What have we got here?
Can you tell me what this looks like from where you are?

Hi, I've come here in the hope that you guys might be able to shed some light on a project I'm involved in.

I'd like to ask some specific questions in a little while but, before I start setting an agenda with those and influencing your responses, I'd really appreciate it if you could spare some time to give me some feedback on how this looks from an ARG point of view.

Right, I'm off to look around the board and learn some stuff – meet you back here in a bit...

Since at first impression this reminds me strongly of SF0, I'm going to steal their term for it and refer to this as a "Collaborative Production Game"

That is what you were asking for, right? Some generalization of how this project would be categorized?

mmmm, I think that's a label I could happily live with.

The "Collaborative Production" bit anyway - it's the question about whether this is a game that's brought me here!

What is a game?
(...leading on to "what's a good game - but I've read some insightful threads on that elsewhere so maybe this isn't the place for that)

Actually, I came across SF0 early on in this project, also recognised the similarities (and the potential for 'stealing') and for that reason decided to not investigate it too much to try and reduce the chances of blatant copying. So forgive me if these next questions seem like I'm being really lazy with my research - it's just that I'm trying not to plagiarise too much SF0 content goodness!

What is it about SF0 that makes it a game? (and would you describe it as an ARG?)

There's a points-based ranking system, isn't there? Would you say that's a driving force for continued involvement?

With our project one of our aims is perhaps Collaborative Creativity (I'm an artist rather than a gamer or, y'know, an *actual* pm or anything!). There's definitely a strong element of play, but I'm not sure if we could be described as a game.

I'm wondering if we need to introduce a goal of some sort, or whether it's valid to just play for the sake of playing? What do you think?

We're in pre-game territory at the moment and trying out different things to see how people react to them. We tried to introduce points as part of the last activity, but for various reasons that element of it all sort of fell apart...

Yes, and then if it looks like it's recognisable as a game format, would it be something that looks interesting to take part in, or is it coming across as being too undefined? [that's the agenda I referred to initially]

Some people play games for the sake of the play. Being the "winner" with no tangible benefits (ala Jane McGonigal's Cruel 2B Kind) is fun but so is just partaking.

SF0 players I think like the recognition and sense of accomplishment. The points is just a measurement of participation.

Both of these would probably be a classified more like Collective Play, not really an "ARG".

Some people play for the prizes. Not sure how much they 'enjoy' the activity - some do, and some just going through the motions to get to the end as quickly (or as much) as possible because they are goal oriented for the reward.

Most traditional old-style ARGs have been play for the entertainment, with the reward being the sense of accomplishment (you know, saving the girl, the computer being, the world, that sort of thing). Some of the marketing ARGs have had rewards at the end (I still have my $4 from Saving My Husband).

As for what is an "ARG" vs "Chaotic Fiction" and everything inbetween and around that. There are some great threads in the META forum (and Spacebass' article from early last year in unfiction.com).

WOW!

Hey, thanks konamouse!

I've yet to digest everything, but exploring some of the things you referenced and terms you used has just given me a whole new vocabulary to describe what's going on in our project!

Smile

Another term that might apply (and would definitely be worth looking into) is Big Games -- your first task seems to be tending towards that idea, anyway.

(Link was to area/code's Big Games Manifesto)
