Someone with a lot of time could reverse engineer the code. It cant be THAT complicated, since the program is relatively small, but it'd still take a ton of time. Or maybe we could convince BlueGenics to make it open source? Smile I'd assume that since we need the keys, there would be no secrets in the code. We'd still need a Mac developer probably.

Well hopefully most of the game will be web based or open source so us mac people can play along. Otherwise I guess we'll just have to sit back and wait for the windows people to do all the work Cool

Well, I thought I'd ask. I got a response almost right away!

Quote:

The BlueGenics Encryptor was written entirely using the Microsoft .NET Framework v2.0, and as such is not natively portable to the Mac environment. The encryption keys and files are serialized in such a way that they can only be read through the Framework.

We have acknowledged the interest of non-Windows users to use such a product, and in future versions will attempt to address the matter.

Thank you for your interest.

BlueGenics Customer Support

Well, C# 2.0 may actually make things easier. With Mono it may be possible to run it somehow. I'm not sure though, and I don't have access to a Mac. But failing that, it's easy enough to rip the source out of the code using Reflector. If we can isolate the algorithms it may be possible to whip something together in Python or something. The "serialization" thing will be a problem though - basically thats how programs convert stuff in memory to/from files.

Now I've got my gears turning. This isnt what I wanted to think about today! Smile

To decrypt the Overseer image you need to choose the

As far as we can tell, everything that can be done, has. It took all of 5 minutes in the IRC channel to have it all done. (Note to PM if he's reading this: This is not a request to make things harder Very Happy )

See the Umbrati thread for what we got out of it.

All I know is that I've spent most of the day getting caught up on all this in my XP install on Parallels Desktop on my Mac. Something went haywire with .NET 2.x and I had to manually uninstall and then reinstall all of the .NET versions on my system to get the program to work.

Anyway, let me know what Mac hardware and OS you're running and I'll see what virtualization software I can find to allow you to run a Windows OS for free or cheap. I recommend Parallels Desktop, but not everyone has the $79.99 for this software.

I have an older version of parallels but not on my laptop which is all I have access to right now. I tried out the demo of Crossover last month and actually liked it a LOT better. Especially the how you don't need to procure a copy of Windows and install it after you already buy the software part Very Happy But I can't really afford to buy it right now.

I'm on a Macbook running OSX 10.5.3 w/ a 2GHz Intel processor and 1GB of ram. Thanks for the offer! Let me know if you find anything!

This is the story of my life. I just have bootcamp and haven't put Windows on only cause I don't have access to a free copy.

Try this: Sun xVM VirtualBox 1.6

While I've seen some notes at macwindows.com that says there are some problems with previous releases on Leopard, I'm going to download this myself and see if I can get a halfway decent Windows 98 install working, as Parallels is ridiculously slow on anything other than XP, Vista, and some flavors of Linux.

If you don't want to go ahead and get this yourself, I'll let you know how it goes on my system (which is the same configuration as yours, but with 2 GB of RAM).

I had a copy of XP sitting around from my last desktop crash (which was part of the reason I went to a Mac in the first place. Unfortunately, BootCamp only supports XP, otherwise you could run something fun like Linux. Wink

If VirtualBox works, then you might be able to find a copy of Windows 98 fairly cheap at a second-hand/independent computer store. Windows XP is not going end-of-life this year, because Microsoft has partnered with the "One Laptop Per Child" initiative, so there will be no cheap copies of it around for a while.

Re: Off-topic: Windows Emulation on Mac

Here's the link for CrossOver Mac. I would def get it if I had the $$.

It has a free trial... I've just used it up already. I'd recommend you give it a shot if you haven't.

Been there, done that. I wasn't really impressed, myself, but that was back in September '06. I needed something more complete at the time.

BTW, looks like xVM VirtualBox 1.6 works pretty well, but it only does a basic Win98 install, and gives no drivers other than networking. I'll try a Win2K or XP install tomorrow and see how those work and let y'all know.

Oh, and faeryqueen21, something I didn't think of before -- do you know anyone who upgraded from XP to Vista? If so, then you can use their XP license, as the Vista license will supercede the XP one.

Good night, y'all.

For you guys running on a Mac, I'd recommend VMWare Fusion. Works like a charm, plus you can get the v2 beta free: http://www.vmware.com/landing_pages/fusion2_beta.html

You know, my parents may have upgraded. I'll have to check with them.

Redct, I've noticed that you and Big Larry always have answers for my Mac problems, so do you think you could fly here and fix my internet connection as well? Wink
