The TheO Voicemail Message Mission

James Mutters wrote:
Hi Everyone.

Today I got the access code to the Theo Voicemail. There is a TON of activity. Going through the messages, I'd say there's probably 20 a week!

Anyways, I was just flipping through the messages trying to figure out what any of them said (they're all in different languages so it's hard for me to understand (I was a CS major! If the message had been: System.out.println("hello theo"); I'd totally have understood. But one message caught my attention. Someone said La Sesa Ringo! I got super excited, that's the title of the last chapter of the codex, right?!?

Anyways, I might have gotten a bit too excited... I deleted the message from the machine by ACCIDENT! I was thinking about playing the message back into the machine, but what if there's somethign in here we need... and we don't want other people to have, right?

So here's what we need to do:

1 - figure out what language this message was recorded in
2 - translate it and figure out what it says
3 - come up with a decoy message
4 - leave the decoy message on the machine

I figure we probably have 1, maybe 2 days before they notice it's missing... HELP!!!

I know you all are a lot smarter than me at a lot of this stuff, let me know as soon as you've figured anything out!

The end bit is in English, thankfully for me Smile. I think mythology could give us some clues.

English bit:
Quote:
Tell the Ringkeeper the name, according to Hesiod of the first monster born from the two-headed dog and his sister, who were both born to the mate of the last-born son of our present and cosmological state.

In the non-English bit, I hear "frau" a lot...so is it German? MauroKing also mentioned (in an MSN chat I'm having with him) hearing "stadias".

(Edited above to replace "Hezziod" with Hesiod, since that makes sense given our research so far.)

English Section

Tell the ring keeper to name according to Hesiod(?) of the first monster born from the two headed dog and his sister who were both born to the mate of the last born son of our present pan-cosmological state(?).

Two headed dog is Orthrus
Sister is Drakon Chimaera
Father of both is Typhon

Potential children of Orthrus include the Nemean Lion, Chimera, Sphinx, and Lernaean Hydra.

just found this:
Hesiod, Theogony 326 ff (trans. Evelyn-White) (Greek epic C8th or C7th B.C.) :
"But she [the Khimaira or perhaps Ekhidna] in love with Orthos, mothered the deadly Sphinx . . . and the Nemeian lion."

Been chatting with James on Facebook. I mentioned to him that MauroKing heard "stadia" in there. Discussion from there:

Quote:

Joy:
Ok, one person has heard mention of "stadia". This is very preliminary, but perhaps it is directions for how the next person to receive the ring will get it. Perhaps we could misdirect the intended recipient with some bad coordinates...and send one of our own people to the real coordinates.

James:
ooh, I like it!

Joy:
We'll have to make sure our agent has the correct codeword, too.

James:
is that what the mythology part is?

[here James changed his status to "maybe I didn't mess up too badly." Smile]

Joy
I think so. It starts off, "Tell the Ringkeeper the name of so-and-so..." so we have to figure out who so-and-so is.

Oh, I so envy the person that gets to do that deaddrop! Might be kinda scary though Shocked .

Ok, the "according to" bit is "according to Hesiod." Wikipedia article on Hesiod: click this text. So where various versions of the mythology exist, go with Hesiod's version. In particular, he put together the Theogony..."a poem by Hesiod describing the origins and genealogies of the gods of the ancient Greeks, composed circa 700 BC" (source: Wikipedia...click this text for link.)

Ok, I'm looking at the Wikipedia article on Theogony, and Gaia is mentioned lots, and I think she's who is referred to by the quote above...she does seem to be involved in the appropriate lineages, but I'm so excited that I'm having trouble making good sense of it, lol...I'll keep looking into this.

Here is more of my conversation with James:

Quote:
James:
alright, I have to go

Joy:
Ok, we'll keep working on this!
Good luck! Stay safe!

James:
email me when you all have figured things out
thanks
I'm actually traveling tommorrow, so I may not be around all day

Joy:
Ok, we'll send you an e-mail for sure.

James
shoot... I just realized i"m not going to be back at my computer until like saturday afternoon

Joy:
hmm

James:
I'll check in the morning before I leave
I trust you all
you'll be able to figure it out!

Joy:
should one of us actually record the message?
you should probably give it a look-see first, but if you won't be around...

James:
oh, I know! I'll email Eli... this is important enough that he needs to know about it

Joy:
excellent idea

James:
alright, tell everyone to email Eli with any thoughts
I'll email him a copy of the message and let him know what's up

Joy:
ok. have a good trip!

James:
thanks!

Joy:
business or pleasure?

James:
pleasure
thank goodness!

Joy:
good stuff Smile
bye for now.

FYI - here is my FB chat with James prior to him sending out the email, to add to the mix. It's rather long, so I've tried to condense it and format it in a readable manner...

James & mr.judkins wrote:
James: hey [mr.judkins], you around?

mr.judkins: Yes James! How can I help?

James: Hi! So I'm a little jumpy right now, but I might have really messed something up. I'm going to need help

mr.judkins: I'm happy to do so! What's happened?

James: I need people who speak other languages... hell I don't even know which language I need yet

mr.judkins: Ok...

James: sorry, I should backtrack. I got access to the Theo Voicemail. I heard a message which might be pertinent to what we're working on

mr.judkins: Oh really? Are they on to us?

James: I don't think so. hang on, I transfered it onto my computer, I'm in the process of trying to get it into a file I can send you

mr.judkins: Sure...

James: the thing that caught my attention was that the guy said La Seso Ringo or something like that. Isn't that the name of the last chapter of the codex?

mr.judkins: Yeah - La Sesa Ringo, "The Sixth Ring", The Lost Ring.

James: RIGHT! The sixth ring... I've heard about this from other theo people

mr.judkins: Wow...

James: ok, I have it as an mp3

mr.judkins: Great! Do you want to email it through to me, and I can get our team onto it right away...

James: yeah. ok here's the problem, i'm kind of panicking. i deleted it BY ACCIDENT. i mean, I have the file, but I deleted it from the answering machine

mr.judkins: gotcha.

James: this thing is super cryptic. i KNOW it's important, but I'm worried that they're going to notice that it's not there

mr.judkins: Are we able to LEAVE messages as well?

James: yes! we've got the number

mr.judkins: We could play back your recording then - into the phone, and the message is back.

James: but what if this is something we don't want them to have? we need a replacement message

mr.judkins: Gotcha.

James: ok, I'm about to send this out to my theo people, hopefully we can get everyone working on it together

mr.judkins: Great! Between your TheO team and the other Agonothetai we can come up with something, I'm sure. Do you have any idea how much time we've got to get a new message up there?

James: I'd guess 1, maybe 2 days

mr.judkins: That's cool - better than 1 maybe 2 hours!

James: ok, sending now

mr.judkins: Got it! So do you think we'll need to leave the replacement message in the same language as well?

James: I think so, they'll be expecting it from a particular person, right?

mr.judkins: Absolutely. So we'll need to get someone to do the best impersonation we can, in the same language.

James: my guess is that getting the language right will be the toughest... lets start there. If we can get someone to impersonate, that would be icing on the cake

mr.judkins: We've got a team who speak a variety of languages - I'll keep you updated on our progress.

James: alright, thanks!

mr.judkins: Uploaded to our private community - I'll be back soon!

James: cool, thanks!

James Status: maybe I didn't mess up too badly.

mr.judkins: The team has leapt onto it already. multiple languages, it seems.

James: multiple? wow, this is going to be hard. what languages are there?

mr.judkins: It's tough, because the Europeans are fast asleep at this point.

James: grrr - well someone wake em up! lol

Yeah, shortly after I started chatting with James I noticed you were online as well...I wish there was a way for multiple FB users to be in 1 chat. Oh well.

I think all we need to know now to figure out the English bit (which I think will be the codeword our agent doing the 6th ring pickup will give, but I guess that's still spec) is whether the Sphinx was born before the Nemean Lion or after. That will be "the first monster born from the two-headed dog [Orthos] and his sister [Chimera], who were both born to the mate [Echidna] of the last-born son [Typhoeus] of our present and cosmological state [Gaia]." (Ariock figured out most of this above, not me Smile...I'm just summarizing for myself.)

HEROIC BATTLES OF GREEK MYTHOLOGY - CHIMAERA THE DRAKON

(from the ABC set THE ANCIENT WORLD AND BEYOND)

There was a dreadful union
Between the giant immortal Typhon
And the black fearful eyed Echidne,
Half serpent, half woman
The terrifying result of this
Unnatural union was the Chimaera
A great beast strong and swift footed
Who snorted raging fire
The creature's front
Was that of a lion with tooth claw and nail
The hindquarters and middle
Of a goat and a serpent for a tail
Her heads numbered three,
One of a lion, a goat and a snake
A fire breathing powerful drakon
She left death in her wake
The Drakon Chimaera was in love
With Orthrus her own brother
And spawned the deadly Sphinx
And the Nemean Lion together

She ravaged the herds
And despoiled the Lycian countryside
The bones of her victims
Lay strewn across the mountainside
The creature allegedly reared
By Ambassados plagued Lycia
And many an heroic figure
Tried to rid that land of Chimaera
Then King Iobates sent
The gallant Corinthian hero Bellerophon
Mounted upon winged Pegasus
To do battle with the Drakon
He rained arrows down
With the help of the goddess Athena
And with his lead tipped lance
Bellerophon killed Chimera

Well, my vote is for the Sphinx, then, based on Ariock's quote above and what Pita just posted.

If we do decide to send one of our own agents to do a deaddrop related to this, perhaps they should also be familiar with the Riddle of the Sphinx, heh Smile.

I listened to the message again and MauroKing is definitely right about the stadia bit. I think I hear 333 stadia from omphalos acht (German for eight). I don't know what the direction is, though. Omphalos 8 is the one in Vietnam according to the wiki (click this text for link).

It's looking more and more like the Sphinx to me too

The following is an excerpt from The Theogony of Hesiod

"Men say that Typhaon the terrible, outrageous and lawless, was joined in love to her, the maid with glancing eyes. So she conceived and brought forth fierce offspring; first she bare Orthus the hound of Geryones, and then again she bare a second, a monster not to be overcome and that may not be described, Cerberus who eats raw flesh, the brazen-voiced hound of Hades, fifty-headed, relentless and strong. And again she bore a third, the evil-minded Hydra of Lerna, whom the goddess, white-armed Hera nourished, being angry beyond measure with the mighty Heracles. And her Heracles, the son of Zeus, of the house of Amphitryon, together with warlike Iolaus, destroyed with the unpitying sword through the plans of Athene the spoil-driver. She was the mother of Chimaera who breathed raging fire, a creature fearful, great, swift-footed and strong, who had three heads, one of a grim-eyed lion; in her hinderpart, a dragon; and in her middle, a goat, breathing forth a fearful blast of blazing fire. Her did Pegasus and noble Bellerophon slay; but Echidna was subject in love to Orthus and brought forth the deadly Sphinx which destroyed the Cadmeans, and the Nemean lion, which Hera, the good wife of Zeus, brought up and made to haunt the hills of Nemea, a plague to men. There he preyed upon the tribes of her own people and had power over Tretus of Nemea and Apesas: yet the strength of stout Heracles overcame him."

So, according to Hesiod, the Sphinx seems to be the first born, assuming that the first mentioned is the first born, that is.

I have questions about the section in English. I ain't not no Sofia, after all.

English part of message.mp3 wrote:

Who is the ring keeper?

Why should we tell the ring keeper this? Suppose it is the Sphinx. Then, as dreamerblue pointed out, will the Riddle of the Sphinx be important?

Or, perhaps, 4-2-3 is a KODE or a KLOO. Wink

OH, why do the great news on this always appear when it's late at night and I'm sleeping??? The beginning sounds definitely Dutch - I'll try and transcribe it.

(WHY does it have to be Dutch? Why not German or Swedish? Amsterdam, Amsterdam, I know - but my oral comprehension skills in Dutch are rotten ...)
