What about non-english ARGs?

"Find the Lost Ring", as far as I know, is in SEVERAL languages, including some old ones like Esperanto.

There was also that one project which I believe was from Microsoft Europe - the ARG with the punch cards - that was mostly in German I think. That had a pretty good following on forums other than this one. Along that same note, I believe there currently is another game that's mostly German: the one where they mailed out a ton of cellphones.

And there's "The Rivard Project", which has come and gone already. The game tried to have French and English in parallel, but the French players quickly overwhelmed the system and made it very difficult for the English speakers to know what was going on. Although the PMs did translate everything, the communal forums were mostly French.

Foreign ARGs are fairly common -- "Searching for Miguel" ran in Portugal, Panama had "MATADOR", and Germany has a few games that have run in the past (patmo.de is the German news resource for ARGs). I feel like there was an ARG in Argentina, but I can't remember what it was called. And that's just the tip of the iceberg (I think I heard about some of those because of the awards they won)

As Jane McGonigal noted in a recent post, different communities react to ARGs in different ways -- that's true whether you're dealing with UF versus SA, Court TV, or SuperHeroHype as well as regionally.

Hi there!

In Brazil there have been quite a few ARGs already, including some pretty large ones. Two were created by MTV Brazil, and included ads, mentions and mysterious interferences during the network's programming, and even a TV miniseries that started the second game. The first one caught most people by surprise, as very few people knew about ARGs at the time, and managed to get quite a large player base (the main player group had around a thousand members); however, the second had less advertising and attracted fewer people, and the network doesn't seem too interested in creating new games any more.

The other larger one was produced by one of the best-selling magazines and the most popular guarana soft drink in Brazil, and the story even made it to the Senate (funny details here).

A few people have even tried creating grassroots ARGs, but as far as I know none has managed to reach a successful ending so far...
