I think they've been around longer. Chapter 4 mentions that the 6 had to hide their efforts in plain sight- they're hiding from The Opposition, which was even then well organized enough to interfere.

While it's possible that that is the intent, there is reference here and there in the Codex to possible danger arising out of anyone other than the six (or those helping them) finding the pages and attempting to do what they said. For example, page 2 of chapter 2 says,

Quote:
We are making seven copies of this text and intend to come home with one text each, leaving one behind here, spread out across the globe to ensure that it will be found and understood only by travelers of the same type. Accidental initiation and activation could be extremely dangerous for your world, and therefore we have tried to make it almost completely impossible for someone to have the knowledge herein unless they were sent on a mission to get it back.

Note the reference is not to the uninitiated (that is, TheO) finding the pages, but to, well, the ignorant, I guess. Why could it be dangerous if someone tried to follow the Codex who wasn't part of the six? Well, for one thing, the timing could be off...the person could try to follow the instructions at a time when other worlds weren't doing a Multiverse Olympiad. I dunno...and I don't think the "why" much matters at this point.

James has just joined Facebook.com (2 hours ago, as "James Mutters"). Let's see what he intends to do with this ...

New mail from James

New mail from James, new task:

Quote:
Welcome, New Uninitiates.

We now have 10 confirmed initiates. There are 18 who have said that they would join our ranks, but most have fallen by the way side. You are the ones who have shown your colors, now you must find the leadership in you to convince and coerce those lagging behind to step up and show their strength. We are within reach, but we must complete this mission.

More people are also welcomed to find partners and join up.

-------------------------------------------------

You are the curious. You want to know. However most are not ready for the truth. Ariadne thought she was. It nearly drove her to madness. We must encourage others to Stay Blind, just as we encouraged The Six this Spring.

Your Mission:

Encourage others to Stay Blind
Get a piece of cloth, write on it the message 'Stay Blind'.
Spread the message by 'Blindfolding' Public Statues.
Don't get caught.

Post pictures to flickr with the tags: Lostring and StayBlind

See an example of one of our members spreading the message at the New York City Labyrinth training event June 11th.

I like this! Really! I just don't know any statues near my place. Need to check. Do you think that it must be statues of human beings? Or will animals be good as well?

I say nicely done New Yorkers! I can't wait to receive this mission myself. SF is crawling with statues that are constantly being used for protest purposes.

I've uploaded today's blindfold pictures on Flickr now (search for tags "lostring" and "stayblind"). My way of cheating: I scribbled "Open your eyes!" on the other side of the blindfold ...

Here is one I took today: http://flickr.com/photos/mauroking/2591733772/in/set-72157604984673552/

I think that I will blindfold more statues tomorrow.

Now I understand why so many statues are placed on pedestals so high that they are definitely out of reach, unless you bring a ladder or are an awfully skilled freeclimber. So kudos for Soda and her team for blindfolding that horseman!
I really had to be careful, because many people in Munich tend to get rather nasty when they catch you "spoiling" public places.
