Are Roo G'ready?
murder mystery

Figured someone should start a thread, since several have gotten it (according to the spam thread).

This afternoon I received this email:

Well...are roo?

Heh.
Run rabbit!

The file below was also attached. I email'd dirk, and have yet to get a response.

So far I've communicated back and forth with "dirk" a few times. Awaiting another response from him now. He insists he knows nothing and is questioning who I am and if I sent him "the letter". Trying to get more info out of him, will update when it comes.

So I take it, someone is trying to tell us that he's a murderer (murder+er)?

Well the subject of the first mail I sent him was "Murderer" since I thought it might have been a codeword or something. I've had a few back and forths with him but he's claiming ignorance so far. I'm just curious as to if this letter he mentions is an actual letter or just the email we've all gotten.

To recap my discussions with Dirk. Initial email to him:

Quote:
Subject: You OK?

Hey there. Just received a rather disturbing news clipping.
Anything going on in your life I should know about?

His response:

Quote:
Hello, a few people have contacted me being very rude, calling me a murderer...I have no idea what is happening. Are you in on it? What is this news clipping? Was it you who sent me the letter?

My response:

Quote:
I've attached the news clipping. Honestly, I don't know who sent it to me - not someone I've ever talked to. Any idea why your email address would be scrawled on it? Did you know the murdered folks that the clipping talks about? Incidentally, what letter are you talking about? May I see it?

And his response, which is our first puzzle:

Quote:
This is extremely disturbing, I read about the murder in the paper the other day but that is all I know of it. Someone is trying to scare me.
I got the letter this morning and I don't have a scanner so I will type it out for you:

"Starting between the hills look for the fun and games of Etruscan monarchs and seek Egidio.
From his cave of a different empire, you may travel.

To find the first:
1N and 2S.

Secondly:
4S and 6E.

Finally:
2E and 6E.

Uxbridge = 20
Chenies = 4
Brooke = 28
Craven = 26
Mepham = 18
Pentham = 3
Maxley =13
Godstall = 23

Look in the Lord's (and Elliot's) cat who said the second statement in his testimony.

Run rabbit!"

They are doing their best to scare me, and it is working. I have tried to make sense of it, but to no avail.
Dirk Folds.

And, my response:

Quote:
Wow, bizarre. Me and a few friends all seem to have received the same newspaper clipping, so we're all quite interested in determining what's going on too - I'll tell ya what. Give us some time to check over this odd little letter of yours, and we'll e-mail ya if we get some ideas.

I haven't had a chance to really look at the puzzle yet. With the trailing "Run rabbit!", it definitely seems to have been sent by the same Run rabbit that started this head.

Seems to me he is being threatened. Perhaps hunted? Hence the 'hunter' telling his rabbit to run...

Maybe if we solve the puzzle we help him run?

For what it's worth, there's a couple of spelling mistakes in the 'clipping' such as knive and freash also "it's" should be "its". Never know when it could hold more meaning than simple typos so thought I'd throw it out there.

The Circus Maximus? It was commisioned by the Etruscan kings of Rome. And there's a San Egidio mission across the river from it...Sort of northeast...

Edit: So, I sort of crudely went in that direction on Google maps until I ran into Gorgona Island. Might be significant, might not be.

Edit 2: Well, eventually you get to England. Which makes more sense, being a different Empire and all.

Edit 3: Well, no, it doesn't. St Egidio = St Giles, who was Greek but moved to France to live in a cave. As a matter of fact, our attention is probably meant to be drawn to Saint-Gilles-du-Gard, which, according to legend, was built around an abbey built by some king who ran into the guy.

There's a Lord's cat by the name of Peter. Here's his obituary.

And Elliot might refer to T. S. Elliot.

Edit: From "The Naming of Cats":

Quote:

First of all, there's the name that the family use daily,
Such as Peter, Augustus, Alonzo or James,
Such as Victor or Jonathan, or George or Bill Bailey -
All of them sensible everyday names.
There are fancier names if you think they sound sweeter,
Some for the gentlemen, some for the dames:
Such as Plato, Admetus, Electra, Demeter -
But all of them sensible everyday names.

Significant? I have no idea.

I was thinking dirk is the victim here.... like, the email is the "name" and the murder+er is what this runrabbit character is calling him...
Maybe i'll be trouted, i dunno. I'll ask him about the clipping...
EDIT: sorry, but i do wanna be helpful. I got duty tomorrow, so maybe or maybe not i'll get on. Just tell me if we make a breakthrough, and I shall do the same if I get anywhere.
Also i'll try to think of a few possibilities for that letter, though I'm not so sure about some of the things mentioned. I'll just read it over and over I suppose, along with googling things...

Maybe some one should ask "dirk" about his background (family and his believes). Try to figure out why someone is after him.
