[City Labyrinth] Wellington, NZ Completed 21st June 2008 (GMT +12) Hello all =)
Wellington are really excited to be a part of the Giant Labyrinth mission, and if anyone has suggestions for our labyrinth designs we'd love to hear them!
It's quite a difficult city, due to its small size, hills and harbour. What is possible is this 3-Circuit Labyrinth , just larger than the 3 stadia minimum. The bonus with this design is that it does a pretty comprehensive tour of Wellington's inner-city, is fairly symmetrical and classic in its labyrinth shape (exactly the same as what we've been practicing the Lost Sport on). This one will be great - but can anyone see a potential design that will be better?

Wellington really does look difficult. I like your design, but I guess the start could be a little more centered. Is it possible to make the lower left loop a bit wider?

Wow, the street layout of parts of Wellington look already like a fantastic design for a maze but unfortunately a maze isn't a labyrinth

Thanks for the feedback, Canzonett - I've adjusted it somewhat... is that better ?

Indeed! We're just lucky the inner city is grid-based enough to make a minimum size 3-Circuit!

Much better! Looks really well-balanced now. You might consider starting from Cuba or Marion Street to give it a little extra twist in the centre, although that would disturb the carefully balanced distance between the different lines ...

Received a reply from Eli this morning:

This labyrinth does indeed appear to meet the criteria for a successful ompha-labyrinth.
I would encourage your team, after you successfully complete this 3-circuit labyrinth, to try another city-scale labyrinth elsewhere in the city, or perhaps pass on your trackstick to another team in New Zealand who could amplify your labyrinth signal with a secondary labyrinth. As far as I know, more knots equals more strength.
Sincerely yours,
Eli Hunt
So we're on - and I'll start checking out Google Maps of other, much more appropriately gridded cities in New Zealand...

We're planning on creating the Wellington Omphalabyrinth this weekend, during the Solstice (GMT - Sunday our time).
As it will only have a Omph Strength of 3.35, we're planning on doing a Secondary Labyrinth in Hastings in another couple of weeks - if Eli gives it the go ahead. It's about a 4-hour drive each way for us, so we'd like to do the best labyrinth there that we possibly can. This current design has an omph strength of 9.37.
Any feedback on how we can improve it would be much appreciated!

The only alternative I could think about would be to include that huge green area marked "Town Belt" on Google Maps in your plans. Would it be possible to cross that thing, not just on the marked paths, but even outside them? It looks rather steep ...

Completed!
I've finally managed to get to a PC computer and get the data off the Trackstick - and here are the results:
Wellington Omphalabyrinth.kmz (Now a direct link!)
There are a couple of places there that the tracking went a bit off (pretty obvious jags out to the side) but it's pretty good on the whole.
It took us 2 1/2 hours to walk, as a group of eight. I'm working on the video at the moment, which is effectively a sped-up 15 minute Omphalabyrinth "Tour" of Wellington City. Unfortunately we're having stability problems with our home compy, so I'm not 100% sure when I'll be able to get it uploaded.
In the meantime, here is a pic of what we were up to 5 minutes after finishing the epic morning constitutional...

Congratulations! Have you already taken a look at the omphaputer? Our omphalos net is looking better and better.

That beer looks goooooood.
I finally got a look at the kmz file. It looks great! Congratulations on an awesome six mile omphawalk!
