[OT]Wiki slow due to Penny Arcade Blurb if anybody is wondering why they can't access the wiki, it's because penny-arcade.com , a web comic with a high readership, has a little blurb about ILB today.
Edit - More info to topic, PA url - SG

Heh, PA is down for me as well - maybe it's a reverb effect
Wonder if Tycho posts up any specs or just lurks around here...

Hmph. Wondered why the Wiki ate it when I was in the middle of an update.
*waves to Tycho*

I was in the middle of an update too... that was hours ago. since then, I've been able to see the recent updates once... someone should tell penny arcade, or set up a block or filter or something
yeah, so it's my first time posting here too... hello all I've been lurking here since I started with ILB and the wiki... so lets hope it's up again before tomorrow...

Hmm. I looked at the specs for the standard Dreamhost account and it has a monthly limit of 40Gb traffic. That's for the $7.95 account, anyway. I'm going to guess that the Wiki is probably on the cheapest account and PA may well have just blown away the bandwidth limit.

Thanks Tycho...
I mean, I really enjoy his writing and I think it's cool that he's into the ILB site, but doesn't he know that by posting the Netninja Bee Wiki on PA he has effectively signed the death warrant of that site's usefulness?
Now it's going to be drowning in a veritable sea of trout. I'll bet the admins will have to spend the vast majority of their time cleaning the site out.

I wouldnt be too worried about the troutphoon. In my experience the PA crowd arent too bad. It's the Xbox/PS2 fanboi crowd to be afraid of and they already did their worst.

yeah, the trout seems to be down a lot... there used to be a lot of repeat posting (in the TXB forums it's still crazy - people posting 'OH! NEW text!' from phase 1 text, or even original website text, just a huge listing of anything odd they find, and even after telling people to check first, it still comes argh!) but the wiki's been very impressive... there was a slight influx of trout a few days after it went live to the xbox/halo community news reports, but I think 90% of the visitors to it are total lurkers now...
now someone just has to get a hold of PA to tell them the front-page news is killing the site... it's PA's version of the slashdot effect...

I already emailed Tycho and grumbled at him.

haha I just remembered, something ridiculously ironic... the last update I managed to get in today and save was on the main page, a note asking if there's any way we could speed up the site (reducing the database, clearing out unused pages, removing duplicate info, old info, etc) because the pages are taking on avg between 20-30 seconds to load most of the time, for me at least...

Certainly seems like if the Wiki does ever recover it would be sensible to cut down the size of the front page a lot. Any other pages that get loaded a lot too (we can look at server statistics to find out which ones those are) could get a "crash diet".

One thing I was looking for when I started in the wiki was a way to find out how many 'pages' are in the database entirely, and how big the database is... there's a page that lists basically a 'top #' type listing, but none of the options give anything useful... a page could be created that isn't listed in any of those reports, and we'd never know it's there... that's one reason I created the site map, because there's so many pages it's unbelievable, so it's hard to tell which is active and not and which are unnecessary... and if the wiki is searching the database for every single page hit, .. well, someone's gotta maintain the database integrity...
can you tell I'm a datasystems developer?

Oh no... Not the Penny Arcade crowd... From what I have heard and seen, those guys are horrible. One week Frankie hosted a Bungie update there and got totally flamed by everyone of the forums and even got banned by one of their mods. Anyway, it was 20 some pages of the rudest complaining ever. Hope the wiki survives.

but then, that was because Frankie put a surprise halo weekly update in the forums, bringing on the sludge of newbies and halo fanboys, which distrupted the 'peacefulness' of their forums...
*cough* isn't it ironic, they're basically doing precisely the same thing to the wiki... hmm...?
