[EMAIL] Latest emails sent by us

I sent a pair of emails to our two favorite ladies today, words of encouragement and warning for Dana:

I am concerned for your safety. It seems someone named 'Melissa' has an unusual fascination with you, and may seek to do you harm. Another entity however, likes you and thinks you are 'cuddly like the cat'. Just...be careful.

Oh, and listen to the sound clip found at the legend of Comatas. Many of us find it unusually creepy.

***
I sent Ladybee a song because it amused me to do so, and I'm a HUGE Heavy Metal fan:

I'm kneeling in front of the altar
Satan's cross upon the wall
Strange emptiness, a crystal ball between two candles
Melissa has entered another life

Melissa, you were mine
Melissa, you were the light

She was a witch
Why did they take you away?

Melissa, you were the queen of the night
Melissa, you were my light
I swear revenge on the priest
The priest must die
He must die in the name of Hell

Melissa, can you hear me?
Melissa, are you there?

Nothing is left outside at the stake

***

The puzzles were all beyond me so I figured I'd amuse myself by emailing fictional people. My life is so Sad

-Marc

I sent one out to ladybee777, I did a google for mayday and silence and came up with a couple of interesting pages:
http://www.nationmaster.com/encyclopedia/Mayday
Quote:
Silence
The following calls may be made only by the coastguard or the vessel in distress: Seelonce Mayday or Seelonce Distress mean that the channel may only be used by the vessel in distress and the coastguard (and any other vessels they ask for assistance in handling the emergency). The channel may not be used for normal working traffic until 'seelonce feenee' is broadcast.

The expressions Stop Transmitting - Distress and Stop Transmitting - Mayday are the aeronautical equivalents of Seelonce Mayday.

http://www.sailonline.com/seamanship/coastie/distress.html
Quote:
The next series of questions are called "amplifying information": boat description; any medical emergencies onboard; "on-scene weather"; what emergency supplies are on board; is there: a life raft, EPIRP, flares, lifejackets, food and water. Any of the amplifying information could change the way the CG approach the SAR (Search and Rescue).

The repetition on the about page reminds me of how one can amplify a gene, by making more copies of it. Maybe Melissa or the Princess is trying to amplify her information?

So I sent this today (Aug 11)

* MAYDAY MAYDAY MAYDAY

Melissa, we have heard and relayed your mayday. We understand you are in distress. We understand you have difficulty with voicing the problem. Please use this channel of communication as it is "Seelonce Mayday" - reserved for your search and rescue.

Please amplify your information. We will attempt to send a rescue basket.

Here is an email I sent to ladybee777/Sleeping Princess today:

"Hello.

You are not alone anymore. As you know; many of us have been reading what you have written and think about it and you often.

I am glad that you are enjoying our literature and culture. There are many works that make us fascinating and unique. Some of us have begun to send you new stories. I hope that you enjoy them too.

But all of this; our culture, Dana and the friends that you have made, might be destroyed if the Flea is allowed to continue leading the Queen. The Flea is not a friend of ours. It's friends and parents want to destroy us all and will if they learn our location. We do not have a way to defend ourselves from the Flea's parents.

I can understand why you are staying out of the Queen's way right now. I think that is a good idea. In her state of mind there is no telling what she might do, especially with the Flea whispering in her ear. We do not want you to get hurt!

But is there something that you might be able to do to save us without revealing yourself? Could the Widow be revived to attack the Flea, maybe at a critical moment when the Flea is distracted? Again, please do not do anything that would get yourself hurt! We care. You are important. Simply keeping us informed about what is going on is really very good. Thank you.

Stay well,
Revealer"

I don't know what kind of reaction it will get or even if it was wise, but it seemed like a good idea at the time.

Whilst trying to not derail this thread, I just wonder how we know that the flea is evil? I know that this has been debated and unsolved, but for that very reason I don't think we're going to get anywhere by emailing assumptions. Anyway, I know you can't screw up the game or anything by emailing, so why not? I'm not trying to come down on you or anything, I just wondered about your assumption that the Flea is evil...

I suspect it's based on widespread SPEC that the Pious Flea is really Covenant AI. In the Haloverse, Covenant = evil.

Shad0, I know literally where the idea flea=evil comes from... I'm simply stating that this is spec based on spec. That's the kind that always could be correct, but more by chance than any true deductive skill. I mean, for a long time we thought the flea was as much an ally as the Princess (who we still don't know to be well-intentioned either, BTW...) I'm just taking the devil's advocate position by arguing we should textually evidence or back up spec. Not that it makes this line of spec less valid, just saying I don't buy into spec until I've seen something that tells me that there's it's got a basis in the game. So far, all I've seen the flea do is kill off SPDR, which no one was rooting for (from what I've seen), as well as be described by the SP as a nasty little infestation (when she didn't have a grasp of English yet, mind you)... so that nasty little infestation part could have just referenced the point that the flea could just have been an outsider, not necessarily bad or good... Anyway, like I said... just playing Devil's Advocate to get discussion going. carry on... Cool

You're absolutely right, Dorkmaster. It has not been proven yet that the Flea is Covenant, but I believe the evidence is very strong. I won't list it here or we'll really get off topic. Maybe when I get some time I'll compile all the references and put them on the Wiki.

I could have modified my statement to the Princess that "if the Flea is a Covenant AI like I suspect..." but I didn't. Oh well.

By the way, I don't think the Flea is evil. It's just doing what it was designed to do. I don't even think the Covenant are evil, but they do have it in for us and out of self preservation they must be stopped.

Emailing or sending assumptions to the characters might not get us anywhere, or it may spur a lot of activity on their part. That was my intent in the first place, to get some kind of reaction.

Also, I believe that if we wait until something is "proven" before acting on it we'd be pretty bored and just sitting around waiting for the PMs to hand us the answers. (Gee, that feels kind of familiar Rolling Eyes ) I think that at some point we have to run with what we have until it is either supported or shown to be a dead end.

Oh, and if you were worried that my "wise" comment meant that I was concerned the email might do some damage; I wasn't. It was just an attempt to stay in the spirit of the game by being "afraid" of repercussions. Too subtle? Wink

And you don't have to worry about bashing or hurting my feelings. I'm not that fragile. I do have a lot of respect for your opinions and the hard work you've put into this and always welcome your thoughts.

Interview Questions

Ok, you know that list of lame e-mail interview questions, that you're supposed to send all your friends to learn more about them?
We used one of these to send to characters during LockJaw, and had a lot of fun with it (so did the PMs, as I recall). I'm thinking about sending one to our Sleeping Princess (and maybe one to Dana as well)
Here's a copy of the one we used during LockJaw:
Code:

(1) What's your full name?  Including any embarassing middle names!

(2) What's your Movie Star Name?  For those with deprived childhoods,
you combine the name of your street and your mother's maiden name.
I'm "Smith Broadway", for instance.

(3) What's your Nickname?

(4) Sex?  Answers of "Yes, please" will be greeting with a severe
beating.

(5) What's your sign, baby?

(6) When's your next birthday?

(7) How old will you be then?

(8) What color are your eyes?

(9) Red?  That's revolting!  You must not have many friends, right?
Oh... wait... sorry, I thought I was someone else for a second.
Don't answer that.

(10) Do you own any pets?

(11) If so, what are their names?

(12) Do you own a car?

(13) If so, what is its name?

(14) Oh c'mon, you didn't name your car?  What's wrong with you?

(15) Oh, I see.  Sorry, I didn't know.  What make is your anonymous
car, then?

(16) What do you do for a living?

(17) What do you do for fun?

(18) Where did you go to highschool?

(19) Where did you go to college?

(20) What did you major in there?  Binge drinking emphatically does
not count.

(21) What's your favorite sports team?

(22) Do you have a brother?

(23) Do you have a sister?

(24) Do you like your sister?

(25) Do you think she's smarter than me? Isn't that right about your
sister? She's smarter tha- dammit, I did it again!  Never mind that
one.

(26) Who's your best friend?

(27) Who's your significant other?

(28) Who's your 'significant other'?  For the less fortunate amongst
us, who's your crush?

(29) Just two more.  What's your lucky number?

(30) Finally, what's your special word?  What's your favorite word in
the whole wide world?

Here's my first-ever interaction with an ARG. I know it's not very creative, but I'll get better over time. Smile

Subj: A question or so of my own...

To the point...

-How often may we have one of our voted on questions answered?

-Are you content for now to be locked away?

and

-Do you know what the Operator is planning to accomplish with the axon connections? (I don't need to know, I just want to know if YOU know.)

Thank you (may I call you friend?)
Jay

Any advice for communicating with this thing would be nice. Smile

You should have put one of the names in your subject to vote GloryFish, unless you sent that in another e-mail. I voted for the question to find out who the Pious Flea was. I sent my own questions to her, but being the idiot I am, I forgot to copy them. Ah well, if she uses them, you'll see them. Onto your questions. They sound like good questions, but the axon thing may be over or solved by the time SP (one of my questions was asking who she really was) answers more questions. But go ahead and ask whatever questions you want, no harm, no foul.

Hello, Princess. How are you today? I have some questions for you. I hope you like them.

If you had a bee for a body, what kind of bee would you be? How would it make you feel? What would you do?

I am just as excited about this as you are! I can't wait until August 24.

--Kevin C.

I figured we could glean a lot more information from open-ended questions than specific ones, and they give her the freedom to answer as little or as much as she wants. Plus, even a barebones answer to these questions will help us determine her motives, her intentions and her relationship to the Queen. It would also tell us a lot about her attitude towards authority, which could come in handy if the current power structure between the Queen, the Flea, and the SP shifts or collapses.
