Regarding the "G" in ARG?
What do I get for winning?

Do ARGs usually award prizes? A pot of gold or something for the winner(s)?

Edit: Context.

From my experience, there's usually a prize, but not really in terms of material objects. It's more like the prize you get from, say, beating a video game: An entertaining conclusion to the story (or a cliffhanger :/), and the credits reel XD

Then again, I generally tend to stray more towards grassroots games than company-funded ARGs, so don't quote me on that

Exactly. It's like when you finish reading a book; your "reward" is the adventure and the experience. Usually only the professionally developed ARGs provide any sort of monetary compensation. Perplex City, for example, offered £100,000 to whoever found the Receda Cube. Currently, the ongoing Dorito-sponsored Triangle Mystery puzzle quest is giving up $100,000 to the eventual winner. Little late to join in on that one, though.

Additional Context: ARGs aren't quite "games" -- or at least not necessarily.

Excellent article, thanks!

And there's at least two actively running ARG that does have one or more prizes for the winner(s).

(No, mine's not one of them...)

Thanks for the article. Cloverfield was my first ARG. I recall a poster dropping in the Cloverfield forum warning us to prepare to be disappointed (with JJ Abrams). I sorta knew what he was getting at. He'd invested himself in The Lost Experience(*), (I'm guessing), gotten in so deep he'd felt he owned/earned a piece of the game (played a not insignificant role?), only for the game to end with a defining silence. That is, nothing, not even recognition.

So that's the caution I'd attach to a Bad Robot ARG, "puppet masters ... giving feedback and showcasing excellent play/work," not included.

Also, thanks for the updated vocab. I've never liked "viral."

(*)I can't actually speak for The Lost Experience since I wasn't there and I'm too lazy to read up on it.
