Before the Beast, there was Midnight Madness

An old Disney movie, the very first for Michael J. Fox. It is a college game with teams chasing for clues all around town. In it's own simplistic way, it CAN be seen as a progenitor for the Beast and the ARG as we know it.

Rent or buy the movie if you get a chance. Just a little bit of fun there...

I've never seen this movie, although I may rent it now. An interesting bit of trivia from the IMDB:
Quote:
The movie inspired Joe Belfiore, a high school junior in Clearwater, Florida, to create a similar game. He took the game with him to Stanford University, then ultimately to Microsoft. The Game, as it came to be called, in turn, inspired the movie Game, The (1997).

So, perhaps, this movie was the progenitor of all ARG's.

I did not see The Game as of yet, will have to rent or buy it sometime (half.com, BEST prices in town!).

In Midnight Madness, you had a game master named Leon, and the colloege ones were several teams. Clues were hidden such as a message laid out on the ground that could only be seen from an elevator at the Bonaventure hotel in los angeles, and one that would come up only on beating a videogame with the message coming in after (that is something I can rig up if ever needed Smile

Lazurus, I have seen your handle before,m many years ago. Are you an old Apple 2 type of guy?

Alas, I was never an Apple II type - my tenure at the Fruit Factory was from 1988 to 1997. I tell people that I worked at Apple between Jobs.

Ah. Your handle just struc a super familiar chord all around in there. I think two things got the closest attention, the infamous no mac T shirts I was selling back at Apfest, and the music soundtracks for the GS I was composing all over the place, mainly ultima and castle wolfie. Had to have SOME fun in life Smile

They recently rereleased it on vhs (at least in the US). My sis saw it at a store and bought it for me. She knew how much I loved that movie when HBO used to play it to death back in the mid 80s. It is because of this movie I begged my mom to take me to the mini golf place when we visited LA when I was like 10. She never did, and part of me has always resented her for that. Mad

For those that subscribe to Netflix, they seem they have it in stock. It was certainly a fun movie.

The REAL Midnight Madness!

Ahh...this brings back memories!

The movie is based on a series of real games put on in the 1970's by Don Luskin and myself. (By the way, neither of us resembles "Leon" in any way!)

I've attached the L.A.Times article about the third game, the invitation to the fourth, and one of the clues that was in the form of a religious tract that we handed out on Hollywood Blvd.! Very Happy
