Good Trailheads

I've been sorta fooling around with some ideas for an ARG, but I'm having a heck of a time coming up with a reasonable trailhead to get a large enough player base for the game to pick up, and yet have it still be reasonable and kinda mysterious.

I'm more of a puzzle guy myself. I have the middle and end of my ARG all worked out, but I just cannot figure out how to get people into it at the beginning.

Any thoughts on good trailheads?

To me a good trailhead is a suprise and something that hasn't been done before. if you use a trailhead that's posted here, it won't be a suprise, so to me it looses value.

maybe you could look at past ARG see how they have started and then think of something that will fit your game.

That's true, I guess my primary question is, who are the right people to get the trailhead to, so I can ensure that the game base will be large enough to be self-sustaining. I am betting if I tried a few of my ideas (which are cool, but a little off), I don't think I'd get a large enough starter base to keep the ARG going.

That's primariliy my fears.

I would think that would depend on your intended audience and the subject matter. As for leaking things to the ARG community, I know that the various ARG sites all take anonymous tips.

ARGN will likely post anon trailheads.

The contact details are on the site.

Also If you pay attention you may be able to leak it to other boards that Important people frequent.....For instance if you can find other places that VpiSteve or BrianEnigma frequent a guest post on one of those board may get some attention. Or if you REALY pay attention there is NO reason that you couldn't leak it to someone from the community IRL (meeting/package drop) if you live in the same city or are going to an ARGfest (Bit of planing but can be done).

I want to show up at someone's doorstep in a heavy black cloak and a twisted opera mask and hand someone a brown paper package, myself. Too bad I live in western Canada and don't have the money to do so to anyone important.

Heh, but those are the best types. The ones in which you don't know where reality ends and the game begins..

Now his is a bit too obvious that it's not real (a guy in a black cloak would probably either be insane or a game). But there have been other ones which fuzzed the border between reality and non-reality.

I'd also like to suggest that it be someone you are certain will open the door for you. In some areas, wearing that get up on any day other than specific holiday or for a costume party will likely cause the opposite effect. Especially with the "phantom of the opera" get up...
