faint background marks/scratches

Yes, I also noticed the vertical scratches/marks that Blackfeathers mentioned. I think it looks like they line up for "999,999" and "1,000,000" but the following ones do not. "Head Down" and "Corona Radiata" (that's the circle with the swirly lines coming out, right?) appear to have the same marks, but not the same as the others. Meh?

Off topic, kinda, sorry!

I'm terribly sorry, but this is not really on topic. On topic to The Slip, but not to figuring stuff out.
I'm listening to The Slip of course, and I'm on Discipline. And...the beat lines up totally to Jabba's avatar. I CAN'T LOOK AWAY. Ok, yeah, sorry. But it really does line up to Tim Curry dancing.... oh dear.

scratches + off-topic nin song-related

if you look more closely on those light scratch/distress marks, there are in fact a few pairs that do line up/match with each other.

in these 3 or so pairs of matching artwork scratches, some match in certain areas. it's not quite a 100% match.

perhaps inverting or flipping them around would match another one to make a pair?

i'm not sure if the artist who made them was just getting lazy and re-using the scratches, or if it's something significant to them. it's still open for speculation.

[off topic]
in the off-topic mention about beats, it's been noted before at ets that 'ghosts 38' and 'demon seed' both have the same drum beat. check it out.

if you haven't heard about ghosts 37 and 38, you'll be happily surprised there's yet more free songs by nin. they're found in the multi-track disc and also for download with links found @ ets and other places on the 'net. Smile

Well if this does start with a tour shirt, I will be attending the Toronto gig on August 5th, and will be on the look out for anything.

I don't think it will be a t-shirt, for the record, that's already been done. If the concept of YZ was to urge people to think and be more creative, I highly doubt that they/he would use the same cues as before to get things rolling. I'd just keep my eyes open. If this is to be a sequel to YZ, people will be more aware of it, and hiding things in hard to find place is now possible; I'd think.

Scratches + Off topic stuff

On the scratches... I dunno about the "being lazy" bit. I think if that were true, they would all match up, not just two and two ...meh? Just a thought. I am not so good with the photo manipulation, but I am trying. Will let you all know if I find anything, obviously!!

On the off topic bit... someone totally needs to do another fake music video for Discipline (everyone saw the first one, right?). This one should just be Frankenfurter dancing...maybe a few other scenes from Rocky Horror...just think the ideas of the movie and the song go together too well, ROFL!

In case anyone did miss the first vid, here you go: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I1ZMKfFHU3U

just clarifying by speculating about the artist being 'lazy' with the scratches, i meant the creator(s) of the album artwork -not anyone here. Smile

i was also speculating on its creation: that he/she re-used the scratches from a previous work versus creating them from scratch or re-positioning them each time.

or it could be considered thematic, not lazy -despite some aligning together. who knows.

they kinda remind me of hardwood floors though.

"niin"?; and "Head Down," track 6, 2:48ish

Hey all, been lurking for a bit, and planning on the Cleveland show on 8-22.

Here's the thing: I entered ARGville after YZ was in full swing, and my love for NIN is deep but falls short of fanatic levels, SO I have a quick question: On page 14 of the PDF is the following text:

"label: the null corporation
(c) 2008 niin"

What's up with the extra 'i' in "niin"? I gather the Null Corporation replaces Nothing, but I couldn't make sense of "niin." Typo seems unlikely. My own ignorance? Probably.

The only interesting thing googling turned up was this, the national item identification numbering system. It seems fitting, but I have no idea how it could work toward a solve.

-also-

I have absolutely no ability to parse sound files, if that ability exists, but there seems to be something odd in Head Down. It seems like an obscured voice, a bit different than the rest of the vocals and vocal effects on the track. Or maybe not. Give a listen and see what you think. It's at 2:48ish.

edited: A better link explaining that national id number system: wikileaks. And here is a catalog where you can look stuff up using NIINs. It turns out to be some sort of international military system--not the sort of thing that could be feigned for the sake of a game. But window shopping there is still kind of a hoot.

Just trying to make sense

The artwork does depict somehow a connectivity between images. What if it is related as to the order you have to hear the music?

There are several songs that end abruptly, and even then, the silence is not empty (spectral analysis on audacity shows some spots of info there).

This is more patent when hearing 7. Lights in the Sky, which ends abruptly but continues on 8. Corona Radiata... Could the other abrupt ends also lineup with other songs?

The scratches... At first i thought they were there because of the material used for printing plus pressure from the press... Then remembered this is digital material, so they could be there for a reason... like helping us line up.

The image most recurrent is the square.

The image with red scratches could be read 170* (where * could be an eight?)

Trent encourages us to remix this work... That could mean more clues are on the remix.nin.com site, maybe hidden in the multitracks? (There you will find as of may 07: 1,000,000 , Corona Radiata, Demon Seed, Discipline, Echoplex, Head Down, Letting You, Lights in the Sky, The Four of us are Dying, which means that 999,999 is not there, at least as of yet).
No mistery on why the files are listed as 1MB, they are torrent files...

The niin must be a clue... or it could be a slip.

Also, there must be a key in the rhythm... Every piece except 999,999, Lights in the Sky and Corona Radiata begin with drums.

By the way... given the artwork involved in 999,999... has anybody tried hearing this backwards? I mean the whole album... just in case... because those 999 do seem a bit like 666.

I might be overthinking stuff here... but, boy, sure this is fun!

Thoughts on the argishness (I made up a word!)

Thoughts.

I think that this WILL be an ARG. I don't think it is one, YET. Here is my reasoning:

1. Stuff in/with The Slip
A lot of the lyrics of the songs seem to be at the very least, in line with the whole Year Zero concept(s). Further, The Slip could also be seen as a concept album, as many of the songs seem to flow together, tell a story. What that story is yet, of course we are not sure. Lastly, the freaking CD booklet pdf thing. That's too strange. It just screams puzzle. I just think we don't have the key to it yet.

2. Reasoning/Politics/Activism
Year Zero got a lot of people thinking, paying attention the news, asking questions, writing their congresscritters, etc etc. A large concept of Year Zero was needing to pay attention, wake up, and care about what is happening politcally and not what is happening on American Idol (OMG!). There is a lot of political stuff going on. People need to pay attention to the candidates and the news to make an educated decison, rather than just listening to what they are told by [insert media sound byte here], or worse, an email chain letter going around with blatantly false information.

NIN/Trent Reznor/The YZ ARG/AIR never told us what to think- only that we shouldthink. Since the elections are coming up in the future, this is a good time to bring up that idea again. A lot of people got interested with the ARG. And while I hope that some of them kept on the track of activism, or at least paying attention to their world, I'm sure some of them fell off the wagon. So why not try to wake people up again?

I think that the online release of The Slip is a teaser. Something to get us interested. And when the physical CD ships, or the concerts start, or, I don't know, a random date Trent picked occurs, we'll get a key. Something will happen.

(Side note: wouldn't it be hilarious if NIN fans were the swing vote? I think I would pay money to hear that on the news.)

Sounds like an awesome tour. Crystal Castles and NIN? Rad.

Back cover says "Seed Five". Does that mean anything to anyone?
