Josh Freese anyone? Or actually any drummer who could pull off "The Perfect Drug" in real life, not Rock Band, without having their arms fall off is just fine.

Guitarist: It makes me sad that John Petrucci isn't getting the respect he deserves around here. Razz

Also, Joe Satriani deserves to be mentioned.

Drummer: two words... Mike Portnoy.

Ya, Petrucci is amazing. But I'm not a huge Dream Theatre fan. Just sorta into 'em now and then. I acually prefer his solo album 'Suspended Animation'. Satriani is insane as well, but again I don't know him thatwell either. have a couple albums i check out now and then. Can't take a lot of prog at once. Gets a little spacey for me.

Dude, yes.

Old In Flames, Muse, Saul Williams. All great. Can't believe Saul was mentioned in this thread.

But I will say I love Bury Your Dead. It's very simple music, but effective. It's total bonehead metal-hardcore, but it's nothing I would call metalcore. All 'grunt' lyrics (a little singing on the new disc, not bad though), very little melody whatsoever, but it's just so crushing. Straight forward heavy with no bullshit filler. They're lows are fucking LOW. They have no misconceptions about what they are (and that's more than I can say about Throwdown).

And ya, metal-core/screamo band names are really getting on my nerves. It's like you have to have an entire sentence as your fucking name now. (The Shades Of Bullet Hearts in the Seas Of Dying Memories) Shit like that. Blows my mind. Just call yourselves 'The (somethings)' if you're having trouble coming up with a name.

And I'd also like them to stop throwing pop culture references in their song titles. It's getting old. On that note, the As I Lay Dying singer has an Arnold Schwarzenegger themed cd coming out with song titles like "It's Not A Tumor". Seriously. That doesn't make the songs any less lame.

Bury your dead is absolutely terrible. All the bands that went the copycat route of hatebreed and terror (throwdown, bury your dead, full blown chaos, et.) are boring as hell. And throwing a breakdown into your song every 20 seconds or so doesn't help.
I'm actually really surprised to hear you say that you like bury your dead but you hate pop culture referenes in the same post. Bury your dead are the kings of that. They have an entire CD whose track names are tom cruise movies for God's sake.

Joey is a great drummer though, despite the Slipknot kids' lack of knowledge. And the Roadrunenr album proves he can do a lot more than that too. Kinda like Dave Grohl mid-90's, everyone's like 'Holy shit, this dude can play guitar and sing too???' haha. Call me gay if you want, but I really like the track Joey wrote for the Glassjaw singer on that album. He easily had the most versitilty of all the 4 songwriters in that project.

Don't get me wrong, i love slipknot. And i think joey is a great drummer. But he's not the best by a longshot. He definitely does have the most versatility. I would've liked to see roadrunner use Adam Dutkiewicz (of kse) instead of heafy. I like heafy, but he's way too inexperienced. Dutkiewicz is THE jack of all trades. The guy can do anything.

I guess you could call Bury Your Dead a gulity pleasure of mine. I don't like most of that stuff (full blown chaos, throwdown), but for some reason I like them. I have a LOT of variety in my collection ranging pretty much every style of music to ever use a guitar, and sometimes I like the dumb shit like that. As for the Tom Cruise movie names, I though it was kinda funny, but I'm glad they didn't continue it. What I meant by pop culture references was bands that take lines from movies and things like that, because the way they do it seems like they're trying to play it out as if they're special for knowing that line or something. I dunno, but when I see song names like 'Shut the Fuck Up Donnie!' and shit like, it starts to grate on me. When I think of better examples and explanation as to why it pisses me off I'll chime back in.

And ya, I could've done without Heafy on that Roadrunner record, especially on the song he sings (Which ain't a bad little alt. metal track, since it's Dino's and just sounds like mellow Fear Factory riffs, but his vocals are nothing special at all. At least he took a quick break from trying to sound like Hetfield. haha) He did add a lot of the more neglected styles of metal to that record, so I give him credit for that much, and very little else.

Great drummer. Great. I forget what band he's in now. That Nails circle of musicians confuses me sometimes. Too many rotations. haha.

Woo-hoo! Quad post!

Final word (and I'm gonna be a bit of a dick about this) Slipknot isn't nu-metal. If you are 15, then you aren't old enough to have an opinion of nu-metal. That style got big around '99, and if my math's right you were 6 yrs old. (That's the part where I'm being a dick)

Both bands are good. I enjoy Slipknot a LOT more than Bury Your Dead though. Bury Your Dead are pretty much a one trick pony. I love the low low breakdown stuff coming from them more than any other band doin that shit, but I can't always make it through a whole album cause it gets REALLY repetitive, even their best stuff. But I can always gt through a Slipnot disc, Especially the first album.

Their first disc is, in my mind, a metal classic. No nu-metal, metal. Second album was up and down, more great than mediocre but still a couple songs had me scratching my head instead of bobbing it. And the 3rd album was an awesome experiment in many forms of metal and rock. I'm really hoping they can just get back to pure heavy for the next album, as some of the last album should've been saved for Stone Sour. But it's all good.

So if I had to take sides, Slipknot, hands down. But I'm not trashing Bury Your Dead like the other dudes around here. I'm still trashing Throwdown. haha.

Agreed 100%. Anyone under the age of 18 isn't allowed to have a valid opinion on nu-metal. That's like me smack-talking hair metal...i wasn't around when it was in its prime, so who am i to talk shit on a genre that i didn't get to experience firsthand?
As for bury your dead, please tell me what is good about them. Absolutely shitty lyrics, 3 power chords per song, 27 awful breakdowns within their 2 minute songs, and a homoerotic fetish for tom cruise? No thanks. Not to mention their live show, which is worse than hilary duff's. Take any one member of slipknot and i guarantee you, hands down, they can play circles around any member of bury your dead. Especially corey (the singer), joey (the drummer), or paul (the bassist).
I would much rather listen to hatebreed if i'm going to go for steak and potatoes metal...at least they know what they're doing.

That doesn't mean it's nu-metal. That's a gimmick. Limp Bizkit don't bang on trash cans, and they ARE nu-metal. Slipknot would never do the 'Rollin' dance either. hahah

Oh I get why some people wouldn't like them. The Tom Cruise song names didn't strike me as gay at all, just a joke. I thought it was funny that my favourite song on that album was named after one of his much gayer movies. And don't let me know how you've seen Hillary Duff live. haha. But yeah, the sound at the show I saw BYD at was fuckin' awful. I don't know if they're that bad all the time, but it was not good. The other opening bands didn't have a hard time with the sound. Though i can just imagine BYD came out after their guitar techs, turned the volume up to 11, smashed Mountain Dew cans on their heads and yelled "EXTREME" right before the set. hahaha

which...slipknot..has..
so..
duh.
and bury your dead is just awesome.
i listened to slipknot a while back.
but looking back its just stupid.

To be comlpetely honest, Bury Your Dead sound more like nu-metal more often than Slipknot do. The bouncy-type riffs, etc. The singer may not exactly be rapping but if you've seen any of their videos he sure bobs around like he is. haha. And they only know about 3 notes, which I'll be the first to say is fun sometimes, but you've GOTTA know Slipknot are way more creative and talented.

I will say that Slipknot definitely straddle the line of nu-metal, or they used to anyways. Absolutely nothing on their third cd is nu-metal at all. They cut the rapping, and the DJ's hardly heard from on that whole record. Maybe some samples, but he definitely cut down on the scratching.

I just can't see why you find them stupid but not Bury Your Dead. Is it an image thing? The gimmick of 9 guys with masks might be a bit much for some, but I couldn't give a fuck if they were wearing tu-tu's on stage, if the music's good, fuck the image.

So you don't like ANYTHING of theirs? Not even the first album? The singer is great at both singing and screaming, the guitarists are creative and very skilled, the drummer is a fucking monster. And all that extra percussion sounds great sometimes. I dunno, I'm still into 'em, and I won't be shamed into tossing their cd's just because they have a running gimmick. (I saw the new masks in Revolver, Jesus! They're wearing giant aztec stone heads now. hahahah)

Thank you for giving a well thought out answer on why bury your dead is good and slipknot isn't. NAWT.
Shouldn't expected much from someone who has hardly reached puberty...

I would def say that their earlier stuff is nu-metal, but nothing on vol. 3 is. I've never heard anyone over 18 or so like nu-metal, because they of all the shit the genre got due to bands like limp dickspit and papa roach. The thing is...metalcore is getting more and more universally reviled than nu-metal ever was.
I'm surprised skatehimrock doesn't absolutely LOVE slipknot...the band that raises his dick (suicide silence) is absolutely obsessed with them, and is doing a tour with them this summer. Surprised the band-wagon jumper wouldn't jock em as well.
