The Strangers
Not really a game but...

The website details that something happened to the Hoyt family in their vacation home at 1801 Clark Road on February 11, 2005. I tried finding these events but there's no record of any family named Hoyt having been murdered or that have dissapeared. Legally speaking they may have changed the name and address but I cant find anyhting on the date. Has anyone heard of an event, somewhat, like this happening.

page title: THE STRANGERS :: OFFICIAL SITE :: IN THEATERS MAY 30th

meta keywords: The Strangers, Liv Tyler, Scott Speedman, Universal Pictures, Rogue Pictures, home invasion, horror, thriller, suspense, murder, torture, violence, terror, film, engagement, wedding, proposal, proposal gone wrong, romance, romantic, vacation home, mask, axe, rifle, gun, knife, survival, true story, based on true events, Bryan Bertino, Funny Games

meta description: Lock the door. Pretend you're safe. The brutal events that took place in the Hoyt family's vacation home on the night of February 11, 2005 are still not entirely known… Champagne. Rose petals. Candlelight. It was supposed to be a night of celebration for Kristen McKay (Liv Tyler) and James Hoyt (Scott Speedman) at his family's secluded vacation home. But after leaving a friend's wedding reception and returning to the house, everything had changed for Kristen and James. And then came the knock at the front door. Is Tamara at home? Writer/director Bryan Bertino explores our most universal—and human—fears in The Strangers, a horrifying suspense thriller about a couple who are targeted by three dangerous masked strangers. The resulting clashes force Kristen and James to go well beyond what they thought themselves capable of in order to survive.

IMDB entry for "The Strangers" release date 30 May 2008

(I guess you were looking for the truth behind "based on true events", not whether or not there is a game behind the movie. Chances are that the family name was indeed changed, even the town.)

edit: adding link to this interview with the director. He is asked, "Where did this story come from for you? Were you inspired by a true account in particular?" but doesn't directly answer the question. I see other articles online, and they all emphasize that it was "based on" and "inspired by" true events.

It seems to be the widely accepted theory that it's an allusion to the Charles Manson killings. This is apparently strewn throughout the theatrical trailer; the only instance I can remember someone mentioning was Liv Tyler's crawl through the yard, which apparently actually happened in one of the Manson incidents.

"The Strangers" - Movie
What the writer/director said

'Truth' open to interpretation
But what, exactly, is a "true" event to a film studio? And what does it mean when a movie sells itself as having been "inspired" by one?

That really depends, said Adam Fogelson, Universal Pictures president of marketing.

"I can only say that there is absolutely a distinction between 'based on' and 'inspired by,'" he explains. "'Based on' means there are specific events that are being used as the basis for the story. 'Inspired by,' well, that's a much looser definition."

Looser, indeed: In the production notes for "The Strangers," the film's writer-director Bryan Bertino explains just what "true events" the film is based on:

"That part of the story came to me from a childhood memory. As a kid, I lived in a house on a street in the middle of nowhere. One night, while our parents were out, somebody knocked on the front door and my little sister answered it. At the door were some people asking for somebody that didn't live there. We later found out that these people were knocking on doors in the area and, if no one was home, breaking into the houses. In 'The Strangers,' the fact that someone is at home does not deter the people who've knocked on the front door; it's the reverse."

So the "true" event is a decades-old childhood memory of an almost-burglary that didn't actually happen?

There's a thread for this in the Timewasters thread, but no one seemed to interested there. But yeah, just some over-hyped movie.

Truth behind The Strangers

3 elements to the truth behind The Strangers: 1. Inspired by director Bryan Bertino's childhood when a stranger stopped by his home asking for some one who did not live there and later several empty homes in the neighborhood were burglarized. 2. The Manson murders 3. The murders that took place in Cabin #28 at Keddie Resort, in the remote township of Keddie, CA, where three people were found tied up, stabbed, bludgeoned by a hammer. (A fourth victim who'd been at the site was found some months later, the body dumped 90 miles away). 2005 has nothing to do with the storyline. There you have it. Mystery solved. Hardy Boys and Nancy Drew have nothing on Sampson.

 The Strangers
my review

Real or not, this movie scared the SH_T out of me! I LOVED IT!!! And I don't normally go to movies like this at all. However he came up with the story, (may it be childhood memories, true stories, etc) kept me on the edge of my seat the whole time. BRAVO!!!!!

It was inspired by the director when he was a child and all the houses in his neigbourhood got robed, and sombody was about to rob his house but he was at home so they didn't, they asked for some random person at the door to check if anybody was home

this movie was terrible it was not scary if anything i thoght it was a little amusing as to how stupid they make people in these movies if someone is sneaking up on you you go to a corner and push your back against the wall you dont run into the woods im sorry but i didnt think this movie was the least bit scary or possibly truthful. If the full events are unkown than how could they base a storyline like that honestly
