It's a bit weird, because I've agreed to keep a diary, but everything that happened did so before I got the notebook, etc. So there are some things about other games and whatnot, but not really anything about this one, other than the occasional, "Checked the website for updates."

At any rate, I did see that certain PMs had other projects that they were working on, so perhaps those are taking up time right now. It does seem a bit odd that the other mscapes never got uploaded. I mean, yes, those of us with ipaqs got the Water one, but that feels kind of like cheating. Like we don't officially have it until it's online and available for general use.

I haven't even touched the iPaq they gave me since. It kinda feels like we've been completely abandoned and forgotten about. This is not the kind of pace I expected from the MeiGeist Team, and I'm totally bored with the whole thing.

I also think the whole concept of the mScapes is a bit of a failure - the Geocaching segment works great, but the mScapes... well there's just so many reasons I can think of for why they simply wont be popular to the average gamer.

For a start, it's incredibly difficult to calibrate the damn things. They've gone overboard on the artwork, so that the practical value and visual feedback you normally get from a GPS device, is completely hidden. For example - on the tree game, it is incredibly difficult to work out where you are in relation to the 9 points on the screen. It will show you when you hit those points, but NOT where you are when you're between points. This makes mapping out a simple square shape almost impossible, since when you think you're in a corner, you may actually be right on a far edge - and the program is so intolerant of faults, that the second you step outside the playing area, the whole thing resets itself and has to be done again!

Technical and asthetic problems aside, there is also the issue of blinkering. You do not pay attention to where you are, or what you are doing - you're staring at a screen, with headphones in your ears, and so the likelihood of some little oik wandering under a truck is extremely high, should these things ever make it to market. It also completely nullifies the benefit of being in the fresh air and great outdoors, since you completely forget where you are. There's also the fact that you can't play them unless the weather is good.

Finally, and perhaps most importantly - you are wandering around, holding a very expensive bit of kit, in full view, and clearly not paying attention to your surroundings. If anything is more likely to get you mugged, then I would say mScapes are it. If its not a good mugging, then someone is bound to at the very least call the cops on you and arrest you on suspicion of terrorist activities. It's a flawed concept, I tell ya!

Okay, so now I'm wondering--would any of you who have the iPaqs be willing to check out another game from the mscape web site to see if the problems are just with these particular mscapes? It seems like if all of the other mscapes have these same problems, then it wouldn't be very popular with anybody. Because I think it might be useful for the PMs to know so that when they come up with mscape number three, they could fix some of the problems.

I feel kind of abandoned, too. I keep wondering if we actually have enough information to figure out SOMETHING, and we just haven't found it yet, but it's kind of difficult to know if that's true because we haven't really gotten any feedback yet. I'd particularly like to be provided the missing letters from the geocache that got partially dismantled (in letterboxing, we would say the box had been "muggled"). That at least would be a little more to work with.

Has anyone taken a look at the dreamcatcher document I loaded in that spec thread? I'm wondering if that might spark some thinking to help us figure out how this whole thing links together.

If we really have to find ALL of the geocaches for us to solve this game, I think that is a major fault in it. Finding the caches is a fun thing, but being able to rely on finding all of them makes for a very precarious game solve.

I had a document, actually, in which I listed all of the information about each shard in terms of the symbolism, and then a power failure trashed the drive I had the data on. I'm going to be sending that drive in this week to retrieve the data, but I don't know how long it is going to take them to get it, or if they can get everything. I don't know if that is even going to help, but at least it felt like something I could do.

They're supposed to be conducting an interview with all of us when the time is up, so I will definitely be feeding back my (dissapointingly negative) assessent.

In MeiGeist we had personal one-on-one contact with the characters, regular and speedy progress, and some very good progress-related feedback. Here we've got none of that, and it ruins the experience for me. There is no real sense of immersion - the lines between "game" and "reality" are far too clear, and there is no player-to-character interaction to speak of. It's worse than one of those CD-ROM "Interactive Movies".

it's ashame

I really hate to see this happening to this game. It's got none of the elements that make an ARG but I sort of got that impression when I read that people would be able to replay it. Like I said about 4 pages back, measures should have been taken to allow the solving of the puzzle without having to rely on the geocaches.

Wait, so your sayin we cant complete this arg if we cant get this geochache and mscape crap working?! That will be very disapointing, after all the work we did for poor wendy!

Sorry, guys, I haven't really tried to do any work on this since I got back home. I'll try to take a look at what we have so far and see if I can't piece anything together. FCR is at a standstill also. Gah.

Here's a hearty echoing of sentiments from me as well..

I've tried really hard with the mscapes & just can't seem to get on with them. I even tried using a statue with bollards round it as markers & the stupid thing still had me walking to the 'wrong' places even though I was using the markers!

anyway, I still think that the clues sound like cryptic crossword clues for example 'regina most low' could be Queen Titiania or something - regina = queen & most low = bottom from midsummer's night dream

I don't know, I'm racking my brain over it though

and I think I'm giving back my ipaq today as I'm meeting Jo & Vanessa to do some filming for TSR. I'll see if I can get any hints & update later

Either we're missing something blatantly obvious or this is somewhat awkward design.

The way I see it, this game is at a standstill because we have gotten barely any geocaches. Considering the amount of caches that they are, compared to the amount of people playing and their physical locations, it feels strange that this is a required step and that NOTHING has happened in almost two months.

Also, based on the clues we have so far, it seems like we need ALL of the geocaches in order to proceed, which is borderline impossible within a reasonable time frame especially considering there are some in places where we have no presence.

If the PMs see that this approach isn't working, they should at least try to do something different.

BTW: the TSR site comes up blank for me.

Working for me. Hmm? Anyways I couldn't figure out anything after looking over what we have so far. I'm still trying though.

It's been blank for weeks now for me, and I've tried multiple browsers and multiple machines.

I wish I had some sage technical advice to throw your way, Night, but alas, I don't have the elite skills as a lot of others on unfiction do. All I can say is that it still works for me. Hate to be repetitive, but at least you know it IS there and running properly.
