Research: New to ARG.
Looking for factual info on tv-related ARGs.

Hello there. I am completely new to the concept of ARGs, so I apologise that this may seem out of place as a post on these boards. I am doing some research for a new ARG proposal and am looking for information regarding past Alternate Reality Games that have been spin-offs or side projects to contemporary TV dramas. There's a wealth of information out there on the 'story' aspects to the games that are associated with Lost, or 24, or Heroes, but I was hoping to find out info on their success rates (how many people 'played' the games; how they were promoted - was it simply word-of-mouth or intuition on behalf of the television viewer/fan?) and how costly they were, etc.

Like I would say, I would be greatful for any help in adressing these questions: this site looks to be the place to come and the people to ask, but it's an extremely extensive site, and it's tough to distill the information simply by exploring the many, many pages on here.

Many thanks.

edit: moved to general meta - imbri

Welcome to UF!
You will be needing the META Forum here, I think you should be able to get what you need from there. Check out the Archive too. Good luck!

I'll reply and assume the moderators will move your thread to the General Meta section later today.

Well, yes and no. This is the place to get answers from the players' perspective, but many of the big promotional ARGs are run by media outfits who are either not socializing here or are not going to share their statistics. Data like costs and traffic numbers are proprietary, and some are hard to measure even by those "behind the curtain".

When players talk about "success", they'll mention how much they enjoyed themselves. You can ask how many participated, and you'll get three different measurements depending on if you count forum posts or email signups or lurker eyeballs.

There are other places where you might find more substantial info. I'm digging around for the IGDA ARG SIG links now, which has a wiki and a white paper and other post-game analysis write-ups.

http://igda.org/arg/publications.html

And a few noteable "puppetmasters" do frequent these forums and might even contact you via your inbox. (I'm not one of them)

You might find this page on the illustrious Christy Dena's website to be helpful.

My partner in crime Adam Brackin just finished his dissertation which includes overviews of several ARGs. You might find some of his research useful.

You can download it here (somewhat large PDF file): http://forums.unfiction.com/forums/viewtopic.php?mode=attach&id=13389
