[SPEC] Mellisa / McKaskill dialouge

from the new email from Mel, keep the spec to only this dialogue, not the SP's email, that's a seperate issue, thanks:

Quote:

McKaskill, I said. Got a moment?

Sure, Operator!

They call me the Operator because, you know, I work the system to take care of my crew.

McKaskill was a nice kid, family from Durban, on the outer colony world of Biko, which had been glassed years ago. But he'd grown up in refugee apartments in the inner colonies and he had the look of someone who spent his childhood in concrete places under artificial lights.

Weedy.

He was doing a check in the tool crib now. The go-to kid for tools and parts. The stacks of shelves were his little kingdom, probably more his own than anything he'd had growing up. I liked him a lot.

McKaskill, I said, I was checking the slipstream packets. I do that before I send them out. You knew that, right?

His eyes went to the grating at his feet and he got all casual inner city don't screw with me, because he knew I was onto him.

Somebody has been talking to you, I said. And now you're sending him a message back.

So?

I sighed. McKaskill, bad people are putting bad thoughts in your head.

He tried to get righteous. Op, that thing…whatever it is, in the hold. They're keeping big-time wraps on it. You know that. I heard the Captain. The way she's talking, they're not gonna let people look at, it's goin' to a basement in ONI. A sub sub sub basement. They can't just take something that big and…shove it away somewhere.

McKaskill, I said, sending messages off to people without clearance, you know, that could be construed as treason.

Op! Melissa! I didn't mean—

And we're at war, crewman. Which makes treason a capital offense.

His eyes got wide. But-but-but you got it, he said, it didn't go nowhere.

You're my crew, and no one is going to touch my crew without going through me. I've got your back, McKaskill. But you're going to have to tell me about this contact.

Some old guy. You know, bad taste in clothes. But he was cleared to come aboard, so he has to be Intel.

You know his name?

Probably not his real one.

hmmmmmmmm, so that's how the Castaway came on board... he was contacted by this kid AFTER they got the artifact

.........deeper

fire away

Don't have any real speculation, I'm just in awe of the wonderful writing. If the PM's really are reading this forum, I gotta give them props, this dialogue is amazing. Especially the very end.

I just think Weedy is a description, not a new character. I think she's saying that Mckaskill looked weedy.

Weeds grow through the cracks, and in spite of good growing conditions. They take root in nearly every environment, and survive, even though they might not be as robust (or as healthy-looking) as other plants in better situations.

He may appear weak or malnourished, but he's an urban survivor.

Don't go outside or do any exercise. Eat as little as possible. Stare at a computer a lot.

Maybe you guys need to use a dictionary a bit more.

Weedy, adj:
3 : noticeably lean and scrawny : LANKY

Who is the Castaway? Well, he
Quote:
was cleared to come aboard, so he has to be Intel.

So he's an ONI officer. That doesn't really tell us much, because we already knew that
Quote:
The Castaway had some connection there: sending out signals to confuse the enemy.

Best guess right now is that he's just some random ONI officer unmentioned before the ARG.

yeah, i'm not saying "omg teh castaway is mas7er chef!!!1", but you don't just have "random ONI officers", those guys are pretty important, pretty specialized, and pretty secretive.... he was cleared to come aboard, but he only came AFTER McKaskill told him "hey old man, we have some wierd gray cylinder thingy, come on over and take a gander"
perhaps the whole "distract the enemy" thing is a front, he was actually looking for that object out there for ONI

Well, and my question to follow up the thoughts of Jedi, are this:

How does a ratty, weedy-type person, who essentially is a "repair man/mechanic/parts supervisor" have contacts in ONI Intel? I mean, secret contacts even... I have no idea what conclusion that the answer could create, but still, it seems a little strange that Mckaskill would have someone like that to send a secret transmission to anyway, right?

Seems like we're getting closer and closer to the meaning of the cylinder.

Right now that's the most mysterious thing in the story - my personal spec is that it will turn out to be a deus ex machina to join the Halo universe with ours (e.g. a time travel thingamajibba). Or the Princess. Or both. Smile

If you read the text carefully, the Operator says that
Quote:
Somebody has been talking to you, I said. And now you're sending him a message back.

So it's more the other way round - ONI talking to McKaskill, not vice versa.

I would suspect that ONI has contacts in the crews of all UNSC ships, who have instructions to report anything unusual that they've come across (mysterious artefacts, derelict ships, strange rouins, activity on dead planets . . . ).

Mr. Weedy McCaskill may be one of those ONI contacts, who's in touch with an ONI agent.
