Ok, I took the string of green numbers and transposed them all to letters. I then used rot 1 - rot 25 on it. There is the word HINT in every even-numbered ROT except ROT 16. Why is this. or am I doing something goofy?

FWIW, the background is from the manga "Death Note," and is from a scene where Misa, aka 2nd Kira, is trying to communicate with Kira through videotapes and Kira (aka Light) is attempting to dissect the information while pretending to work with L, the detective trying to catch Kira.

I would guess ROT-16 or even numbers to be our big hint.

Also, note the request (apparently by ssc) for encrypted communication. Whenever or however you contact them should involve a puzzle. (Just don't get the other NPC's nervous.)

[UPDATE] Blog - June 18

A new blog post by a new character; Samavah Tehryuin.
Quote:
Exiles at Large - Visions

I have heard stories of other races who come upon dreams as they sleep. Some consider them visions of great portent, some consider them the restless stirrings of the mind at rest. Those of our race, of course, tend toward the former explanation. After all, Zetria Atrian herself was said to have gained knowledge from the very rocks beneath her feet. I believe that true visions, true expressions of our latent heritage are few and far between...this puts me as, well, someone at odds with many of my colleagues. Nevertheless, if someone comes to me with a dream, a thought that they never believed their own mind could think...It is my job to assist them in understanding it and dealing with it. I almost find it more interesting when the dream is not really a vision, because then it says more about the person who saw it, instead of something outside them...

A thought about the hint...

It's interesting that the hint uses numbers for a Lo Shu square (it's sum of the numbers in each row, column and diagonal = 15).
Code:
n - 6 l - 7 t - 2
f - 1 x - 5 j - 9
p - 8 l - 3 r - 4

drizjr, I <3 you so much.

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
Those numbers (possibly combined with some meta information - I can't help it if I've dealt with the PM before) divide into sets of three, which means ASCII table time - which gives us "dotmid". And, lo, putting a dot between bach and fugue seems to load a page as well. (No idea if it changes anything, as I'm on the Wii, which does not do the source code thing.)

Brillant, vidstudent! Funny, I was reading your posts on the blog and thinking, "I <3 that vidstudent." Smile

It may be Morse code at the end of that midi. Transcribing it isn't making much sense to me, but it sounds like either...

Spoiler (Rollover to View):
-.. .. .-. ... - .- ... -.- - DIRSTASKT
or
-.. .. .-. ... - .- ... -.-- DIRSTASY

Do either of those mean anything?

eta: Just for info... The Bach piece is Toccata and Fugue in D minor.
When jedittor dropped the T from your name, "vidsudent! good to hear from you...uh...is it vidstudent? crap, we might have been saying it wrong all this time...<snip>", it had me wondering if a letter needed to be omitted somewhere. It's interesting, to me, how close toccata is to staccato. hmmm
P.S. I also think it's great that the Exiles named their vidtraps after you, vidstudent. Smile

The only letter in staccato and not in toccata is s.

As for the vidtraps, it impressed me, too. I like to think that the Marine Corps taught me *something*. Wink

Now, as for the Morse code:
Spoiler (Rollover to View):
It's the latter. Let me add a space and see if it helps: DIR STASY

Okay, okay, here we go:

Today's word is apostasy.

We have some focus on Book 2, a few lines involving trust and aims, a line of text to decode, and a secret little input box. Have fun!

I had to look that one up.
Quote:
apostasy = Abandonment of one's religious faith, a political party, one's principles, or a cause.

From wiki
Quote:
Apostasy <snip> is the formal abandonment or renunciation of one's religion, especially if the motive is deemed unworthy. In a technical sense, as used sometimes by sociologists without the pejorative connotations of the word, the term refers to renunciation and criticism of, or opposition to one's former religion. One who commits apostasy is an apostate, or one who apostatises.

I'm uncertain which text field is for a password. I'm guessing it's the bottom one. So far lionsmouth, isostasy and apostasy don't work as passwords.

OK... so, now I'm thinkin' that the password will be a number. After all, haven't we been imputing a seven digit, anti-spam number for each post up to now?
I think the solution is somewhere in...
Quote:
if you want to contribute take the (time) (machine) back to the (year snow changed the bulletin board system % 100)
Perhaps the first four digits are a year of some bad snow storm, and the last three digits are 100?

Onto another matter. I've never been very good at "story so far" posts. I tend to get overwhelmed by detail. But, since there have been a couple of end games recently, and maybe a few players looking for something new, here's my feeble attempt.

Story So Far
Many players received parts of a very elaborate rabbit hole of multiple emails and postcards. When compiled and decoded, they lead us to exilearchive.com.
There we found a community of exiles struggling to survive in a desolate desert world environment. Using what they call the [[System]], they begin communication with us ; dubbed the idea-web people, via the blog feature.
The [System] also has a query page, which holds "The Books of Minimer Randibone"; the exiles' philosophical guide, some insights into their world, and a number of puzzles.

Strange coded messages interrupt the emails sent by the [System]. Pranks, spam on the blog system, and setbacks such as the lockstone, appear to be the work of a hidden faction of the Exiles' society calling themselves the ssc (staccato setback cabal). These methods are their way of protesting the core values of the society, as they believe that the original version of "The Book of Minimer Randibone" has been altered to what it is today. They want our help.

We are now on the verge of being able to contact the ssc directly through http://www.exilearchive.com/stasy/stasy.php (if we can figure out the password.)

How do the philosophies differ?
Can we be ambassadors between these two factions to better their world?

I think that this may be referring to this. I've tried combinations of the date and names. Nothing has worked yet. Hope this helps us out.

Just popping my head in here. The % says MOD (modulo) to me. So, if it was say 1978, 1978 % 100 = 78.

% function

I can't get 78 through the password, whether it be numbers or letters (with or without hyphen). That said, you have to be on the right track, Mr. Toasty - could you explain this modulo function whilst I look up PHP online and see what it considers the % sign to be? (Seeing as, well, the entry boxes are all PHP pages, it's likely a PHP function we're working with.)

Great contributions, ilikepucks and MrToasty. Thanks!

so...hmmm. If (year snow changed the bulletin board system % 100) =78, what about (time) and (machine)? Perhaps they, too, represent numbers.
Is it possible to code a password to use the current time? That would give us four more digits. Then we'd only need one to represent (machine); that is, if this password is a seven digit number.
*chin rub*

eta: At "View page info" forms tab, the password's "current value" is eight asterisks. Is that significant? (Can you tell that I know very little about such things? Confused )

The modulus function merely gives you the remainder of a quotient. In the 1978 example, 1978/100=19 in integer math, and 1978%100=78, the remainder.

I was wondering if could be related to a Unix timestamp. For example, Feb 16, 1978, the official CBBS date, has a Unix time of 256435200 for 12am. If the operator was / instead of %, that alone would give you 2564352. Dunno
