need to hear from you. HERE is the list of addresses that wishi so generously compiled... I'm pretty sure it is accurate from what I can tell. If any of these addresses point to YOU - (and not just KINDA near you - as these are fairly accurate GPS readings. This has to be exactly where you live or work or where you accesses ILB from.) please post here. Also let us know if you emailed dana or ladybee777. I'm trying to find a pattern and I think this may be it. No need to go crazy drawing silly unicorns if this is just a map of our IPs.

Again, sorry about the incredibly long post. Please post your thoughts.

Humbly yours,
Grout

This is why I'm still leaning towards Wi-Fi. It's doable for the PMs.

This has been mentioned before but not deeply discussed. If this is true there are some people either playing from some awful strange locations or Melissa is wildly off.

Also, there's the meta consideration that if it isn't a puzzle, there isn't anything on the current update remotely worth two weeks of material.

What are some of the strange locations? Honestly I started this thread to be proven wrong. I'm desperately hoping for this thing to turn into an actual GAME.

I know this has probably been pointed out, but I think it might kind of make sense - your spec, that is, Grout.

I mean, when you just think about it, Melissa is saying "AXONS GO HOT" with the countdown and then points to... all of us. The role of an Axon is to carry nerve impulses away from a central place to out where they can take affect (as I understand it). Aren't we the axons of... Melissa? Of the game on a whole?

I mean, I'm not disputing that there could be more behind it all. But at it's simplest, it could be saying "when this countdown goes off, y'all are going to be doing stuff." Rolling Eyes Question *shrugs* But it could still be a puzzle! -hopefully- Honestly, they're too smart to JUST give us this.

Fields in the middle of nowhere seem to count as strange.

Also, the obsessive focus on Sedalia, MO which is strange by any theory that has been posited so far. (And the strongest evidence for the 'it's us' theory would be if someone from there was obssesively writing in. Anyone?)

Also, if 'Axons Go Live' is merely *us* going live, well, erm. It's not terribly inspiring, is it? It doesn't exactly match the definition, either, we aren't neural extensions.

Add: Also, 1. It's not like we aren't active already and 2. This is when she's supposed to spread, isn't it? Metastasis?

Anyhow, brain still wide open. My gut still tells me this isn't just plot fluff, though.

Dont think there is much plot fluff anyways. I am thinking of the Teddy puzzle once again, what if the coordinates are merely giving us letters, suvch as the first names of each city or town, and THAT is the actual code phrase? Everyone is busting heads over the commonality of each location, when what it appears is that the only commonality is the fact that each place is in a city or town or somewheres. Letters?

Solvang, CA
Idora, OH
Long Beach, CA
Louisville, KY
Yazoo,, MI
Los Gatos, CA
Idlewild, PA
Teaticket, MA
Tobacco, KY
Lodi, CA
Eureka, CA
Idiot Creek, OR
Denver, CO
Early, FL
Altoona, PA

okay... getting into the whole axons topic...

here is a definition i found for axons...

Quote:
Axon: A long fiber of a nerve cell (a neuron) that acts somewhat like a fiber-optic cable carrying outgoing (efferent) messages.

so axons aren't points, but lines... and if these coordinates are to be taken as straight-forward locations (which i don't think is the case), then they are all most likely the end-points from san francisco (dana's computer) to where ever they end up.

this might support the first post of this thread, as it would be logical that the operator has invaded people's computers. however, in reality, this just doesn't seem likely. i would assume the PM's would have enough sense to realize that the first emailers might not still be involved.

i'd like to say it would be cool to see the points connected from san francisco, but honestly... what would we get? a bunch of random lines connected to san fran that looks like half a star. doesn't seem like it would solve anything.

and as far as this having something to do w/ the plot... what game-given info hasn't had to do with the plot to this point?

Hi Grout,

I emailed Dana AND ladybee777. emailed ladybee777 about 4 times.

And I live in NewZealand....

so at most it could ONLY be SOME of the people that emailed her from the states, as I'd assume there are a chunk more than 220 people in the US that emailed her / them.

It's a possibility that we should at least play with a little. This comma-delimited text file contains the results of an address matching that Wishi did that provides city, county, zipcode, and state information for each location. I wouldn't put much stock in the addresses, but the other attributes are likely to be correct. This should help aspiring codebreakers try out some different ideas along the lines you've suggested.

Perhaps the each pairing has something in common, like a letter in the city name, that would lead to a string of chracters to be decoded or maybe already in a nice, recognizable order.

Yes, I believe the pairings are important too. Am going to play with 'em later. It seems odd that they would be arranged in pairs for no reason at all and clearly every location doesn't have anything physical in common...

To those who believe we should be using the names of the landmarks at each of these coordinates to assemble some puzzle:

Grout and I visited 5 of these locations last night, all in Chicago.

One, at least, is the front door of a major landmark (the Sears Tower.) Another is very likely the front door of the Chicago Sun-Times, though our GPS unit was flaky at the time. It could have been an IBM office building.

Another is NEAR a landmark, Wrigley field. This is imporant because of the next two points: the entrance of a Borders and a Sunglasses store, literally across little old Clark St. from one another. The PMs picked these locations with resolution enough to pinpoint spots ACROSS THE STREET. Therefore, the previously mentioned location is NOT referring directly to Wrigley Field. If the PMs wanted to indicate Wrigley, they'd have given us third base.

I'll use myself as an example here. Maybe it'll help. I'm a regular here at UF and knew about ilovebees before the Halo trailer was released. I visited the ilovebees site the day the first bottle of honey was discovered. So I guess there's a good chance I'd be in the first 220. I visited the site and I've also emailed ladybee777 and dana. I also sent the link to my husband who accessed it from Green Bay.

The closest dot to me on the map is an hour away in Milwaukee. I even checked to see if maybe my ISP was set up there. Nope. I looked up my IP. You can easily see the town I live in. There's no dot near where my hubbie was either.

It is possible that 220 other posters here at UF beat me to the punch. So I guess the best way to test this theory would be to see if the people who received the honey have a spot marked near them. If not, I'd say it's probably safe to say that the dots are not the first 220 people to visit the ilovebees site. Smile

[abbotandcostello]So, who's the guy on second base?

NO! WHAT's on second, and WHO's on first!

I don't know!

HE'S on THIRD![/abbotandcostello]
